My overly confident goal for this, my 2nd, ˝ Marathon was a 2:15. If I ended at 2:20, I could live with it, but just finishing was an accomplishment in itself. When I got to the Brewery I found my neighbor Ashley, who just started running this year. She’s a young 20 something, slim, athletic and fast. She said she was aiming for 10-minute miles, so I figured I could hang with her for at least the 1st half. When we got to the starting line, I went to turn on my Ipod and it froze on me. Oh, oh . . . this is not a good sign. So I had to wear the blasted thing, with nothing but silence to listen to. 1st mile – 9:13 – another oh, oh . . . this is too fast for me. 2nd mile – 9:41 after tackling the biggest hill – still too fast The weather is warming up fast and I can already feel that this is not going to be my day. My Doctor passed me in the first mile and gave me a wave of recognition. By the 3rd mile I’m already taking little walk breaks – something I hardly ever do – except when the temps are too warm for me. Miles 3 through 6 I’m keeping it around 10:30 pace and finished 6 just at 1:01:50. I’m thinking if I can keep this up I can maybe make my goal. About mile 8 my neck starts aching and my back is hurting a bit too – I start walking more. Skip ahead to mile 13 – finish time of 2:21:45 – not bad considering all the strolling I was doing. MrHopeful was at the finish line to cheer me on along with my daughter, neighbor and my Doctor!! He hung around just to see me finish! I thought that was really nice of him. All the ˝ finishers got a pilsner glass with the logo and “finisher” etched into it. I finished 6th in my age group. My neighbor got 2nd in her age group – and was so tickled to have won something. I’ll definitely do this again next year - I just wish they’d start it earlier than 10 a.m. My neighbor and I breaking in out pilsner glasses. Thanks for reading!! Cheers! ~Mary

Congratulations, Mary! But I agree that 10AM is late for starting a HM. If you had similar weather to ours, it was nice and cool at 8AM this morning when our bike event started, but by 10AM it was warming up pretty quickly. But in any case, 6th place and a 2:21 is something that any Boomer should be proud of. I'm sure you'll meet your goal in your next event (how about Grand Rapids next month?). ------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

Thanks ya'll!! I forgot to mention my fashion report. MSU spartan green and white with a MSU visor - seemd to do the trick for them this afternoon. Doug - I'm actually toying with the GR half, but not ready to commit to it yet. I know I've got a better run/time in me! ~Mary

You are so much fun Mary. Next time let's see a photo of a little quick step dance routine. The group is waiting for the video of that. You always have a great time and love your upbeat report. Nice going. Spareribs

Hey Mary- You did a half for the second time! That is an accomplishment in itself. I agree, in heat, 10am is too late to start. Got some of those beer glasses in my cabinet..they look much nicer with some cold beer in them. You deserved it! Rest today! Cheers, Michelle

great job, mary, and fun RR. my ipod also froze at the start of my HM last week, but after it did that at my first HM last may i went to the apple store to complain - there is a way to reset it (mine is a nano) by holding down the top button and the center button and then it works just fine. rest up and enjoy now! ------------------ susan

Mary You really don't look like you have just ran a HM in the heat in that piccie. Well done on getting number 2 HM under your belt. I don't do heat very well at all so I know how you feel. Roll on the autumn (fall), lets have some nice cooooooooler running weather!

I know what you mean about the heat - I melted in a 10K in June, and had to take walk breaks, which I definitely hadn't planned on. Oh, well, you did great despite the heat, and a beer glass is a much more useful prize than a medal!

I bet the organizers want the later start so everyone is ready for a barley sammich at noon. Congrats on the 6th place and to your neighbour on 2nd AG. Great pic, Mary. Looks like you're enjoying your new glass.

Mary,I'm late to the game as usual, but I wanted to say, Great Racing! We all know that heat can really sap your strength, but you did really well in spite of that. I love the picture. ------------------ Holly
