At one time or another, I've been in races with each of my family but this is the first time all four of us were in the same race.End results: Tom 2:02:58 9:24/mile 17/69 in AG 1677/4721 OA DW Ann (walk) 3:08:37 14:23/mi 10/23 in AG 135/323 OA DS Tom,jr 2:06:07 9:37/mi 141/237 in AG 1925/4721 OA DD Sandy 2:12:53 10:09/mi 158/302 in AG 2555/4721 OA Pre race goals: Tom - anything under a 9:30 pace would be fine. Dream 2:00. Major stretch 1:57:46 my PR which I view as a fluke. Ann - beat a 15:00 pace. Wanted to match Crim 10 mile pace of 14:23 on 25 Aug. Tom,jr - about the same as mine. Dream of 2:00 Sandy -When Uncle Dave (selb3) ran with her last summer, he set her a goal of 2:15 (10:18 pace). She wanted to get it but it would be better than her Mackinac Island 8 mile pace of 10:48 on 8 Sept. At the expo on Saturday, we saw Chris from Saginaw who was running his first marathon. He was there with his wife and sister-in-law who were doing the half. Sunday, we arrived early and easily found parking using MarkGuy's suggestions. Mark has already reported the temperature was ideal. We were concerned about the wind but never felt it an issue, even on the bridge into Canada. Tom, jr and I were in the same corral and planned to start together. I'll repeat a little of Mark's description of the course. As usual, the start was a bit crowded and slow but it improved fairly quickly. Tom and I were pretty consistently a bit under 9:30 pace through downtown Detroit, Mexican town, past the old Tiger Stadium, and to the Ambassador Bridge into Canada (about 4 miles). The crowd support was great. The run up the bridge to the middle wasn't as bad as I'd expected and the run down the other side was great. The view from the top of the bridge was neat. We were encouraged by the Custom's people on both sides, including a high five. In Canada we ran through residential areas along the river and then into downtown Windsor. Again, there was fantastic crowd support. Tom and I were still together at a bit under a 9:30 pace. As we entered the tunnel back to Detroit (about mile 8), I thought of the fact that they time and post the times for the "underwater mile" and that I should try to make it a good mile. As we did the first half gently down, I realized that Tom had dropped back some and I didn't know if it was just a few steps or a lot. About the time we finished the uphill grade at the end of the tunnel, Tom was back beside me. Our "underwater mile" was done in 8:51. In the last few miles, we went by Cobo Hall and into the center of Detroit with more crowd support. Around mile 10, Tom dropped back again and I didn't see him until the finish. Just after finishing, I was near the side of the road and a lovely, twenty something looking, lady got my attention and asked if I was Tom. She identified herself as dg9. It was neat moving another boomer (if she's legitimately old enough) from the "imaginary friend" category to the "real" category. We exchanged a few words and I told her I wanted to see my son finish as he was right behind me. I said I try to get back. I did catch Tom at the finish and we fought our way out of the finish area, getting water and food. By the time we got out, we were on the other side of the road from dg9 and several blocks away with no apparent way to get past the barricades to where she was. We were a couple blocks before the finish and tried to get close to the road in hopes of seeing Sandy. While we were watching, my phone rang. It was Sandy, already finished, wondering where we were. After fighting the crowds and barricades, we got together and tried to find dg9. Probably 45 minutes had passed since I saw her and we didn't have any luck. Sorry, Deb, we tried. We found a grassy spot at the end of the finish area and sat down to wait for Ann. After a bit, Sandy's phone rang. Ann was done and wondered where we were. Ironically, she was sitting on the same grassy spot with her back to us and was about 10 feet behind us. We were all walking funny and feeling tired but satisfied with our results and being able to share the experience. Thanks for reading. TomS ------------------ My Profile

As the saying goes...."a good time was had by all".Thanks for the report. I have often marvelled at the view from the Ambassador Bridge at the speed of traffic. I can only imagine how nice it would be at a marathon pace. Thanks for sharing this RR and Congratulations to all four of the tselbs. ------------------ vista129

Way to Team Selby. Memories are priceless! Didn't know Sandy was going to take that goal to heart. Looks like it worked! Congrats to all. I am impressed with Ann's under 15:00 pace for walking. That's not really "walking" that's power/striding/walking! Also Tom Jr., you will have to train a bit to stay with Sr. next time!Very good! Congratulations. dave

A hearty congratulations to the entire tselbs clan! And the "old man" of the group takes top honors, upholding the B&B tradition. Having run that course several times for the full & half marathons, I always enjoy hearing from someone experiencing it for the first time. Detroit can really look good at times like that, and you certainly had a perfect day to do it. ------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

Tom – all 4 of you getting to run together – how awesome is that? Too bad you couldn’t find Debbie again – I hate trying to find people in crowds like that, but overall it looks like a great time was had. Nice racing, all four of you!

That was really enjoyable to read. I am envious you have the whole family participating like that. What a joy. What would we do without cell phones?? Better planning I guess.

Another nice run, Tom, and the fond memories your reports usually bring. I remember driving over the bridge and also under the tunnel, but could not have imagined running over and under than river--at least not back then. Now it sounds like it would be great fun.Jim
