Topic: Bellingham Inaugural...a confession....a marathon RR ..and a 37 minutes PR |

It is time for a confession. Many of you may think that my primary focus to going to Bellingham this past weekend was to run the marathon. Well... that was the driving force of the trip, but who can think of a marathon when there were so many other things to enjoy such as meeting cyberspace boomer friends such as Opie, Erika, Peter, Gordon, Tet, Soundie and little Miss Lynden? When ...there was also a double birthday party celebration for two gorgeous boomer goddesses to enjoy? And... then there was the slumber party and the hours of giggles, hoola hoping, belly dancing, drinking, joking, toenail painting, and jump roping fun to be had with the birthday girls (Jura, you were sorely missed dear sistahhhhhh)
All that preceded, of course... by all the drinks provided by Tet and the other boomers (which made hydration a major issue the next day... ) Now, please look at the ribbon Tet is wearing...that is the badge of honor we gave him as we also celebrated his 30th years of marathon running . Cheers to you Tet...you are such an inspiration to many of us. Well... with so much food, drinking, belly dancing and laughter it was mighty difficult to wake up the next day and go run a marathon, specially when I looked outside and saw the wind and the dark clouds... and knowing fully well the effect of wind with my asthma I knew I would be in trouble. I must admit...I could have easily stayed in bed and just drive back home that morning...but I needed a bib number and a race shirt to bring back home to my family so... off I went to the starting line to run the 26.2 miles. I will not bore you all with the details of how the weather was or how romantic the race course was, since Tet and Soundie did such a good job at doing all that. But I will tell you that their description, even dough they were well done, they come short of the beauty of the Bellingham marathon course. Boomers, this is a must do marathon. The setting is just perfect. The beauty of the scenery, the pre-race party, and the encouragement of my boomer friends (it helps to get a few hugs and kisses also ), running with Opie the first couple of miles, meeting up and running with Tet for a while until he ditched me , being cheered by Soundie and Peter (Erika's husband) made me grateful for the opportunity to run this marathon. The turn around point found at 2:39 and in the arms of my newly adopted dear father Tet. After he gave me a hug, he instructed me to run as fast as I could before I go back to the bay where the wind was howling and the rain was nasty. I did just that and for the next 8 miles (miles 14 to 22 ) I ran at a pace I did not even know I could run (between 8 to 9 minute miles). This faster pace helped me finish the marathon at 4:36:57, which is a 36 minutes PR from my last marathon. So...all in all I must say...this was a marathon worth running... I came back to Omak with my bib number and my race shirt...and I am already ready to go back there again. Any taker? [This message has been edited by mariposai (edited Oct-10-2007).]

What a wonderful report you wrote! I really enjoyed reading it and so wish I could have been there to take part in all that fun. Congratulations on totally annihilating your PR!! Gosh, maybe this is some new sekrit weapon of yours - drink and party and jump rope the night before and run a fantastic marathon the next day! congratulations Mariposai!! ------------------ Tamalina

dear mariposai. although I despaired after losing you on the mile four hill into the first of the forest trails, I knew everything was all right, and I couldn't have been prouder, when the mile six volunteers said, "your daughter said she's real proud of you Mr. Barefoot." Like sounder's rr, you spend too much time honoring others but your perfect run and huge negative split after preparing the boomer reunion and birthday party, organizing the carbo feed at Guiseppe's, being in the rainy parking lot with sounder as I approached the finish, etc. makes it clear who it is to honor. Congratulations and thanks for everything, . . . and good luck this Saturday as RD of your home town community-wide Autumn Leaf Run. I hope sooner but see you next year for sure. ========================================== [This message has been edited by Tetsujin30 (edited Oct-10-2007).] - ETA [QUOTE]Originally posted by mariposai: running with Opie the first couple of miles, meeting up and running with Tet for a while . . . nancy - the official results show I crossed the timing mat at the start nearly three minutes after you guys (and I was running way slower behind you and opie in those early miles too) so your PR would have been even bigger except for you waiting and making sharing your joy of running with your boomer friends as much a part of your running as your running. thank you. 36 minutes PRWow, papillon/mari. That is phenomenal. No doubt, the good vibes that come from being with good friends help, but you've trained hard over the summer and even with the windy conditions, it all came together for you. Or maybe it's the belly dancing. Now, a bit of rest and recovery is in order.

Dear Mariposai, thanks for such a wonderful report of not only the race but the other activities as well! I had so much fun, it was sometimes hard to remember we were there to run a race! You did so well, I was so happy for you. I was very concerned when we were out on the boardwalk and that wind was taking my breath away, I hoped you were doing ok. Sounds like you did just fine. Congratulations on your huge PR (I knew it was a PR, but didn't realize how much!), and for being such a wonderful party organizer. I know DH and I had a wonderful time... Thanks again!------------------ evanflein

Hi Mariposai,What a great report! And what an amazing race - a 37-minute PR is just phenomenal, especially when you had to deal with howling wind and nasty rain on part of your journey. Partying all night the night before a marathon seems to be the right prescription for some Boomer gods and goddesses.I'm glad that you all had such a good time, that the course was so beautiful, and that you ran such a greta race! I know you'll be every bit as successful at putting on the Autumn Leaf Run as you were running the Bellingham Marathon! Jay

Mariposa,(he he. You're as bad as Tet with all the tall tales of over the top frivolity...okay, me, too.) Amiga, I am so proud of you. Can't even put it into words. I know how hard you've been working the past several months and I'm so thrilled for you that it paid off. To see you come across the finish, looking so strong in that wind and rain, and then get that looooong bear hug -- well, it was easily the highlight of the weekend. You now know how to do the marathon training. You also know how far I think you can go, too. You have the strength to do it. Get some rest now and try to pamper yourself for a few days as best you can... you have a busy weekend ahead of you!

Now I understand the timing of the BellyDance and Portland Pounder marathons being on the same day. All of us together in one place would have been too much of a great thing. EXCELLENT PR, Mme Butterfly. You were a fantastic hostess to put this great soiree together. Happy belated birthdays to the twin beauties! glidegal

Mariposa, congrats on the big PR! You know, from what everyone is saying, you sound like a real gem. To make all those arrangements so that the Boomers could have so much pre-race fun and comraderie, is fantastic. If there is a repeat get-together next year at Bellingham, count me in!enke
