ugg, some days you just don't have it. and some days you make mistakes. today i didn't have it and i made mistakes. on the bright side, no injuries... yet...

showed up 20 min. before the race. pleaded with the girls at the closed registration table to take my entry. didn't ask for change. ran to get my number. ran to the portajon line. stretched a little. got out of the jon and walked to the starting line. bang! dumb dumb dumb... no warm up at all, amateur.

the only smart thing i did was to stop picking people off when i reached sw, a fast woman runner who sometimes trains with the same group with which i run saturday speed work. she dropped me in our last 40min time trial. we hit 6:28.1, 6:28.2 and 6:33.3 for the first three mile splits, perfect considering the rolling terrain. err, i mean the roller-coaster stomach drop-out downhill and the scrape your forehead as you lean forward uphill terrain. then she dropped me again, no surprise, going up the big hill. this race has more ascent than the last hood to coast leg that i ran, which was classified as "very hard"; it's a very tough race, almost 700 ft. climbing total. on the two mile hill i "ran" 7:20 and 8:35. then i floundered with a 6:54, 7:10 and 6:55 on the subsequent rollers to then finish.

at the mile 6 aid station i swiped my sunglasses off, stopped, ran back, picked them up, and kept going. amateur hour. starting temp 79, finishing 83f, uggg. err, i mean just the way i like it!

56:22, 7:03 pace; two minutes slower than last year, but i'm hoping some of that was residual h2c fatigue. about a minute behind third place AG... i've placed for the past two years, rats. errr, i mean i'm looking forward to starting a new streak next year!

oh well. it's september; this month is nothing but cute puppy dog and beautiful flowery posts from me, at least after today.

Your "dumb" is most people's excellent day at the races. Nice job under tough circumstances.

Make sure that puppy isn't peeing on those flowery posts.

Well, if you would have given them a larger bill and not asked for change, maybe they could have "delayed" the start a bit for you to get in a warm-up.

Way to go for racing a tough course so close after hood to coast. Don't think I would have been ready.

So, when you coming to race in the midwest -- we need to have some fun in a race together...

mcsolar, amateur is the way to go. Going pro ruins the enjoyment.

I'm happy to see you looking on the bright side.

Mistakes??? Oh maybe getting there a bit earlier would have helped, but the timing of the race (post H2C), hills, temp ... all the challenge of racing - no?

As a proponent of effort, my suspicion is that you put as much effort into this race and felt the effect as if you had run it 2 minutes faster.

Hmmmmmm - did that make sense??? I didn't think so either.

Okay - nice race???

So would you have preferred to have skipped h2c and placed in this race instead??? I didn't think so. This wasn't an 'A' race for you. As was pointed out, on a 'bad' day you still beat 99.9% of us. Ya didn't git hurt so quit yer whining. Hope that puppy doesn't look like that Ribs dog.

Deciding not to run because you weren't quite on time...Now THAT would have been a mistake!

Usually when you make mistakes, its best to get them all out of the way and not spread them out over a bunch races. Finishing only two minutes down from last year, I don't think to got them all out. :-P

Congrats anyway! :-)

Nice race, mc, despite the 'amateur hour' hiccups. Some of us can only wish to do as well. Is it on you goal list to catch that 'fast woman runner' in the future?
PJ

Edited for amateur spelling mistakes.

Hey emcee,
Don't get too down on yourself.
Sheesh, you show up late, don't warm up properly, temps in the 80's, elevation changes that would make a midwest flatlander cry.......
And then you are only 2 minutes off last year....I think you ran well considering....
I know you will get back into the AG awards in a hurry!
Stay healthy
John

Heh- I had the race of my life and you still beat me by 9 minutes. Some bad day!

It was great to meet you Monday. We should definitely get together for a lunchtime run once the weather gets cooler, although I run much...slower...than you.

Hi McS,

As you said, you didn't get hurt, and that is the most important thing. The only things you did wrong were not warm up, and drop and retrieve your sunglasses. Otherwise, it was probably the lack of recovery time after H2C, and the weather that got to you on race day. So fogedaboutit and move on. Better days are ahead!

Jay

I had a friend once, who had "SIUWB" (pronounced SooBee) embroidered on his cap. That stands for "suck it up whiny boy". Not that I'm trying to imply what you're inferring. Nope. Not at all. I'm just sharing a totally unconnected anecdote. Yep. That's it!

Yer still too fast for me!
