Ok, I am generally not the one to sound the alarm. When the power goes out, I never call. I know there scads of people freakin' out and dialing as fast as their little fingers will go. Why should I bother? But what the heck is up with kickrunners and hacking? It's like they are the target and bullseye of rookie hackers. Is there a key to hack their site? Sounds like fun, clue me in. Anyway, they are hacked again. Sat evening. Watch and have fun. Or..... -CRaig

It looks to me like they use open-source forum software called "phpBB", which is pretty widely used. I set up a forum once using that product and it ended up getting hacked once. The developers come out with updates to fix the problems, but maybe someone has figured a way in again. This forum, on the other hand, seems to use a one-off implementation since I've never seen another forum that looks or works like this one. So that actually makes it safer! ------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

What is even funnier about that forum is the "Post Nazi" guy Rich (ala "soup nazi" from Seinfeld) who controls the posts. I went over there today just to read his bizarre and defensive remarks. Man, are we lucky we have hup and hally. He moves stuff around and gets grouchy when anyone complains. You have to go read some of the stuff he says. I swear if anyone complains again he is going to burst into tears. "No no, you guys go ahead and post anything you like; it's your forum, I just move your posts and threads around as I see fit." What an *sshole he is. Spareribs

Not related to the hacking, but to the Kick site.Moving and merging several of the Masters threads was a bit heavy handed. After some clarification, I think Rich is okay with a Masters-only daily thread of the sort that exists here. Race reports seem to be more of a sticking point, but there is an easy compromise which has worked on the other Kick forums. We still don't know what will become of CR when the Active assimilation goes through, but if there is an exodus, Kick may be where many or most of us land. It is each person's choice whether to use or avoid the site, but personal attacks don't help anyone. $0.02 please.

How did you start any thread? I can't even get on there. I wanted to see if Rich responded to my snarky post. He'd prefer if we just private message him, so everyone else won't see that we're all in agreement, but I decided to post publicly instead.

good evening - it's rich - the, what do you call me? Post Nazi??? - no wait, it was *sshole??? Post Nazi and *ashole for what? For just trying to do something nice for some friends.. thats all....we're a small site just minding my own business... Not a computer guy - hell, I sell air conditioners.. yet, you come to a forum that - cost you, what? and then come over here and piss on me because I MOVED a few threads? Didn't delete them, didn't edit them, just moved them to an area where every other member knows and understands how the place is set up in OUR forum...
Instead of taking the time to figure out how things are done and attempting to work within the guidelines set up - you'd rather just piss in my pool and come back over here and then gloat about it... Or even inviting me over here to see what you guys have and what you're used to.. So, at least I'd understand what you guys do - and then I would have had a better understanding..nah - it's easier to just piss and leave.. that's ok.. your life your world if thats what makes you happy, good for you... Yup - we're getting hacked alot.. and yup.. I'm spending hours and hours trying to figure out why - the software wasn't free and its not open source - it was supposed to be the most reputable for what we're doing, but then you don't really care about any of that.. anyway...since you chose to bring it over here instead of pm'g me to discuss why? oh, right - because you think that's how I manipulate so others won't know you all agree???
Here's the thing.. Yeah - in retrospect, I shouldn't have moved the posts, but probably should have reminded you of what we're looking to do.. but I didn't.. my bad.... but you know - coming over hear and pretty much *itchslapping me and not being adult enough to work with me on it - isn't the BEST way to initiate change over there? (at least not the change you'd like)... Anyway - TIme to go back and finish trying to figure out how my sites getting hacked by people - who do this much more and a helluva alot better than I, but what the hell, it's just hours of my time for a site that cost you nothing...
best regards rich aka post nazi - ^sshole

I'm cross posting this here and http://www.kickrunners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10766 so everyone can see it. Rich is devoting his time to the KR site, and working very hard to deal with the hacking. Regarding the rules of the site, I think that will all get worked out in the long run... quote: Originally posted by delreds:Yup - we're getting hacked alot.. and yup.. Rich - You're right. Let's start over. As a webmaster for another forum I do understand that what you are doing is giving your time so that others may benefit. This hacking stuff isn't what you signed up for I'm sure, and is a hugh pain in the butt for us but especially for you. That you are dealing with it is much appreciated and I hope you figure out how to lock this site down. I hope and believe this is going to be a great place for all of us, and that we'll find some equillibrium which we all can happily live with. Sorry we got off on the wrong foot. Lou

Rich,Please accept our apologies for Lou (WillRunforBeer). We all know Lou is an abrasive guy, but I believe at heart he means well. Personally I blame his egregious behavior on the excessive amount of beer he consumes. Maybe it's time for an intervention. I'm an equal oppurtunity poster I am posting everything everwhere. I like the kick site because it is a little smaller and seems to be what kick and coolrunners was at about the time of the merge. The idea of becoming part of the active conglomerate bugs me. Good luck with the hacker problem Rich

Uh, Rich -- just so you know, Dark Horse has been trying to get rid of me for personal reasons I don't want to mention.

Rich, Like some of the others, I started posting over at your site when the spectre of the active takeover reared it's head here. You've put together a great site, it's easy to manuever around, and has a lot of cool features. Being very "low tech" myself, I don't have much understanding of what it takes to operate a site like yours, but certainly appreciate all you do to maintain it and keep it operational, especially with this hacking going on now. Speaking for myself only, I'm a little more comfortable with the setup we have here, i.e., one forum with many varied posts ranging from marathon PR race reports to birth of grandkids, pictures of cars, recipe sharing, whatever. As a 56 yo newb runner, I feel more at home with some of my own, so please accept my apology for any smart ass, snarky, "Johnny don't do rules" comments I've made over at your place. As Road Hawk says, I'm also a cross poster. I favor the little guy and don't want to be a part of a big conglomerate. In the words of that noted peace activist from last century, Rodney King, "People, let's just try to get along" Keep up the good work, Rich, and sorry about any misunderstanding. John2635 AKA Johnny

Rich - thanks for coming over here and venting. Perhaps it'll give everyone a better understanding of where you are coming from but also gives you a better understanding of how we like to post and with whom we like to post. As I've said on your site (I'm Tamster, but you can probably figure that out), I think posting our RR's on a separate forum, with the link or sticky thread on the Master's forum, will work out fine. Keeping our daily thread amongst ourselves with our runs, our chats, our hottub party invites (by the way, when you done fixing all this hacking business, can you get me a hottub smiley to use , etc. is probably what will work best for us. As a 40+ runner, I want to hang out mostly with other 40+ runners. In real life I wouldn't go hang out with 20-something year olds - even if they were all runners. Just not where my interest lies. I'd rather be around older runners - just like in real life my friends are in my age bracket or older. thanks again Rich for all the time you are devoting to keeping your site in tact. I know it's a major headache for you and not something you want to keep doing day after day. It'll all get worked out. ------------------ Tamalina

Rich- Belated thanks for all you've done over at Kick. It was very generous of you to allow us all to post freely and it was exceptional the way you created our own 'place'/forum.Many thanks. I hope you realize that much of what is 'said' here is in jest. spareribs is a standup guy and I'd believe that his comments were more in jest than serious. I was bothered by the 'moving' of threads because I like my race reports where my peeps are. I don't post them in the 'race reports' section here at CR either, because it's a different crowd. Hopefully you will get this hacker out of the way. It (hacking) is way over my head and I feel badly that it's happening. I'm grateful for the time that you've put into your site and want to say thanks again. Dale edited to add: at least I hope these were in jest, not malicious... I only have a tiny bit of experience. where I work the website was hacked, but 'we' were our own servers. I hadn't set it up & didn't know anything about it, but did manage to get them off. I wonder what server they are running? I don't even know enough to know if that applies for the big guys. but it was interesting, you could look at the iis logs & see all the successful & unsuccessful attempts at entry. I wonder that too, criga, what is the point of entry in this case. [This message has been edited by dg9 (edited Sep-10-2007).]

I hope you're right about this Dale, because his post sure appears serious to me. I will say it does seem to be out of character for Spareribs. Rich, we all appreciate your efforts and the current headache you're having with the hacker issue. It's a tough situation. With that being said, the tone used in your post is not really called for either. Please, a little more honey, a little less vinegar...
