Harvest Festival 5K and 10K, Talent, OR. Weather: not a cloud in the sky, cool temps (maybe mid 50's?) perfect running weather. I ran the 5K race of this event last year and decided this time to do the 10K, since I had never raced this distance before. The RD described the 5K as a nice flat out and back and the 10K as "challenging and hilly". I didn't drive this course first so really had no idea what exactly they meant by hilly. Both races started out on the same course for the first 1 or so. The 10K was a loop course with one small portion that was an out and back. It was such a scenic course as it wound around various pear orchards and you had fantastic views of the mountains and foothills. This is such a beautiful part of the country we live in and I felt real fortunate to have some of these orchard lined roads to ourselves. Gotta back up for a minute - I'm getting ahead of myself. John and I met at a parking lot in GP and we ride shared down. Thanks for driving John. Not having to drive allowed me time to focus on getting psyched for the race. We arrived about 45 min prior to the scheduled start which gave us time to get our numbers and warm up. John ran the 5K so wanted to do more of a warm-up then I did. I only warmed up for about 5 min, so probably just a 1/2 mile or so. The race was not real well organized and we got a late start by about 10 or so minutes I think. They had a bigger turn-out then they've had in past years so not sure if this was the reason or not. It wasn't a big deal to me though. Linda and her daughter showed up just prior to the start so we chatted for a bit before it was time to line up. ok - now the race will start. The first mile was pretty bunched up so it took awhile to spread out. Here's my splits: mile 1: 9.01 mile 2: 8.29 (nice gradual downhill here!) mile 3: 10.10 (whoa! where did these hills come from! kicked my butt!) mile 4: 9.09 (more rolling hills, but pretty easy) mile 5: 9.34 (this was actually a fairly flat part, so not sure why I was so slow here?) and the final 1.2 miles: 8.52 (i booked it here and my goal was the pass the female runner that I had been lagging behind for at least a 1/2 mile during almost the entire race) final time: 55:17. sekritly I was hoping for a sub 55, but for my first 10K and on a hilly course like this I was pleased to be in the 55 min range. I'll take it. John and Linda were there at the end to cheer me over the finish line. During my last mile, I was hoping that John would have ran the course to find me and pace me in, but I just used "lady in the light blue shorts" as my target to try and overtake her. Once I caught up and passed her, she sped up and tried passing me, but whenever she got within a stride of me, I used my much longer leg stride to give me the space I needed to cross before her. Award time came and I was busy chatting with another runner that is real competitive at all these local races. I guess they called my name for 1st AG group (40-49) but didn't hear it til either John or Linda told me to get up and get my ribbon! So, I placed 1st in my AG (and yes, there was more than one in my AG ) and even won a door prize of $10 at the local coffee house, so afterwards John was kind enough to make a stop so I could get my coffee and bagel. Fashion Report: Black Triks running skirt, light pink underarmour shirt, white and pink "hope" running cap, Asics running shoes. And then I got to wear the race tshirt home because John was kind enough to give me the one he paid for as part of his registration. Thanks buddy! It was a good day at the races! ------------------ Tamalina

I'm not sure I get you getting John's t-shirt but you would have gotten mine too in this one like you got my 5K t-shirt in June (when your summer's 5K was more than a minute faster than mine) because my July 10K was way more than a minute slower than your splendid 55. What a memorable 10K'er, . . . and with John and Linda too. I can only hope that the wind comes sweepin' down the plain and propels opie to a sub-55 and so he can get the shirt right back off your back to bring to belly or I'll never see one. ETA - I love how you filled the HUGE GAPING HOLE in the 10K category in your profile, . . . and everything else about it too. may I borrow some of those figures? Congrats Tamster on your debut 10K PR and 1st place AG award plus door prize , not to mention your usual striking and head turning ensemble. That was quite the hilly course and you sure showed it what's up. I'm sure you'll have no problem going sub 53 on a flat course soon. I was going to go back out with my megaphone and yell at ......... er, pace you the last mile or so, but didn't want to leave Rinda. (Can you blame me??) That ended up being an 8:55 pace, pretty impressive. You wanted me to email you something, but I forgot what it was. Anyway, good job, and thanks for riding with me. John

Woohoo Tammy!!! So sorry to distract John, Tammy.. me the non-racer has no clue about such things.... will tell him to go next time. You did an awesome job on such a hilly course!! you really have a faster 10k in you. I believe it was both John & I telling you to get your AG award.
