IMT Des Moines Marathon Race report: Short version: 3:15:57 chip time 59/1428 Overall finishers 57/862 Men 5/138 Men 45-49Long version: This last weekend, DW and I traveled to Des Moines, IA for the 6th annual IMT Des Moines Marathon. This was going to be DW’s debut marathon, but some setbacks in her training forced her to switch to running the half marathon. We arrived at the expo, and visited a bit with Myron, who was going to be the 3:10 pacer for the marathon. I was expecting race morning temps to be in the upper 40’s to lower 50’s, but turned on the tube at 6:30AM to find out that the temp was 63F already. I decided to stick with my plan of hanging with the 3:10 pace group and just take self-inventory during the race and see what happens. After the gun went off, the pace group was huge, and I just hung back behind them. Myron was hitting his splits very well, and soon we were going through the hilly portions on miles 3-9. My strategy is to keep my HR beneath 170 for the marathon distance, and try to keep the average around 165. Critical Mistake: HR climbed to 182 on the short, steep hill at mile 5 (right after “Apology guy”– he was there 2 years ago and tells all the runners at mile 4.75 “Sorry about the hill up ahead!”). I also pushed it too high on the other hills as well Myron kept hitting the splits well, but my HR would climb into the upper 170’s on the uphill portions and settle back into the 160’s on the flats and downhills. We saw the tuba guy, and the harpist lady on the way out to Drake University. Had a Hermosaboy sighting at mile 12.5, and he wasn’t very far behind the Kenyans!! Just after mile 19, the early miles were coming back to haunt me. Someone poured concrete into my legs and I had to let the pace group go. I slowed down to 7:50-8:00 miles for the remainder of the race with a slight speedup for the finish line stretch. Here’s the HR and elev chart for all the data geeks….. Lesson learned: Stick to ALL of the game plan, not just part of it. DW finished the Half in 2:06 and I was real proud of her. Got to visit with the now-Elite-status Hermosaboy after the race, we had some beer…..yes!! Thanks for reading, John

I love the Christmas-y chart. very eye-appealing. You need a few blinky lights in there. Congratulations to your wife on her nice HM time! I'm duly impressed with your time. It might not have been quite what you wanted and maybe the higher than anticipated temps at the start played a factor . . . but you still ran a respectable race in a very sweet time John! ------------------ Tamalina

I think there must be some way this oddly fits in with souci's 'right brain/left brain' thread:3:15:57 chip time 59/1428 Overall finishers 57/862 Men 5/138 Men 45-49 I can't stop seeing the patterns here 3:15:57 there are three "5's" lined up below the number 3. John placed 57th of the men and his seconds were "57". the numbers 13, 14 and 15 all appear in his stats. I'm sure there are more number patterns in there but I have to stop the madness . . .

Hey John - Sorry the 3:10 didn't happen this time but I know it will soon. Still pretty impressive race. And WTG for your DW on her HM!

As always, it was great to see you.You know, if you want to hit a goal, you need me as your pacer... I will be pacing Melissa to a 3:10 next fall -- will let you know where...

Hard to argue that any plan that ended placing 5th in your AG was at all bad. A sub 3:16 race is something very few will ever reach. Nicely run overall. Hills, well one way or the other they just slow you down. The good news is they slow everybody else down too!

Mile 19 is where I walked for about a minute, because my legs were so full of lactate already. I had exceeded LT in the early miles and it caught up to me there -really painful. I perform much better on the marathon if I stay under 170HR for ALL of it.

John, nice job and nice report. One guy out of the 3:10 pace group managed to stay with me and eventually finished about 30 seconds ahead of me. I think the heat and/or humidity made the race deceptively difficult. None of my running friends hit their goals and one even dropped out around mile 21. I was impressed with your 3:15 time. At the Jeff Galloway talk he said that for every 5 degrees above 60 degrees one slows down by 30 seconds per mile (for a marathon). At the start of the race it was 60 degrees, at 9:00 it was 64 degrees, at 10:00 it was 70 degrees and at 11:00 it was 70 degrees. If the 30 second per mile slowdown is at all accurate then 3:15 would translate into something like a 3:00-3:05 race with better conditions. I did manage to stay more or less on pace for the whole race but it was much more of a struggle than I would have expected. I wish I could have been more talkative and supportive but I just didn't have it in me. As I believe you noticed, I ended up dropping the "3:10" sign at a water stop around mile 25. This was not a higher brain decision, it was just a gut reaction. I was able to run much easier afterwards so it was probably the right thing to do. That wind was infuriating. For what it's worth, I'm now inspired to run a spring marathon for a time, something I haven't done in over 2 years. Wonder what I'll shoot for! SM

Great job, John. I was there, as planned, but had a lot of runners to keep track of. I may have gotten to the beer after you and HB had moved on. Congratulations on hanging in there for a great time after perhaps going out too fast.------------------ Fortunate--a volleyballer with a running problem Profile

Well done John. You really ran a tough race. It can be very hard to recover after pushing too hard, too soon--especially when there are hills to deal with at this distance. A nice time that was even better than the number would indicate.
