Hopkinton Sweet 16 Sprint (Toddler) Tri –

digest: .25/12.5/3.1 time=1:09. 3rd in AG.

Where this name comes from, I do not know. There were no 16 yo’s to be found.

Got up about 6, coffee, banana, yogurt. Hopkinton is all of 10 min away, so easy drive, good parking space, etc.

Pre race was fun. It’s amazing how having some extra time relieves all the pressure. Went looking and found, LeftRightRepeat and Gatorgirl, Sheldon’s sister, Thor, Orapin, Deirdre and Mark (and Mark’s wife), from work, a bunch of the tri team’s members, and a few pool members.

My wave is second to last (typical). They were gonna have a run from the beach start, but, due to low water levels rocks were too close to the surface for safety. So water start. I stood on one of those rocks and was only knee deep, when the gun went off. Fun to dive in for the start. Mediocre swim. 10m for a 1/4 mile. I’ll take it.

Slow T1. I do not have times. I constantly forget to hit split. Toe clips on the bike for a short ride. So running shoes, no socks, yanx laces.

Bike: I begin to pass people straight away. Pretty good bike. The first big turn I almost blow it. Waaaay too fast. I am hopping on both brakes. The bike is shaking. I go around the right hand turn swinging into the oncoming traffic lane. They are not shut down, but no oncoming cars. Lucky me. Seriously, if there were, I would have been off the road to the left (or worse). I pass a ton of riders, and do not get passed by even one.

T2: Cool. The running shoes are on. I drop the bike, the helmet. And run out. I gained 20 places I am sure.

Run: A good start. Within 50 yds I pass an age grouper. I do not even stalk hi, just blow by. At about 1M I get a ..side stitch! Gimme a break! I slow from sub 7 to 7:30 or so (just guessing). The first half of the run is mostly uphill, but not bad. At a turn around I my buddy age grouper is merely 20 or 50 feet back! HS! I am running scared now. The remainder is mainly downhill, and I am a downhill runner. The side stitch is more manageable, and I feel a bit better. Within a 1/2M of the finish, a great guy who is an AG above me (and started with me), passes. I have to hand it to him. My only “got passed” since exiting the water. He won his age group.

A fun time after. I just rotated from imaginary friends, to tri group friends, to swim club friends, to cute volunteers who should have been racing but were doing their part.

All in all a fun day. And some great cell phone calls after.

OKOKOK, now back to running. Hartford is 5 weeks out. Then a winter of running, swimming, and gag, trainer biking.

Thanks all!!!!
Craig

Sounds like you had a great race, besides the side stitch thing. Nice 3rd AG win!

Yikes - only 5 weeks out until Hartford?

Smart move using the running shoes and clips on the bike -- that really helped T2.

Nice race.

See you in Hartford...

Congrats on a well done race!! Other than that pesky stitch, it sounds like you were on top of your game. I also take it that the running shoes on the bike was worth it for the second transition savings!

Nice report too!
(Were the imaginary friends from getting kicked in the head during the swim?)

Cool report. Now that I've been forced to bike and swim instead of running, the occasional thought of a triathlon pops in my head. I learned a lot from this Craig, thanks for the info. Oh, and you must be one wickedly awesome bicyclist!

Waitaminute. The swim was only a quarter mile long! What kind of a wussy triathon is that? Even I, She Who Swims With Glacial Speed, have never seen a triathlon with a "swim" that short.

Grudging compliment on the rest, however.

Craig, congrats. Don't let Econo trim your sails. 1/4 mile is a traditional sprint. The 2 I've done felt like I was crossing the English Channel. See you in Hartford.

If there were 16 year olds to distract you, you wouldn't have gotten the AG award. Nice going!

Don't like the part about the right-hand turn into oncoming traffic. Geez, Pro. Everything else ... niiiice.

I'd have called too ... if I had a cellphone.

Yes, yes. Get back to running. Hartford is nigh!

Way to go Pro on your AG award. I admit I know nothing about these tri things, but the report made it sound like fun. Close call there with the turn into traffic. Good luck at Hartford

No 16 year olds, but what a coincidence the total distance was 16 miles, huh.
No socks? But were you wearing lots of tight spandex? Any shirt? Will there be photos?

Great job, I love how you pass everyone on the bike and on the run! Congratulations on the hardware too.

Great job Craig!

Tell that hussy Econo, that we have reverse sprint tri's down here with 150 meter swims in heated pools.

Econo, I need to expand my vocabulary. If you swim and glacial speed, and I swim more slowly than you, what do you call my speed?

Btw, your slowing down to 7 and half minute miles is about my top end. I have only had 2 miles under 7 minutes and 7 and a half is pretty darn good by my standards.

There were a few 16 year-olds before you arrived...

I hear you on that first right-hander. You left out that the roads (and probably our brakes) were wet as well which made that turn negotiation all the more tricky.

You got me by 4 seconds on the swim, 2:30 on the run, and 1:30 in the T's. I got you by 30 seconds or so the bike, but I bow to your superior finish time!! When I saw you on the run turn-around, I had a few fantasy moments where I figured I was killing you!! They quickly faded as I realized I'd started 6 minutes before you and you were significantly less than that behind me. Congrats on your AG podium finish!

My report here. It was a fun day!!!

Hey, that sounds like fun, except for the part where you almost wiped out. You were really flying -- that's about 25mph on the bike and a heckuva 5k time. A well deserved AG placing.

Excellent Tri Pro and LRR,

That swimming is tricky business, but gag trainer biking sounds even scarier.

Congratulations on a well run tri.

Look out Hartford!
