Siouxland Lewis & Clark Marathon -- Oct. 20, 2007

Because the explorers, Lewis and Clark, covered so much territory two centuries ago, it is not surprising that there are three marathons named after them (in IA/NE, MO, and MT). Including Siouxland in the name of this one serves to distinguish it from the others (it also differs from the others in being later in the fall). The route starts in South Sioux City, NE, ends in Sioux City, IA, and goes along the Big Sioux River, so the name makes sense. It includes scenic views of that river as well as the Missouri River, with its wide floodplain, striking, bluffs, and loess hills. The course goes through a nice (but hilly) state park north of town, with Wild Turkey sightings a distinct possibility. Lots of history, too, like the stone obelisk memorializing one of the explorers. I love the subject line of a RR on marathonguide.com: Sgt. Floyd died here, and I almost joined him.

This post is a placeholder for the RR I will post some time after Saturday (seeking CR Boomer sightings at the Des Moines Marathon on Sunday may delay my report). I wanted to get my goals “out there” ahead of time, so there’d be no dodging them.

Goals:
Finish in 3:45:59 (PR, BQ ’08, ‘09)
Run even splits
Remember to press the timer button on my Garmin at the finish

Fall-back goal:
Finish in 4:00:59 (BQ ’09)

The temptation to set a faster finishing time goal (darn that McMillan ) has diminished as the forecast high temperature on race day has crept up over the last few days to the high 60’s.

To accomplish my main goal, I plan to listen to Econo and start slow, listen to Hermosaboy (Shut up and run) when the going gets tough, and mimic Holly’s strength towards the end.

I’ll be back …

Good luck, Fortunate One. I like your innovative approach of posting a race report before the race.

See, that’s the one that gets me...

Good luck, Fortunate One! Sending out lots of {{{great race}}} vibes to you, including all my leftover unused ones, since I'm done with my big races of the season and won't be needing them.

Whew, that is a relief, I thought Spankee had really opened a time warp.
Good luck on your marathon, Fortunate One! I am sending you lots of smiles, especially for miles 18 and 19.

I guess I have to work on my karma. I posted the placeholder (1st message in this thread) full of confidence, bordering on cockiness. Yesterday I learned that I have a lot to learn about marathoning (this was #3). I was so looking forward to revisiting my goals, one by one, putting done by each. Alas, I met about one and a half

Goals:
Finish in 3:45:59 (PR, BQ ’08, ‘09) 3:50:55
Run even splits nope
Remember to press the timer button on my Garmin at the finish 12 seconds late, which DH may consider good enough for government work

Fall-back goal:
Finish in 4:00:59 (BQ ’09) done

The marathon and Half were well organized at it was, until the end, a fun race. We started by going through a grassy park next to the Missouri River where The Wall That Heals (traveling half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial) was set up. I started at 7 a.m., so the sun was just coming up as we crossed a bridge from Nebraska to Iowa at about mile 6. Nice trails along the river, a view of the point of South Dakota. Nice downhill (net elevation drop of 120 ft)) on mile 13. The dreaded Hill (Mr. Garmin says 450 ft. in 2 miles) was not until miles 15.5-17.4, and my plan was to take things easy until then, suffer the hill, then make up time bit by bit on the long downhill. Instead, I met the Wall That Hurts. Even with a 138 ft. estimated drop in elevation over one mile (21), I couldn't pick up the pace to where It needed to be to get a BQ for '08. I took 5 Gus altogether, and walked through every aid station to get Powerade or water. No cramping or potty stops. I am kind of at a loss to explain those last few miles unless dehydration was thickening my blood or I just didn't have the guts to do what must be done.

Splits (Mr Garmins says it was 26.27 miles, so I think these are only high by about a second):
9:09 8:21 8:31 8:25 8:24 8:25 8:27 8:30 8:29 8:37
8:33 8:55 7:56 8:33 8:44 8:44 9:29 9:11 8:38 8:29
8:55 8:53 8:56 9:25 9:45 9:58 9.26

The post-race party was fun. Free pizza at Buffalo Alice's (15 beers on tap). Also in there was the awards ceremony. There were 114 men running the marathon, and few enough in the geezer class that I won 2nd place for Senior Masters (55 and older), which came with a check for $50 (almost enough to cover my registration fee).

I am recovering well. I think I'll look for a flat course for my next BQ attempt.

FortunteOne, that heat sounds tough. Sorry you didn't get your '08 BQ, but it will still be there when Econo runs it. Looks like it was much cooler today. Bummer. Good luck learning more on #4.

Nice run fortunateone. Hey it's a BQ and an age group award. That is awesome! I have run Siouxland and that hill through the park is a killer! Way to suck it up and finish strong.

Ouch, a long 450-foot hill? That's gotta hurt. Along with the "wall that hurts"! Sounds like a tough one.

Despite it all, you did great, BQ and bringing home some placement $$ too! Congratulations,

I don't like the sound of a Wall That Hurts, FO, but on the plus side, no stops, no cramps '09 BQ, 2nd AG, and money! Not a bad day, all in all.

Sure, why not look for that flat course? You can snooze through to a BQ.

I don't know about snoozing, but I could do a better job of picking marathons if I want to go fast. After Big Sur last spring, I thought this would be a piece of cake. The Hill surprised me (check out the elevation profile); I had expected only a 300-ft. hill. Oh well, I'm in this mainly to marvel at the human body and its adaptability. I have discovered that big hills really affect me--Doh! I still have time for another attempt; CIM looks promising.

Thanks for all the kind words and congratulations.

Good run, Fortunate One. Congratulations on the AG 2nd and another BQ. Sounds like a fun course, although not the easiest. A less challenging one next time should be good for a new PR.

Hey Fortunate Son,

You got your 09 BQ and some nice prize money to go with that pizza. Nice going! I didn't realize there were 3 L & C marathons but did know about the one in MT.

I hope you are recovering well.

Good run, Fortunate One!
Congrats on the BQ for '09. I'd be willing to bet you could still get a BQ for '08 with the right course yet.
Have you thought about RNR Arizona? (flat, fast, nice weather).
I got my first BQ there, so I might be a little biased.....
Take care,
John
