There's not much to add to the two Pauls' report, but I'll give it a shot. Fashion report: yellow ribbon hat, light blue sleeveless technical shirt, standard dark blue Nike shorts, blue Asics GT-2080's. This was my first 10k, so I developed a plan, if you remember from the other day-to start at 10's and pick it up after about a minute. The problem was, I had no idea what pace I was really running at, and the way virtually everyone shot out past me at the start, I really thought I was on pace. Paul told me later I went out too fast, so I learned a valuable lesson. I was right behind him for a while, and now that I know his time, I can see that was too fast. I also developed a sour stomach, then dry heaves, going up that hill, maybe from the double-strength Gatorade at the aid station right before that, so I also learned another valuable lesson-carry my own drink like I do in marathons.

I don't know my splits, but I know the first few were about 5:00/k instead of 5:30, then the last couple were too slow. I didn't make my goal but I had a respectable finish time, and after I stretched a very tight left hammy, at the awards ceremony, I felt like I was with a couple of celebrities. My pace was a little faster than at the Missoula half this summer, so this was about a tempo run pace, as the title of the report suggests. However, my heart rate shot up higher than a tempo run, maybe due to the H&H. Average was 175, max 181. Even after a nap this afternoon, I felt drained and got a headache, so I guess it was a little more intense than a tempo run. No worries, after a couple of ibuprofen I feel great.

A footnote about relays. If any Boomer goddess wants to join our Sonic Boomers team, we might have an opening. It's the open or coed division. Paul and I have decided to run the Ft. Worth Cowtown Marathon relay again in February.

Any race where you can learn some lessons is a good race. The dry heaves sound pretty bad, Karl. "embrace the puke" was probably not a welcome mantra eh?

Congratulations on your PR, Karl!

Tammy, I just got a nice little consolation prize when I looked at your profile and figured something out. You beat me today but I beat you at the half. Your presence today was hard to escape. I forgot one little detail: I reeled in a Boomer goddess with great legs. I found out she was in my age group because she got an award.

ETA-official time on my profile now-pretty sneaky, huh?

I just looked at your profile again also Karl and you and I really are so evenly matched in almost all our distances. I think our 5 mile is about the same and pretty close on the 10 mile also. Of course there are so many variables like course terrain, etc. that play into times, but overall I think you and I run about the same. I'll be doing my 2nd half marathon in about 6 wks, so I'm hoping to improve on my time. congrats again on a nice race today Karl!

Ouch, Karl! Dry heaves --
Where is your time? Why is this all in K's? I'm feeling kind of metricphobic, I guess... And the headache -- dehydration-related?

Ugh...dry heaves mid-race... and you finished? I don't think I could have mustered that. I've had dry heaves at the finish line, but it seems to be triggered more by exercise-induced asthma than anything else. Once I catch my breath, I'm fine. If it happened mid-race, I don't see being able to get myself together the way you did! Bravo!

I was overconfident and shouldn't have blurted out my goal time beforehand. My time was about 3 minutes slower than my goal, based on clock time, or 2 minutes based on my watch time. I used k's because that's how the course was marked. After the race, I hydrated well, including a beer when I got home.
Thanks for all the support. I couldn't do it without you guys.

Ks are good! Branch out, people!

K/Opie, way to tough it out. Dry heaves = no fun. Bleah.

A "respectable time" should carry you through nicely to Bellingham! Be confident!

That sounded like a tough one Karl.
AHR 175 for 49.7 furlongs is a HARD tempo run in my book.
way to hang in there.

Ok souci is that branchy enough.

Hey Opie, way to hang tough to the end. I think the first attempt at any distance is an education, and you extracted some good lessons from the experience.

Good job for hanging tough in some not so good conditions there Opester, battling back after some gastric issues. But seriously there Karl, I thought an old pro like you would know not to take untested sports drink at a race, or did they not have water available ??

Good luck in Bellingham

John

Dry heaves can be a good ab work out, but not during a race. Yuck. In a number of places, I've seen yself in your RR. Been there. Thanks for the RR and the trip down memory lane.

the new double-strength Gatorade is a blessing in marathons and ultras but not necessary at all in a 10K, especially at a speedy 5m/k pace.

We used to have a 10K here too in the way more conveniently frequent K-markings making it so much easier to stay on pace and be aware of progress through the course. I got used to the K's in sfch country and still love them but the Royal Victoria Marathon is the only event within striking distance with 'em nowdays.

Hope your belly will be better at the Belly.

Congrats, Karl! You ran a tough race and learned a lot ... and you ran a new distance. I think I could probably handle the double-strength Gatorade. It's the watered-down stuff that I have a hard time with ... just tastes awful. Continued good running and racing!

I don't think I've ever run a race where it was marked in K's instead of miles. I would find that extremely disconcerting. Sorry you felt rather ill on this one. Since it was your first one, now you have a benchmark. I predict the next one will go much better.

Way to hang in there and finish, Opie

Karl – my pace at a race last March was so far off from what I thought it was, that’s what made me decide to get a Garmin. Not that the Garmin is exact, but I have found that my own perception of pace is not to be relied on at all in races. You really gutted it out, dry heaves and all – how can I call you Opie when you’re so tough? Great job!
