Econo, with walking a full mile and only 23 miles a week—and only a minute off your PR. You did just fine. I don't think you blew it at all.

you didn't blow it at all. You ran a courageous, gutsy race, came close to your PR and walked home with some valuable experience. I call this a successful race. Not to mention sounds like you had a great time in the company of your friends. Congratulations! As for recovery, what the others said...

Whoa, I am so glad to hear you didn't hurt yourself, young lady. Good report, for being brutally honest and funny, too. I surely hope I get to see you again in the near future.

You know, in light of all the chat and concern over Chicago, I have to say I'm a bit worried about anyone reading about your experience and thinking they might try a marathon on 25 mpw average mileage. If they do, I'd urge going out with a run/walk strategy and being very conservative for the first 18 miles.

Hope you're feeling better today and fully upright, etc!

I have to kind of echo what Aamos said. But, I do recall you having some good 40 mile weeks in there, so it wasn't so low every week, no?

In any event, way to hang tough. And a PR!

Tummy troubles are no fun. You're a strong woman, and I know the next one will be better and faster. But, if you don't have at least 35-40 miles a week on you going in, though.... grrrrrr...you'll get a slap upside the head from me. A truly caring one, though.

Hi Aamos! (and thank you for your kind comments, everyone)

Reading this thread juxtaposed with the Chicago thread does give me pause. I ran the long runs on schedule (but only two of them over 20 miles), yet had only 605 miles under my belt, year to date, due to my foot injury.

I have resolved to very slowly build my base from 20 to 40 mpw. This may be tricky, given my PF-plagued foot. If it proves impossible to work up to 40 mpw (consistently, not as a "high point" in a marathon schedule), I should limit my racing to half marathon or shorter distances.

And now for October, a well deserved rest.

Good job---close to a PR while training through foot troubles. When you get healthy, that PR will fall. Sounds like some fun memories as well. Wish we could have been there.

I still need to find a good race in Oregon---let us know when you find your next race. My next run out West is Stinson Beach, CA on Nov 3. I will be out there on business and the course looked too beautiful to pass up. It may be a bit hilly ---4400' of elevation change. I won't be trying for a PR on that course.

Congratulations! Getting even close to a PR on that few training miles is tough!

Btw, the 'know your pace' is obviously hard for everyone. Without a good fitness test race, it is mostly a guess anyway.

as your three lessons show, there's never, ever such a thing as blowing a marathon but please amend the last rule to "23 mpw average doth not a fastmarathoner make." thanks.

What was your planned and actual ascent of the mile 17 hill and on up to the top of the St. John's Bridge?

ps - I'll check with divechief in case we can help recreate the conditions of a proper redeeming marathon.

[guiltridden] Ack, I blew it.

I'm a lousy pacer. The lengths one must go to to have two hours with a busy friend!

For those who know Econo, you're already aware that she's a tough one to pin down for any length of time. Soooo ... you do what you must to try to get some quality time with her. Stoopid me, I could have had MORE time had I been a little more strict with sticking to pace (with permission, I'll dig out those times and post them. The first 5k I believe were on target).

Oooh, and I knew the weekly mileage was low, but not that low. Eep.

You are a gritty girl, Econo, and I'm proud of you for "getting 'er done." You have the speed and moxie; as others have said, some endurance and things will be different. (Have I mentioned "Stop working so hard"?)

My only regret is not getting that drop-dead gorgeous little dress and (yet another pair of) sexy shoes out on Friday night. All in good time ... all in good time.

Now the race is over, blame must be assigned, and the long knives are coming out. Or is it the long fingernails. After pushing Tetsujin under the bus with her mileage comment, Econo has backed the bus over Sans Souci for pacing too fast.

Econo - Good for you for giving this a courageous effort. You've got guts. I like that. And one minute off of PR isn't exactly "blowing it", especially on low training mileage.

"Going out for what you're after" has pretty much been my strategy too - and I'm gonna try it again this weekend. I've had some pretty difficult finishes after injury-compromised training cycles, but being overly conservative on race day just isn't going to get me the time I'm after.

If I ever do get to Boston, however, I'm going to run slow and enjoy the experience as much as possible! At least that's what I'm telling myself now...

Now that I'm back "at work", I finally have a chance to reply to your report. (And yes, I know what you're thinking, I will write one). You did a great job, but have you been taking lessons from Tet about the low mileage? (Btw, he gave me a hard time about Missoula because it was just a half). Wait, you do a lot more training than him.

I can picture you gritting your teeth at about mile 24 and thinking, I have to beat Opie somehow. I don't know how he's doing up there but even if I walk some I can do it. And you did once again.

Is it "know thy pace" or "accept thy pace"? I think you have a great plan for training and races.

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel your pain.

Good take away lessons---no matter how much they hurt.

Still not a bad finishing time--although sometimes it is not the finishing time but how you finish that is important.

Don't worry, you will live to run another day. But for now... Ibuprofin-single malt scotch--hot bath--repeat

Econo, my hero! You are a true marathoner, and have true grit too. (that sounds like a good movie title). Tet was right to chide you to not try breaking those speed records on just 23 mpw! You did greta and had an awesome time with the B&B folks out there.

A little late reading your RR, Econo, but wanted to say 'well done'. Not that you met your goal, but that you persevered under tough conditions and more importantly, that you learned from the experience. For the record, I agree wholeheartedly with your learning - get the mileage up, know you pace (and stick to it - don't bank time) and get through the first 18 on pace and take it from there. I look forward to your "flawless execution" next time out!! Rest up and heal quickly!

I am obeying the "Know Thy Pace" rule... but I am referring to the pace at which I can read and respond... Sorry this is so late, Econorita...

I am glad the boomer chicks were there to prevent you from sinking into the gutter...reminds me of how I felt post-Omaha, 2005... I vaguely remember lying down on the concrete floor in that place where we finished...

I think you ran a very good time on 23 mpw. I like your lessons learned, though.

Congratulations on completing another marathon. What's next?
