I managed to stagger through my 5K, and the children didn’t kill each other while I ran it (DH had to work today), thereby earning a trip to Tim Horton’s for a donut for DD and lunch later at Chic-Fi-Lay for DS. Food is a big motivator at our house.

I remembered again why I hate 5Ks – they HURT! I’d much rather run a nice HM than a 5K any day. I’m just not built for speed, and the effort it takes to maintain a modicum of it is torturous. To add insult to injury, my finishing time today was more than a full minute slower than my 5K PR 2 months ago (24:01 vs 22:59). Ouch. I can blame it on my congested sinuses, or the fact that the first half of the course was downhill and the 2nd half was uphill against a good headwind, but that wouldn’t seem to justify such a huge difference. Afterward, I had such a bad cramp in my side that I was barely able to jog out another ¾ mile CD, and my quads were surprisingly stiff and sore. All in all, what felt like a huge effort with a disappointing finish.

Still, I bettered my last year’s time at this race by 1:40, and I won 2nd in my AG. The prizes were twisted wire tree sculptures on chunks of rock (quartz I think), with gold wire for 1st, silver wire for 2nd, and bronze wire for 3rd.

Of course, the kids broke it in the car on the way home. But, with the help of a hot glue gun, the little tree once again sprouts from its rock, perched high out of reach.

I also came away with a nice metal coffee mug, a pad of paper shaped like a foot, a pen shaped like a bone, and won a door prize of a wide-mouthed yellow-plastic water bottle. Since I was just yesterday reading Spareribs’ tips for Boston where he suggested the virtues of having a wide-mouthed water bottle and a long rain vest, I though, hmmm, this looks JUST like what I need.

Thanks for reading.

Guess you're as crazy as me, running with sinus problems. Congratulations on the 2nd AG! Who cares about the PR when you place?

congrats Holly,

You could easily run 5k pr's if you would concentrate on them instead of distance races. They do hurt but not as long. Sounds like a nice trophy. I only save the unique or special memory medals now days. I give my regular medals away at the race to a kid who didn't win one. They seem to like it.

Congrats Holly,

Nice swag, and 2nd place prize too!. I think 5K's are hard. You know you are not pushing hard enough unless you are hurting and hating every second of it, it seems.

Glad the kids fared well. Mine would have definitely killed each other.

Wait a minute, they have Tim Horton's in the US now?? When did that happen? I can smell their brand of coffee right now, aahhhh....

Ok, I apologize for my post on the daily...Nice run even under not so terrific conditions, Holly. I too, hate 5Ks and always feel as though my heart is in my throat the last mile. Good report and glad to hear the kids were troopers.

Holly, you may not have gotten a PR but you beat last year and got 2nd in AG. That along with lots of goodies and the kids surviving makes for a pretty good day. Congratulations. I hope you shake that sinus congestion soon and that the pains are temporary.

Congrats on the AG award

hey! That's still way speedy in my book! My 24.48 time today was brutal! Can't imagine being able to run it in even faster than that Holly. You did great and sounds like you had some good prizes too! As much as I like our little local races, the AG awards of generic ribbons is less then enthralling.

5Ks are a different race for sure, but they're still races. The trophy sounds pretty kewl. What did you wear and why didn't you go to Chuck E Cheese???

Nice job of racing with the kiddoes! When I first started, that was a struggle for me as well. Now they are 16 and 12. One can beat me (at shorter distances).

A 1:40 improvement over last year is GRETA!!!!

I used to be able to bribe with food. Now they're older and the stakes are highter... Just dropped $75 on indoor soccer shoes in exchange for good grades...

Tammy, I agree... nice prizes! All we get are silly little ribbons. Even the Equinox just has a triangular patch that doesn't even have the year on it.

Nice race, Holly. They can't all be PR's... especially if you've been sick. Get some rest now, you've been getting a lot of colds lately so I wonder if you're just "on the edge" too much?

The finish time might not have been what you hoped for but the AG placing and race swag sounds pretty cool! Maybe the course is a little long? Anyway, I think you did well! WTG Holly!

Congrats on the hardware. Woohoo!
I can't imagine me putting in miles you do as a parent of youngsters. Hats Off.

We use to bribe our 3 maniacs with food too.

YAY HOL!!! I was happy to hear that you won a TON of cool stuff even though you felt really icky running this race. Don't side stiches just suck? I hate short races too, way too painful.

Congrats on the 2nd place and thanks for the laugh re: your kids not killing eachother while you ran...I SO remember those days. Great race girl!

Holly,
Every course is different, maybe this is a slower one. Afterall you PR;d the course and got 2nd AG. I'd call that a great day! And your DD and DS didn't get into trouble

The 5K's are great workouts for form.

Holly, my dearest one...you are one speedy gifted runner...I just wish for once you stop being disappointing at your times and look at how gifted you are...sorry........but it is what the heart is feeling right now... Some of us in this board just dream at being half as fast as you are. Stop sister and celebrate your gift instead of being disappointed about one lousy minute. Who cares????????? You ran an amazing race. Your kids behaved well and you are well and ready to train for the next challenge.

Thanks for being an inspiration to us slow folks

Don't give up on the fiveK. They are a great speed builder, which you need. Sometimes you don't have a perfect race, but you must consider the conditions. Clearly you are improving. Spareribs

Holly, I was thinking the same thing about 5K's after I ran mine yesterday. You are super speedy girl - I think you could dress as a super hero too!

Congrats on 2nd place in your AG under less than IRC with the with and hills.

Holly,
Nice that you managed to "stagger through", for a 2nd in AG!
I'm sorry it wasn't an overall PR, I know that's what you wanted. But I go along with the personal course record. A great PR for this course, & under less than IRC.
Congratulations.
Glad the kids survived. ;-).

Holly, nice race, and a nice puppies-and-flowers report. I agree that if you hate 5Ks you're probably doing them right, and that's without the extra difficulties you had on this outing. It was worth all the loot and the quality outing with the kids, right?

Nice race Holly even without the PR. I'll never master the 5k myself, but it's a good way to get speed and test your limits. There is a Tuesday night summer 5k series where I live and I try to incorporate it into my marathon training. It may not be pretty, but I know I am going to get my legs moving and see great people too.

Nice swag and a fun time with your kids. Congrats.

Holly - continue to look at the glass as half full. As others have said, you're making great progress! Focus on the long-term (well, at least Boston!)... I'm sure all of the learning from these races is going to result in some great performances in the future!

I'm so glad you got to run this race as I know you were worried about the kid situation. Congrats to you on improving your time over last year! You are such a strong runner, Holly. That was funny about the kids breaking the trophy.
