Pro and Breger, the logic to it is easy to understand. If you have a properly balanced program, then let's say you have 2-3 key workouts in a given week. The other days are recovery or easy days. So you are generally rested and prepped for your so-called "hard" workout and they feel easy. But then you are allowed an easy day, like say a recovery day, and you go into it fairly tired, so it seems like it drags and you don't feel so hot. Ron Daws pointed this out in "Running Your Best." I just stole it. Spareribs

Yes. It is not uncommon at all for a recovery day to be one of the toughest runs of the week.

Today was the hardest day of my week.
I felt as if it was between an almost Fred "hammer" (for me) and a heart attack. But, better than other whine days and pretty consistent with last week. Soft undulating path.
3 seconds? Someone is picking about 3 seconds. I'm going back to check his post and the time differences when I have more than 3:35 minutes to look at this.
You're all very funny. I'm going to have a glass of wine (medicinal) while the pizza dough rises. Let me know when you can all come for dinner.
Long run tomorrow with the Perky marathon woman.

Okay, Pro, you win. This time.

Edited to add that I come here even on "bad" days. 11 hours until Perky time.

Daws had his best days as a Lydiard trained runner. So his training was seasonal with the big mileage build up, the hill phase, interval or speed phase and then the racing phase. It's all detailed in "Self Made Olympian." Quite a story. Not a world class runner at the shorter distances but an over achiever and smart runner in the marathon.

He was Lorraine Moeller's husband for a short time and she still is a spokesperson for the Lydiard apporach. Daws died in 1992 of a heart attack. He was in his early 50's.

Daws made the 1968 Olympic team in the marathon and Moeller was a bronze medalist in the 1992 Olympic marathon.

Thanks for that Raider. I have "The Self-Made Olympian" and still go back and read it from time to time because of the stories mostly. I still have a very long letter he wrote me some time ago, helping me to train for Boston in the 80's. I only recently learned that he died. Oddly enough it was Arthur Lydiard who told me, and that was one week before Lydiard himself died. I asked Arthur a question about the days when he and Daws taught together and Lydiard said, "He's dead you know." Spareribs

Nice 15'er Euph. You deserve the rest tomorrow.

5 miles for me in 1:03:06, or 12:37 per mile. Now working on breaking 12:30's.

Jim thanks for your comments regarding my doctor's visit, but I swear it's true. Then after that happened and I told him I was there for some irregularity problems, he had me go in to see his nurse. She said, "Your HMO doesn't cover an enema so I'm just going to have to slap the sh*t out of you."
All in all not a great visit. Spareribs

Friday - 12 easy/slow miles - avg low 8:40's for day (8 at noon, then 4 more in early evening)

Getting ready to go out for another slow one. Running 5k tomorrow, but not expecting to do as well as last one. Been doing all long endurance--pointing towards HM in mid Oct.

Good one Euphie. Looks like you are serious about getting faster.

Rose, tell Dennis congratulations on a well run marathon, he did great!

Spareribs...

Saturday

I had the option of running in the rain today or in the cold tomorrow, so out the door I went just before 11am today.

22 miles, a warm up and cool down with the middle 20 in 3:04:50. A 9:14 pace, but more importantly I was taking electrolytes and didn't cramp. The weather was a non-factor, clearing by the time I turned at 11 miles.

Nice run Euph..

Jim, good luck today.

Rose, please, before you leave, bring the bottle of ibuprofen over here. Virginia, are you in Virginia? If so, I have a training partner for you and I'll have her down to speed by summer.

Rich, do you think cooler temps might be helping? Maybe you were hydrating by osmosis?

Thanks for all the kind words yesterday. In one of my most pleasant dreams last night, I looked at my schedule for next week and saw "OFF" across the page.

I wish you all great runs in perfect weather.

23M 3:15 (8:30's)

1hr had me at 7M (8:33's)
2hr had me at 13.5M (9:12's)
3hr was 21M (8:00's)

I had to one up Sans Souci's yesterday run of 22+ with 8's mixed in.
(It's a cheap ego boost, to target a talented runner who doesn't know they are being stalked :^) All in good fun SS.

Well, today was a ˝ marathon in MD that I had plans to do with a friend…but I am not running yet. This is getting depressing, so I thought I would share with you speedy guys and gals what I have learned about swimming.

Keep your eyes open while swimming. If you close your eyes while swimming, you won’t see the end of the pool coming.

Stay alert and focused while swimming. If you go into a “zone” while swimming, you will try and breathe while your face is in the water…and you will not be successful.

No need to hydrate prior to swimming as you will be drinking pool water. Drinking pool water is not fun, and doesn’t taste good either and if you swim you will drink pool water.

You will begin to focus on needed weight loss. Wearing a bathing suit will remind you of those 10 lbs you need to lose, every time you put it on.

But, the best thing I learned was:

Swimming is a great upper body workout. When a co-worker looks at you and says “wow, your upper body looks great, what are you doing” you will forget, for a brief moment that you are a runner and you will say with a big smile on your face, swimming.

OK, so I am still not even close to running. Went out on Monday did a 2.5 mile fitness walk and my heel still hurts from it. I am not a happy camper, but I am swimming!

Enjoy every moment you can run.......

I'm home and I'm tired. 3 legs, totaling (my Garmin says) 24.67 miles.

Reach-the-Beach. New course this year crossing the "Kanc." Leg 3. Brutal. 8 miles, 1500 feet up. 56:37. I felt at times that it was kind of flat, but it was always going up. Stopped with 2 miles to go, took a breather, and stopped a few more times, including in sight of the finish. We started at 2:30, with another 10 teams. Only 5 teams started after us, at 3. But I started to see the vans of the late starters passing me on my leg and I knew that they were coming, although none caught me. For me it was pretty lonely.

Leg 3 set up the rest of the race, and I was hurting the rest of the way from it. Leg 15 started just after midnight. After about a mile it started to rain. Rain was in the forecast, so this was not a surprise. It poured briefly, and my team came back and asked if I wanted a hat, but I was OK. Again lonely. Saw flashing red lights ahead and got him. Long lonely stretch along where "On Golden Pond" was filmed, but it was pitch black and had no sense of it. Just focus on the while line at the side of the newly-paved road. Little ups, little downs. At about 4, stopped to regroup, and then was OK, although not super fast. Just over 8 miles.

After about an hour's sleep in a school, the hallways of which were lined with sleeping bags, got going for my final leg, leg 25, at about 9:20. I was supposed to do leg 26, but our leg 2 got hurt his second time out and we all had to move up a leg (our our Leg 1 had to do 4). This was supposed to be a 4.5 miler until about a week ago when some bridge construction was stalled and the legs re-routed. So it was now 8.3. Had several decent hills, including a 200 foot gain over a mile, and I stopped probably 8 times, always briefly. Stop, regroup, restart. Repeat. Pouring rain, and then just before the finish a swirling wind, giving it the feel of the "Wizard of Oz." Freaky. But I was drenched but done. Or drenched and done.

Another good experience. This year we started late and so were more alone. But we proved ourselves, finishing 21st out of 351.

Wow Joe, you had some tough legs out there. I feel like a wimp for just running 14.3 miles (Garmin).

That leg 25 was absolutely brutal, especially in the wind and rain. We had our oldest runner do it, I've never seen him so tired.

Congratulations! We saw your van quite a few times.

BAP,

Kudos to everyone who finished. The race has a tremendous aura of a shared purpose, both within a team and throughout the entire field. Except for the final legs, I hadn't appreciated how every leg has something brutal. Our 4 and 5 were killed on their downhills and their quads were hurting for the rest of the way. I overheard some people say how their next challenge would be Hood to Coast. I told them that, based upon a report from someone who's done both, RTB is much harder, because of its hills.

Edited to Add: I learned that a video (of stills) done of our 2006 effort (when the sun shone) is on YouTube. I was 49 then.

Edited to Add: The finish of Leg 3.

Congratulations Joe and BAP,
I doesn't sound like they come any tougher than that one. Have a good recovery and this could be a springboard to a big finish for '07.

I just got back from Golden Gate Park after running 19:04 in the Banana Chase 5k. For a while I thought I might break into 18's but struggled on the last mile. Afterwards I did a unplanned 9-mile "cooldown" with a couple old baracudas who really punished me the last 4 miles, so I am very tired now. Will probably do a RR later.
