This is the 4th year for this run and I am 1 of 2 people to do all of them. Usually this run is later in the year and we get the cross-country kids to show up, but this year it fell earlier in the year and thus the numbers were down. This year the race benefits a local family whose son has cerebal palsy, and every year they, the Student Council, pick a local family who is in need of financial help. I decided since the race started at 10:30 Saturday Morning that I would go ahead and get part of run in before the race. So when I got out of work I went home changed and went for a 5 mile run @47:30. I then drove to the High School and picked up my bib and got ready for the race. I wore Nike Spiridon racing shoes, light blue addidas shorts, and dark blue addidas sleeveless shirt. The race takes from the High School drive way to a side walk by a gas station to Mill St., aka Clio Rd., from here you run 3/8 of mile until you reach the Clio Park and bike path. We turned right down a steep hill or you could use the stairs, onto the bike path. You then follow the path for almost a mile west until you reach Jennings Rd. where you loop back to almost the our entry point into the park. From here we run up a hill similar to the one we ran down earlier and continue climbing some 120 feet or so over the next 1/4 mile. We turn right onto Bluff St. and sprint the next 1/4 mile to the finish at the Veteran's Park. My first mile started as usual, with me running to fast, actually leading the race until just prior to entering the Park. I messed up entering the park and went down the spiral stairs rather than down the grassy hill, and was passed by 2 more runners putting me 4th place overall. At about 3/4 mile another runner passed me, who I recognized as a runner who had beat me last year at this race. I gain on one of the other runners and pass him at 1 mile, 5:54, I told you I went to fast. The next mile I am able to hold my position until we make the turn around and aide station. We hit 2 miles at 13:45, the runner who I had passed, passes me again At this point I am within 40 yards of 2nd place a 12 year old boy and the the other 2 runners, first place is long gone. As we repeat the coarse I realize that their is no one behind me for almost 1/4 mile. I try to hang on to the pack but the heat and the 5 miles earlier are getting the better of me. I come out of the park and realize that I have a new PR if I maintain pace for the next 3/8's of a mile. I cross the finish line 22:18 5 th overall out 24 runners and 2 nd in my age group 40-49. Actually I was 3rd but the overall winner was likewise 48ish, and that 1 of the runners in my age group didn't get a medal. The pr beat my best time by 56 seconds and my last year time by 2:30 Run long run fast Marathon Derricck ------------------

Nice big whopping PR. I bet that good long warmup session helped the performance. Great job, especially on a course with spiral steps. Way to go.

Stairs in a 5k? Wow, that's new. Nice PR for your efforts! That first mile was fast... and that was with the stairs? Amazing...Second mile was 8 something? Interesting race... was that 12 year old named Walter?------------------ evanflein

Congtatulations on smashing your PR. I gotta wonder if you meant 6:54 for the first mile, though. Enjoy the hardware and the memories.------------------ Fortunate--a volleyballer with a running problem Profile

Great running! I thought with the warmup you were just out for a fun one --didn't think about you running away with the whole shootin match. Next time- a little more stair work and you'll clean up. Congrats on the PR. jjj

That race sounds sweet. Maybe we could have one where racers can slide down the banister. In October, there's a few longer trail races. E mail me if you want info.------------------ Have Fartlek - Will Travel, SteveP My User Profile

Derrick,Nice PR, but these splits are the craziest I have ever seen, especially for a middle-aged marathoner: 5:54 at 1 mile 13:45 at 2 miles 22:18 at 5K However, we live in an infinite universe, so I suppose it is possible that a runner exists who could run these splits.
