when fjorddaughter asked me to do the seattle iron girl 5k again, i could hardly say no, though this time she wanted to race individually, not as a mother/daughter team, and for me, it was only one week before the lake chelan HM, so i decided to treat it as a "speed workout". last year was the first race either of us ever entered, and i wondered if i could even finish the race with a time that looked like running; i managed 38 something. a few weeks later i ran 36.10 at the pumpkin push. so this year i was hoping to come in under 36; most of my (hilly) training runs have been in the 13 region, so that would be a nice improvement, but not wear me out for next week's HM. when it was time to line up i intended to fall back to the 12 minute pace and asked fjorddaughter, who was hoping to break 30 minutes (last year she did 33 and change) if she intended to line up with the 10 minute pace group, but she suggested we both stay with the 11 minute group. i figured i was pushing my luck, but it turned out to be just right. it was indeed crowded at the start, and i followed fjorddaughter for a short while, but her golden pony tail soon disappeared in the crowd and i was on my own. i probably broke someone's rules and used my ipod set to dj steveboy's 160 bpm music (much faster than i've ever used in training) and decided to just "lock in to the beat" - which is how i've brought myself home from the last 2 or 3 miles during every exhausting 10-13 mile long run (though using slower music). according to the technical device on my wrist, it was keeping me in the 10 something pace, which amazed me, and i managed to keep it going the entire 3 miles. my big mistake was stopping at the drink table; i probably should have worn my camelbak like i do during training, and would have cut my time a bit. instead, i pushed a little harder downhill to make up time. meanwhile, no grandmas passed me pushing strollers like last year, nor was i amidst the pack of whining daughters wishing they had never heard of the iron girl, like last year. instead, i saw no one my age around me (a few mothers with strollers did pass me, but they were half my age and obviously...er... runners . i even occasionally passed other runners. amazing! the course was slightly different this year, and at the end we were led up a slight hill - not the type of place where you want to put on steam - and then turned down the final stretch. i was thrilled to see the 33 minutes on the board, and even more thrilled when i saw 32 something on my wrist. i was indeed wiped when i came in though not as "sick" as i felt after both the HM in may and last year's race. i was holding back for next week. fjorddaughter found me as soon as i crossed, she had come in just 2 or 3 minutes ahead of me. she saw 30 something on the board, so we knew she was close to her goal of 29; it turned out to be 29.55 - hooray! for me, 32.46 was the final time - 349/775 overall, and 7/29 in the AG (last year my time was good enough for AG hardware, but there were some speedy women this year). according to the technical device on my wrist, my miles were 10.28 (crowded), 10.41 (water table), and 10.27 (does that make it negative split?) plus a little change for forgetting to push the start and stop buttons in the right places. like last year, the breakfast buffet was amazing, with white tablecloths on tables in the sunshine. temperature was also perfect for running - it was 52 when we left fjorddaughter's apartment, and 62 when we headed home. and fjorddaughter said, let's do it again next year! and we probably will ------------------ susan [This message has been edited by fjordrunner (edited Sep-10-2007).]

Glad you had a great time. Next year, lets meet! I was vaguely looking out for someone with your name on their bib, but I saw no one with that name. That final stretch up the hill, past the finish line, before coming down the shoot. It was an unpleasant way to route the course! I actually found the temperature too hot. I would much rather run in 40 or 50 than 60F. The sun was angled right into our faces during some stretches eh? I think it was more competitive this year. I didn't move up much in percentile even though I shaved off 3 minutes. Now that the news about this race is out, all the speedsters are signing up. Did you note that woman in the 70-74 age group that ran the 5 K in 27:28? There was quite a bit of clapping for her during the awards presentation. Congrats to your daughter too! You both did a supreme job!

I actually found the temperature too hot. I would much rather run in 40 or 50 than 60F. The sun was angled right into our faces during some stretches eh? since i've been home in the methow i've had to run in 70s and even 80s (not 90s, i refuse!), so it felt pretty good to us, though i agree that 40s and 50s would be better. i remembered to bring my running hat, so it did a good job of keeping the sun out of my eyes. i remembered that from last year! Did you note that woman in the 70-74 age group that ran the 5 K in 27:28? There was quite a bit of clapping for her during the awards presentation. wow! i'd missed that - we left early, because we had the long drive back to the methow ahead of us. i want to be like her when i grow up! Congrats to your daughter too! You both did a supreme job!
thank you and congrats to you too! next year we definitely have to meet up! ------------------ susan

Terrific race, Susan, and very nice RR! Just to race with a daughter that wants to race with you, is reward enough. Way to go! Very nice time too! Continued good running. PJ

I was thinking of your also crowded Goteborgsvarvete Half in May when my morning run got me to Green Lake at the aquatheatre about a mile down the lake from the Ryka start this year.Even though it was almost a half hour after the starting gun, the bike path was still so jammed with walkers and jogger-walkers that I could pass only with difficulty even then so your big PR this year is even more impressive. Have fun pretty much on your own without all the congestion at next week's Lake Chelan half.

econo, no daughters are necessary - you actually can run this signed up on your own, and it is well worth it for the all-women atmosphere and the great breakfast afterwards. maybe we'll see you there next year?! ------------------ susan

Best of luck in your half marathon. I'll look forward to another enjoyable RR.
thank you, and everyone, for the kind words - watch this space next weekend....

it didn't feel so crowded compared with the HM last may, but 1500 is nowhere near 30,000, plus streets lined thick with spectators, so that could explain it. i didn't find it too difficult to pass along the edges when i needed to, and in some places even chose to run on the gravel or grass to vary the underlägg...er... surface. wish we'd made arrangements to meet up again, tet! ------------------ susan

Susan – what a lovely race - getting to run with your daughter and then both of you meeting your goals. Isn’t it exciting watching yourself improve with each race, seeing what you are capable of? I’m looking forward reading about your HM. Great race and report!------------------ Holly
