Short version: Not a PR effort, just a good day at the races with B&B buddies! The morning began most inauspiciously, as I rushed DH and DS (sick with a cold and sneezing uncontrollably) out of the hotel to get to the race on time. DH complied by speeding down the highway, and at one point flashing the headlights to get a car to move out of the left lane. But the race -- wow! See glidegal's RR for the description of a bucolic setting. Even the safety pins were cool (gold!). Over 100 random prizes stacked on a table....yeah, that's the ticket! That's why Labduck, MrsLabduck, Glidergal, Glideguy, and -- special bonus -- enkepfalin! showed up in this corner of Oregon when 47,000 other runners were in Portland for RFTC. heh heh (rubbing hands together). Feeling poorly, I took it easy in miles 1 and 2 and pushed hard in the last mile. I finally passed the walker guy who was cruising along at a 9 minute pace. I also passed a young woman in a Seattle marathon t-shirt, who turned out to be enke! Some excitement for me at the end because a bit of crunching noises on the gravel behind me alerted me that someone was trying to pass. ! I stepped on the gas and really charged into the finish line and held him off! heh! Mr. "Elusive" Econo didn't see my glorious finish, unfortunately, and didn't seem interested although I tried about 5 times to tell him about it (ah well). And he and "Little" Econo were pretty disgruntled that we didn't take home a new TV...but I did pick up 2 tickets to the Oregon Coast Aquarium; very cool. Upon closer inspection when we got home, I discovered that it was 2 envelopes! And the 2nd envelope had....2 more tickets in it! Almost forgot the fashion report: Grungy trail race tech t, black shorts, Nike Frees, hair swept up in a barrette, wrap-around sunglasses and...my new fashion weapon: White Compression Knee-High Socks! If they are good enough for my heroine Paula Radcliffe, they are certainly good for me: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4136018.stm#socks It was so fun to hang out with these B&B ne'er-do-wells, and enke, I look forward to seeing you at some of those Seattle area races! Thanks for the compliment!

Econo,Enjoyable race report as always, but it's cruel to give a fashion report and deny your fans some photos! No photos from glidegal either. This is indeed a Top Sekrit 5K. Good job holding off the guy at the end. I hope DS is feeling better. Dark Horse ------------------ I'm a dark horse, running on a dark race course

Sounds like you had a good time, even though you apparently didn't have what it takes to actually post your time. But hanging out with the other Boomers makes up for it I suppose. And I'm with the others: we need pics to understand what those socks are all about. ------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

Econo – now I get what you mean by cherry-picking races... A good day at the races with B&B buddies, and 4 Aquarium tickets to boot – well done! Especially since you were sick with a cold – what a trooper! Hope you’re feeling better soon. ------------------ Holly

Econo, the socks were indeed fashionable - tres magnifique! They also helped us to spot you 1/4 mile away...Your finishing effort was awesome. I thought that guy was definitely going to pass you at the end, but you held him off and "chicked" him in the process. Hee hee, nice going!

I need a pair for my upcoming race.I am so glad to hear that this B&B get together once again proofed to be fun and filled with adventures. Enjoy the free tickets to the aquarium... and enjoy the "taper madness"

mari, I got them from an internet medical supply store. I googled "athletic compression socks" and found them. Kinda cute in an early '70's way (oh, but DS was horrified!).

Econo: the socks are great and it made it easier to spot you when you were on the way back from the turnaround and I was still headed the other direction. See you in a couple of weeks!

Yes, yes! La T has the idea. Put those socks on over your tie-dye tights and let the swooning begin!"Feeling poorly"? Rest aplenty, Soul Sis. We have a date in a couple weeks and you need to be hearty and hale.

Hi Econo!!It was greta meeting you and the other Boomers! I didn't know they would be there. Not much I can add to your race report and glidegal's. Note to other Boomers: Yes Econo passed me at one point, and I saw her crazy socks and her Nike frees which in black look more like a pair of Van's, and I thought to myself, gee that really looks like Econo, but gosh, doesn't she run sub 8 minute/mile 5K's?, nope, this lady is too slow, and with the Van's on, double nope, can't be her. So it turns out it was her, and she had decided not to race this one. Thanks for the compliment, "young" woman. We will be in the same age group in 16 months! Thanks for giving me your extra T-shirt too!! And that prize you won?? It turns out my friends that hosted me in Portland Saturday night are going to the Aquarium next week! I was really hoping I could win something to leave with them to pay them back for their hospitality. So obviously they called out the wrong bib number on that one! This race rocks!! Buocolic setting, Boomerpalooza, Bumper Crop of Raffle prizes. It was perfect!! And worth every minute of the 3 hour drive from Seattle. But let's keep it a secret Looking forward to meeting you again! Enke.

That guy coming up on you had no idea what he was in for. I can just picture you holding him off. But those socks? They will take some getting used to. I'm sorry you and your family didn't feel well, but of course you had fun anyway.------------------ My Profile

Knee highs? Trying to move up a few age groups? Glad you made it to the race one time and safely. That's a great finish and a great Boomer meetup. Sounds like fun.

Hey-- don't give Econo grief about those socks. I've been lookin for a knee high pair with wide red bands for years. If you run across any let me know.Sorry, you were feeling poorly, guess I dodged a bullet in our little virtual 5k competition. And sorry about the TV thing, but fish are nice too. but this quote: DH complied by speeding down the highway, and at one point flashing the headlights to get a car to move out of the left lane.
reminds me of someone---I just can't think who....anyways. sounded like a great time. nice running, jjj

Love these races with prizes! Nice run, even with a code. Hmmm, tie dyed compression socks. That WOULD be fun! I wonder if these would help the swelling I get on long plane trips? Takes me a day to see my ankles again... Good job holding off the late stage advance!------------------ evanflein

Sounds like the PNW group had another great time, which is probably why I signed up yesterday for the '08 HTC. I refuse to let others have all the good times. Nike Frees huh? Man Econo, you are fast. Spareribs

Wish I could have been there - you Oregon runners are making me homesick. I don't know which highway you were driving down, but I'm not sure I'd want to go too fast on some of those roads up in that part of the state. After seeing you at Scandia and visiting my folks, we actually went up through that part of the state on our way to a trip around the Olympic Peninsula. We got lost coming out of Forest Grove, though, and had an interesting time going through back-country gravel roads before winding up at Tillamook (we were aiming for Astoria). Never actually made it to Banks, although I think we saw a sign saying we were within 10 miles of it.
