OK, if anyone didn't hear about the weather -- IT SUCKED!!!

This race was a qualified success in that I SERIOUSLY thought about a DNF. Survived to run my second fastest 10 miler ever and reconfirmed my HATRED of the TCM course!

Just the facts...

74/5080 Overall
72/2015 Males
4/268 Age Group

Went into the race with an aggressive, but realistic goal of trying to go sub 57. Got out comfortably hard in around 5:40 for the first mile and was just finding space. Mile two had a nice downhill and I took advantage to throw in a 5:32.

Then the hills begin in earnest. Survived mile 3 in 5:54 (although it seemed to be a bit short). Just trying to stay on it, but my hamstrings are feeling terrible and it is starting to radiate to my lower back. Just keep running.

There's a few runners around that I am trying to work with, but it's getting pretty spread out.

Mile 4 comes in 5:51. REALLY fighting my head. Gotta stay on it.

Mile 5 has some hills to it -- 6:08. Hmm -- 57 is definitely out the door. 58?

Mile 6 -- pretty much all uphill in 6:27. 59???

Mile 7 -- still uphill -- 6:13.

Now I am doing mental math -- can I break an hour? I toggle the garmin and see that I am at a 6:01 average. Can I pick it enough at the end?

Mile 8 -- a little downhill -- 6:03.

At this point, I am going back and forth with the runner that outkicked me at the 25k a few weeks ago. Gotta try to beat him!!!

Time to PUSH!

Mile 9 -- 5:59

Mile 10 -- DOWNHILL -- take the brakes off and go -- clock comes into view 59:38. PUSH!!! 5:48.

Official finish time of 59:56 (I had it two seconds faster -- meh). AVG HR 167 and a MAX of 184 (I believe that is a new record).

BTW -- they are showing a split of 36:01 but not saying the distance. If that's 10k, that would be a PR assuming the distance is correct.

For MN RED, with a small turn out, we had 5 DNFs combined in the 10 mile and marathon. Most dropped early and are now heading to Des Moines in two weeks.

Photos in place of a fashion report.

Very nice run in outrageous conditions. You left out a few details though. How did you survive without compression shorts? What happened to the guy you were trying to outkick at the end?

Compression shorts were left off for the sake of the boomer goddesses. Now that I think of it, maybe that would have helped with the hamstring issues?

As for the other guy -- I beat him.

Hello MinnesotaBoy!

We were camping north of the Twin Cities this weekend and when I stepped out of the camper at 9 or so this morning, the first thing I thought about was the marathon and 10 Mile runners. The weather was exactly like Omaha in 2005 when we had a Boomer gathering there. Hot, sticky and humid that early is just not right for september or october! I went for a 2 mile hike with DH, and that was about all I wanted to do.

Congrats on your race, 4th in your AG is awesome! I suppose the prizes go down to third, but you did well in extreme conditions. I know that those hills can be brutal. Your pictures are nice too. thanks.

It was a little warm to run hard. Your time is pretty darn good.

tough weather conditions, but you ran a great race despite it all. Hard to believe that October in MN was this warm. There's usually a nice Indian Summer, but this was more than that. My friend, brent, ran the full marathon so I'm anxious to hear how he did in that with those conditions.

Hey Rob,
That was a fantastic run, considering the heat and humidity. I can't believe that you ran within 2 minutes of your 10 mile PR in those crappy conditions.
This really proves that you are in prime shape to take on Des Moines in 2 weeks.....
Kinda proud of how you pushed that HR up there into no-man's land. You said you seriously were considering a DNF? Was that at the same time your HR was shooting up over 180?
Way to gut it out and dig down deep!!

Nope -- that was much earlier.

If you look at the chart, I hit the 184 around mile 7.5 (the end of the 2 mile hill climb).

The DNF thoughts were around mile 3 (the Franklin hill climb).

They were there until just before I hit the max HR though...

When I went out for my shake out run at 4:00 am, it was 74 degress and I assume the humidty was close to that.

It just got worse from there...

hermosa, way to stay tough and finish strong. It's encouraging to know that you super-human types sometimes wrestle with mental demons too. Very impressive race.

How's your shoulder?

Hermosa,

Fantastic run in very tough conditions. Way to hold on and finish strong. Are those tartan shorts? Colorful kind of guy are you. I guess if your fast you can be.

Congrats

Wow! That kind of time is impressive any time, but under those conditions, and with those hills...wow. If I come to MN to race, can I put on roller blades and have you pull me?

Wow, hermosa, that was fine running. To consider a DNF due to heat and hills and then have your second best 10 miler by finishing under an hour is just beyond my comprehension. Congratulations.

Chalk up another one for the Racing Machine,

I think that running tough in heat like this can have a positve effect if you have a good recovery. You should be primed for Des Moines.

Nice running and good luck in the big one
