Do you ever wish local race organizers would get together and better plan/negotiate the local race schedule and not pile up a bunch of events on the same weekend? Certainly in Toronto, where they will be trying to run two large marathons/half marathons two weeks apart is a case in point. And in Ottawa this past weekend, the traditional runners association fall half marathon and 5k, was left to compete with a 10 k on the Saturday and a couple of charity run/walks on the Sunday (along with the Montreal Marathon just down the road). It is too bad, because this is a great race, with a nice double loop course, well-organized, traditionally great weather, and almost as many draw prizes as competitors (I won a pair of running shorts, woo hoo!!!). There were under 200 runners in the half and about 60 runners in the 5 k.Any hoo, I was hoping to run 1:30 (to get an automatic entry into next year's New York marathon) and ran 1:32 (had broken 1:30 the last two years). Weather was perfect, and little bit of wind. Relatively flat course with one real up hill that you had to tackle twice. Unfortunately, it wasn't my day. Credit some inconsistent training over the last two weeks for the difference. Also this is a B race for me, so not sure my focus was really there. As a bonus, I think I saw Tall just before the start. I am sure it was him, because I felt this sudden eclipse and when I looked up, way up ala the Friendly Giant, I saw the bandana. Unfortunately, the gun went off, so I never did get to say hello. He was running the 5k (I think under an assumed name). I think he finished 4th. And he wasn't around when I was done my run so we never did meet. So although we live in the same city, he will remain the legend that is Tall. Next up for me is pacing the Toronto Scotia at the end of the month, need to find a fast half mary to run under 1:30, and a late fall fast marathon (later two goals may be a challenge and/or a recipe for injury) ------------------ The longest journey starts with a single step

Sorry you missed your goal, but 1:32 is still a great time. Congratulations. Ribs will be all over you for using the half mary term. Expect heavy fines. Tom

You almost got that 1:30 on an off day, spankee, and 1:32 sounds mighty fast to me. Congrats on your race. It's neat you think you saw Tall. TomS ------------------ My Profile

SpankeeSorry we missed each other. Sorry about you missing your goal, so close. I am running the PEC half on October 14th. Here it's a good PR course or you could run the half at Fall Colors more hills though. Sportstats messed up my last name (I would never run under another name) but I did come in 4OA..I have asked Sportstats to correct my name. Take care Tall

Coupy is a very respectable nom de plum. I'd keep it as a back-up. Was thinking about doing PEC. Have done the marathon there the last two years. Besides being close to some interesting wineries, it is a well organized, friendly, country marathon and half marathon. Flying start half marathon. Quite flat with only two hills--not a problem in the half, bit more of a challenge because of their location near the end in the marathon.

Great run, Spankee! Maybe we'll see you at the Scotia. I'm in for the full. I have a friend who runs the PEC every year. His mother lives in the area. He tries to entice us to run every year by saying that his mother will bake apple pies if we come. Timing is everything! PJ

Good luck on the meet-up, Ontarians!Spankee, I hear you on the too-many-good-races-on-the-same-day whine. October 7th on this coast is a case in point. Well, as you say, this was a B race. Refocus and you'll get under that 1:30. I like your sekrit Canook reference to the Friendly Giant. I always loved Jerome and Rusty. And that hip band of jazzy kitties! And the cow jumped over the moon ...
