Topic: 5K PR - An EZ run!!! |

Well, I finally raced a 5K PR this season and the worst part is that it was easy. Meaning I went out conservatively as others ran crazily around me. Bunch of XC team's from the local high schools went out at sub 3 minute K pace. At first you think your out of your league but then you start reeling them in and it feels good. One young guy went out fast and hung on. He had about 30 seconds or so on me at the half way point before I started picking up ground. I had moved into second by then passing over 15 or 20 overly eager runners. It shows I have not raced much recently because I knew that if I went out hard I could catch him or at least lose to him in a sprint finish. I wimped out and although I did catch up some but I (hmmm) coasted. I cannot believe I ran 17:16.3 while coasting somewhat. Finished strong when I saw the clock reading sub 17 as I turned the corner. When I saw that I realized if I had kicked ass I could have gone sub 17!!!! If things hold the way they are, I may just have a great race in my half marathon next weekend. Second overall in the race and 1st in my age group. What a fun run. Tall

Wow, TallRunner!! That is really an impressive race! Must feel good to have the patience to let the younger ones go smokin' off the start line, only to eat them up later on the course. Keep up the fine running!! Sub-17 next?? That is soooo fast for a boomer. I'm jealous. John

Tall. Maybe it seemed easy because you were relaxed? Just a thought. 17:16 is a great time. You'll go Sub 17 next time!!!

Superb, Tall! Loved the line about at first feeling out of your league, but then reeling them in. What fun! Look forward to reading about your half.
