But first, a plug for the Des Moines Marathon. Well organized. Very nice course, which showcases many of Des Moines positives; including the Capitol, downtown, some nice neighborhoods, the park area by the river. I would recommend this race for anyone looking for a smaller fall marathon. Also they have a half marathon and a 5k, along with marathon relay. Plus walkers are encouraged. On to my run. The numbers, 3:51:23 - with a first half in 1:47:34, 2nd half in 2:03:49. Overall 8:50 pace. 1,428 finishers. 566 female, 862 male. 306 overall, 44/138 in my age group, 240/862 in the male category. My bride and I came to Des Moines from Omaha on Saturday afternoon. Hit the expo, which was nice, lots of freebies. Relaxed, watched some football, had a nice dinner at this quirky quaint italian place. Our hotel was literally at the start/finish area. The race - ran well and just over 8:00 pace for 6-7 miles, slowed a bit and was at 8:10 pace at the half. Feeling good, weather was okay, not too warm, but a bit humid. First 3 miles were in downtown, then off to and through some neighborhoods. Over to Drake Univerisity campus. Around mile 11 we ran a lap on the U track. They had a camera on the runners, so when you came around you could see runners on the jumbotron scoreboard; nice touch. Still feeling good until mile 16. Into a park/trail area. Nice and shaded. Along the river for a bit, and then into a looping area through the park. No support other than aid stations and other runners. I was slowing, but still feeling good. The mile from 19 to 20 was were I lost concentration. Walked through water stop at 20. Miles 21-25 unfortunately I was running slower, and then walking the water stops. Regrouped, and ran it in the last 1.2. I had hope to finish in 3:45 or better; however, it was still a finish, my fastest of this year, and my 25th marathon. I will evaluate the training in a few days, see where I can improve. I already know I need to work in some more tempo runs, working at pace, and up the mileage a bit. ------------------ Dave The truth is you can always run faster; sometimes the truth hurts.

Was there a Selby who was not running yesterday? You'll have to come to Michigan some time to challenge your big bro, but it looks like a good marathon for you, finishing well under 4 hours.------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

Nice race Dave.I would agree with your assessment of the DM marathon. A great experience. If the temp could have been a little cooler and a little less wind, that would be perfect!

Nice run Dave, very fast for the first half dozen then a steady pace, nothing wrong with walking drink stations, probably a benifit to hydration. Well done Roy

This from the guy who won his ..oops, I better let him tell the story in his own sweet time. You did great, Dave. You didn't mention the hills early on, but I'm sure they took their toll. I was a spectator. I'd have looked for you if I'd known in time that you were there. Did you pick up a lei? ------------------ Fortunate--a volleyballer with a running problem Profile

Dave, lots of positives to take away from this race. With more tempos and mileage, you can take good aim at that 3:45. Congrats on your finish.

hmmmm. This sounds like a winner for a Boomer Fall Marathon meet-up.1. Smaller marathon; few crowds to fight. *check* 2. Has a half marathon & 5K and is walker-friendly. *check* 3. Local running lore (in this case, Drake Univ). *check* 4. Nice scenery. *check* 5. Well organized *check* 6. Hotel close to start-finish line *check* The only question in my mind is weather -- would like to look at annual stats for mid-October to see what to expect normally. Oh! Heh. Forgot to say, well done, Dave! Fastest this year; excellent!

Congrats on your 25th and on a sub-4. I agree, having run the DMM last year. Running into Drake was fun and it is well organized--the out and backs are a nice touch, as you get to the really fast runners and also the special guys like Tom D who are pacing and encouraging their packs of runners. It was a fine running weekend, and the Red Sox won. big grins, A

Fastest for the year is good, Dave!It sounds you're right on with your assessment and with some slight changes that 3:45 should be yours next time. Thanks for the Des Moines review. I didn't even know they had a marathon!

Nice report Davey!I like the part about "...relaxed, watched some football" and "...quaint Italian place..." Also, another marathon under 4 hours, I like that part, too. This was fun.

Finishing 25 marathons is quite an accomplishment! Very impressive. The jumbotron sounds really neat. Too bad it is not at more races.

Nice marathon, Dave, Like you, I lost it also at mile 19. It was that portion of the trail where I thought the wind was straight-on. Congrats on marathon #25!! How many years of marathon running did it take you to get there? John

Thanks for the support/comments.To answer some questions. I hope to run a marathon with big brother Tom in the future, we just have to plan and commit. No, I didn't get a lei - they seemed to be out by the time I got there. I agree Des Moines would be good for a Boomer meet and greet fall destination. Davey! Only my mom calls me that! Made me laugh. I have been running marathons since 1998 - do 2 or 3 a year, so it took 10 years to get to 25. Thanks again. dave
