Last Saturday I ran both the 10K and 5K Monte Sano Road Races on Monte Sano Mountain in Huntsville. The 10K was at 8am and the 5K at 9:30. This was the first time I've run two races on the same day with the exception of a track meet during the summer, however the track meet consisted of shorter races (100m, 400m, 800m, 1M, 5K). The 10K course makes two loops of the 5K course. It consists of shady rolling hills, plus about 4 tenths of a mile on a relatively flat packed gravel trail with one of the dreaded cones turnarounds at a fairly narrow section of the trail. So, all this means a relatively tough course to set a PR.

I ran the 10K in 49:11 which was only good enough for 8th out of 18 in my AG and was not a PR. The time was good enough for 74th out of 248 entries overall. This race tends to bring out all the seasoned, fast runners in the area. This was fast enough to beat Jen, but it's a hollow victory because she was sick and probably shouldn't have been running at all. She ran a 54:18 which was 7th out of 27 in her AG, but this was her slowest 10K ever. Last year on the same course she ran 48:42 for 3rd out of 21 in her AG which is her 10K PR to date.

The 5K was hard after doing the 10K. I was stiff in the beginning and only managed a 7:55 first mile. I loosened up a little bit after that, but still only had a 24:25 5K which is the slowest 5K I've run in the past couple of years. Oddly, it was still good enough for 5th out of 17 in my AG.

Dora, ran an 8:47 1 mile on this hilly 1 mile fun run. She was the 5th overall kid to finish the run at all ages out sprinting an 8 year old to the finish line. Jen and I are going to let her start running a little longer now that she just turned 6 so that she can work up to 5K races since she enjoys running so much.

Great job by the caver family! Especially Dora!
I have run a 5K right after a 10K and it is hard! But it should be a walk in the park for a strong runner like you.
I am so glad to see to racing again.
I hope that Jen feels better soon.
Congratulations to you all.

tag, you did well running two races back to back. That's got to be tough. jen was tough too, running her 10K while sick. Congrats to both of you and to Dora who looks like a fine upcoming runner.

Jen just got back from the doctor. She has pneumonia. In retrospect, it probably wasn't so smart for her to run Saturday. Then again, now she can tell her grandkids (assuming she survives) that "I once ran a 10K with pneumonia....blah, blah, blah'

Great runs, tag! Never easy doing 'back to backs'. Glad you were able to enjoy the day with your family. That 6 year old sound like someone who going to be challenging you in the future. Continued great running through the fall.

Sorry to hear Jen is so sick. Get better.

Must be difficult to figure out how to run back-to-back raaces. Target one? Do reasonably well in both? Tough.

Congrats to the Caver family. Back to backs on Monte Sano sounds ambitious, but look likes you did well. Sorry hear Jen is ill, I hope she's feeling better.

The family that runs together, has fun together. I don't think that's a saying...but it should be!

Congrats to all of you - you're a tough bunch. One running back to backs, one running with pneumonia, and one who can beat me at the age of six. Wow!

Doubles are hard Tag. You did well. Sorry Jen wasn't up to pushing you. Hopefully she is recovering from the pneumonia. Woohoo to Dora! Great racing cavers!
