Brutal...humbling...DNFI reached mile 25 after 7 hours on the course, stomach problems and legs cramp so bad I couldn't even walk for several minutes: I decided to drop. I never expected the course to get so steep that I would have to scramble up mountain sides grabbing roots for support (the course description was rather vague and there were no elevation profiles). Running this course was the second hardest thing I've ever done, the only thing harder was dropping out. It's not in my nature to quit, but I knew if I continued I'd either a) get injured or b) never want to run again. I learned a ton about ultra running, it was great training, and I'm proud of myself for knowing when to stop. Now I've got a score to settle with the 50k distance. -Dove ------------------ My Profile [This message has been edited by Dove61 (edited Oct-07-2007).]

Tough going Dove. That sounded like a brutal course for a first 50k. I DNFed my first 50k. We'll be back. jjj

sounds like you made the correct, difficult, decision dove. i had a dnf once. it was followed by a year of fast races. take some time to recover, then, ummm, take the sucker down.

We here all know you're no wimp, so you dropping was obviously the right decision. You'll settle that score, no doubt. You were missed in Bellingham! Next year, we hope... Krista

Thanks for the report. I almost called to see how it went. I'm so glad you didn't get hurt. We had some tough hills today but nothing like that.------------------ My Profile

Dove, Sounds like you made the decision to stop at the right time. You will be a smarter and healthier runner in the future because of it. Wow, sounds like the NorthFace threw a really tough course at you there. I ran in Des Moines and the course was relatively flat and easy. Keep up the great work, you will conquer the 50K very soon! I hate reading about DNF's but in you case it sounds like the right decision. The next time you can take what you learned and conquer the distance. Good luck.

wow Dove, that does sound brutal. Mile 25 at 7 hrs, and knowing your ability and capability at a marathon distance, really shows that this was a tough one for you. I'm proud of you though for stopping (I don't call it quitting!) when you knew that that was what was best. You'll get it next time!------------------ Tamalina

Jeeze Louise, 50K is hard enough on an easy course! Having to scramble up mountainsides with roots for hand-holds in the middle of a 50K isn't exactly easy. You made the good, albeit difficult call, Dove. DNFing beats getting injured by a lot, so don't feel guilty for making the smart call. I have no doubt that you'll be back to conquer the 50K.Jay

I'm with Tammy; there's a difference between stopping and quitting. And you stopped, wisely. You'll make it next time.------------------ Lil Engine (aka Welsh Pony) "I think I can, I think I can"

Dove, I read your later post first - you made a great choice and have every reason to be proud of your accomplishments (going 25 very tough miles, and knowing when to stop). Actually, glad to see your post period - I've missed you here lately! You're the only B&B'er I've met in person (Capital City) even though I didn't know it at the time! Glad to hear about and learn from your experience! Thanks for posting this!

...dove//....this was a Killer Course,,,,,,,,,,,,it took a lot to hang in as long as you did,and not crippling yourself is the mark of a good runner,,,,,,, ,a One Shot Effort isn't what you were going for....you'll be back ......tough call, but good thinking........

dove,I'm not surprised that you're already signed up for another 50K. From comments over the years, I'd thought that the mountainous climbs in the White River 50 Mile Endurance Run in the foothills of Mt. Rainier were among the toughest in local area events. however, I met one of the gals who excels at the White River and she said that the same distance in the 50 mile edition of the North Face Challenge you did on Cougar Mountain took her three hours longer! So many injuries occur during when the darkness comes in the fall and winter ultras around here. You were so wise to defer to another day.

Congrats on a wise decision, Dove! I hope once the dust settles that you share what you've learned through this experience. That's the part of these RRs I like best. Best of luck in your next 50K! I know you'll conquer the distance. PJ
