Goals: 1. BQ (3:30) 2. PR (Previous Philadelphia 2005; 3:36:30 Chip time)Training: Pfitzinger 18 week plan with peak at 55 miles per week Variables (or excuses): Weather: Overcast skies 62 degrees; 90% humidity. The water stops: Miles 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 17, 19, 20, 23. What ever happened to 2, 4, 6, ….? No chips : although this was not a factor =seconds not minutes, it seemed a little unusual Execution: The weather was a little warm and humid for my liking so I tossed the shirt before the start and just raced in my black Race Ready shorts and bright green Saucony shoes. The ProfromDover joined me and a few friends from VA for the start. He helped me keep a consistent pace (target 7:50 to 7:55) early in the race—through 12. The first mile was a little slow due to the crowds 8:25. Then, 2-7:49, 3-7:36, 4-8:00, 5-7:47, 6-7:49, 7-7:48, 8-7:47, 9-7:53, 10-8:10 (water stop?), 11-7:45, 12-7:58, 13-7:26(down hill), 14-7:56, 15-7:54, 16-8:06 (water stop?), 17-7:56, 18-8:37 (water and hill) At the hill at 17.5 I just didn’t have the energy to keep the pace. 19-8:19, 20-9:13 No energy, 21-10:30 Walked part of a long hill, 22-8:40 starting to recover and smell the finish ,23-8:29, 24-8:20, 25-8:28 (Nice hill right before 25 mile marker –walked to conserve energy for the finish), 26-8:27 (Down hill) @ 26.2 ----3:35:35; 90th finisher out of ?? (final results not posted) Results: Missed the BQ but set a new PR. I was happy with my early pacing but with the high humidity I could have used more frequent water stops. My fueling was off a bit: I usually do gu’s at 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 but do to water stop placement did 6, 12, 17, 20, 23. Second half also had some hills that took a toll. The race course is beautiful with –mansions, parks, ocean, sail boats, surfers, … And, the post race meal features Lobster and chowder. Definitely worth putting on your marathon list. As for me, I’ll be looking for a winter race featuring a flat fast course.

You ran a great race Spacecadet. Congrats on your new PR. With a post race lobster dinner and the view you described it seems to me this is one of those "must do" races.

Congrats on the PR! You picked a fairly challenging course to do it on. I was there too. quote: Originally posted by spacecadet: The water stops: Miles 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 17, 19, 20, 23. What ever happened to 2, 4, 6, ….?
Not to mention... nothing but plastic cups?! The first time I tried to squeeze one shut to sip out of it, it cracked, dumping the Gatorade down my shirt. But it was a beautiful course. And overall, very well organized, I thought. The lobster (= a whole lobster per finisher) was a nice touch.

Great job getting a new PR. It sounds like you would have BQ'd given lower humidity and, maybe, more water stops. Next time!Dark Horse ------------------ I'm a dark horse, running on a dark race course

Nice, PR, spacecadet. I agree 3,6,9,... isn't enough. We did some research on winter 'thons for BQ and found last chance in Ohio (26 laps around a 1 mile course), and Myrtle Beach, SC. There's also one in FL, I forget where (Tampa?). We probably would have gone to Myrtle. Best of luck in your quest. Lou

Spaceman,You looked good through 13, and actually looked good at the finish. Maybe you should not have stopped for the lobster and chowder in the second half. Good job pulling in a PR; too bad those few minutes slipped away re the 3:30. Definitely not enough water on the course considering the humidity. It may be fuel and hydration that bring you in under 3:30. CRaig edited to add: BTW, it was great running with you. I didn't realize until arriving that you brought a whole VA contingent with you. Nice folks and some very good runners. For other's info, John Pigget came in 3rd OA (Wow!), Tom O50 (like me) ran a 3:15, Steve ran a 3:31, Lisa ran 8's with us though 12, and Byron has 48 states covered with complete marathons. You hang with a pretty cool running crowd! [This message has been edited by TheProFromDover (edited Oct-23-2007).]

Nice race, space!! Your description of the course makes me want to run it next year. Wish they had chip timing. The lobster sounds great as well. Congrats on the PR - you're definitely within spitting distance of a BQ. ------------------ Sue

Did you go out of your way to find a hot and humid race? Yuck. With better weather, you're definitely Boston-bound. Solid PR under these conditions. Congrats.

Congrats on a PR. I know you have been training hard for a BQ but I also have been to Newport and knew there were a lot of hills in the area. You are thisclose and will get there. Sounds like a nice getaway and lobster after woohoo!!

I too think that you have the sub 3:30 on a better day, maybe the same program you have but with a nudge upward in weekly mileage, say to about 60? If that can be done. You had a nice pace going but the humidity can be taxing. You've really improved considerably Ralph and you have the next one in the bag. Nice work. Spareribs

Nice run. Certainly toughed it out and ran strong to the finish. And a PR to boot is awesome. Way to go Spacecadet!------------------ Dave The truth is you can always run faster; sometimes the truth hurts.

Congrats on the PR, spacecadet. Nice RR, too. I agree completely about the sparse aid stations and plastic cups; I hope the RD gets an earful. Weather is the one variable we don't have much control over, and I hope you have better luck next time. Good luck getting that BQ next time.------------------ Fortunate--a volleyballer with a running problem Profile

I agree with the others - you're sooo close. A flatter course, lower temps, more water... - any of these would have made the difference. Your next attempt in the winter will be the winner!Thx for a great report and congratulations on the PR. ------------------ Predawnrunner, aka mrs W.R.F. Beer

Congrats on your PR, Space Cadet! That BQ is just around the corner with some cooler conditions. I wouldn't like those odd numbered water stations either. I'm doing good to count by 2's let alone 3's.------------------ choover

SC, nice race. The heat and humidity will slowly sap the energy from your legs as your body tries to keep itself cool. But, you didn't need to stop off for a lunch of lobster and chowder. I'll second the comments about adding a few more weekly miles. I was stuck around 3:35 for a while while running 50ish miles a week. When I inceased to 60 miles per week, I got my sub 3:30 BQ. Glad to hear that Piggot had a great race too. Rest up and get back to training. I want to hear your going to Boston next time out. ------------------ Good running!!! Mike's Profile
