Jack London was not a runner. He was a oyster pirate though until he reformed in his late teens. He lived hard and died hard. He wrote well.

Back in the day (London's day) whiskey was often a drink taken by long distance runners to pep them up during a race. I smoked cigars for years even while training for a 2:28 marathon. Shorter loved a few shots of hard liquor the night before a race. I saw this with my own eyes.

Alvaro Mejia, a world class runner, a good friend of Shorter and a Boston Marathon winner, told me he was shocked by Shorter's drinking prowess. Especially when Shorter went out the next day in a 10,000 meter race and beat him.

Pre loved his beer (and Donuts) but he was young.

Living the healthy lifestyle was not that big a thing back when I was running some of my best times. Donuts, pies and pastry were considered carbs. So was beer. We trained hard, raced and enjoyed ourselves. Gatorade was the only energy replacement drink we knew of and we preferred beer.

"prowess" is that what you call it??? Ooooh, what men...they can fill up on booze the night before and still kick @ss at the races...I'm so impressed.

Ask Henry Rono how much it helped his career.

Yup, a real sign of manhood...how much alcohol a man can hold and still function. And it's an image that will last forever, I'm afraid. Truth is that in that a primary symptom of acloholism is the ability to hold much more alcohol than a normal person. The catch is that the more you can hold, the more you more of a job you can do on yourself. Then, eventually, the alcohol starts to take over. It takes longer for some than others. For some it's like a sprint, for others more of a 5k, and on through to the marathon. Only 1 in 10 they say, but 10% of everyone is a very large number.

A moment of silence for our bretheren from 9/11/01 and all of the lives lost since trying to recover our innocence. Shout out to DH and comrades for what you do.

I ran 8.1 today--way too much compared to what I've been doing lately, but I needed to kick it up a big notch. No tunes, no gals...just a run to clean mental house and put fall goals in place. I am sore, but in a good way and relief is only a swallow away.

Let your family know how much you love them. glidegal

Tuesday - 59 degrees and light rain (heavy during the last mile)

13.63 miles (I ran the new Maine Coast Marathon Route plus a little)

1:45:02 - (7:42)
HR - 138 / 151 - (HR Monitor showed a spike of 172 right at the start ... this was a slow mile so I know this was a glitch.

8:19 - 7:56 - 7:36 - 7:41 - 7:26 - 7:36 - 7:40 - 7:44 - 7:44 - 7:48 - 7:47 - 7:46 - 7:28 - 4:24

After a couple of miles warming up I wanted to run the bulk of this close to marathon pace (7:38) seeing that I ended up with a 7:42 average and a nice strong 7:28 final mile I am quite pleased especially that this didn't feel especially hard at all.

Edited to add the link to my motionbased entry on this run and the new Maine Coast Half Marathon course:

Tuesday - 7 more on same grass loop under noon sun at about 8:40 pace. Debating on whether to do 5k this Sunday.

Good running, Glidegal and Bob. Excuse my ranting--somewhat uncalled for. Must be spending too much time in the sun

Monday

3 miles @ recovery

Tuesday

5 miles easy. Hoping to be up for a tough 10 miler with hills tomorrow.

Nice runs y'all.

Euphoric, what model Brooks shoe did you buy? I'm running in Asics 2120's and 1110's and would like to try a different shoe the next time I buy...

Great runs, all! GG, sounds like you are all mended and ready for that next race. When is that? Jim, I believe in an equal opportunity vent policy.

Rich, are you sure you want to ask a girl about shoes? I went to the shoe store with the intention of buying the Brooks Adrenalines I had already tried on at least twice. I think I wrote in an earlier post that the guy at the shoe store told me he thought they were "too much shoe" for me. Being easily led, I tried the Brooks Axiom and bought them. Those are the shoes I ran in on Sunday. I need to add that I put lots of "The Words" in them and that may contribute to some of my fondness for them.

I've always had just a little twinge in my right hip. I expected to have some pain when I woke up on Monday morning since almost all of Sunday's run was on a hard surface. No pain at all. Even the old twinge was gone and I hadn't taken anything. The only difference was the shoes. Okay, maybe a few endorphins were released after Sunday's experience.

The Axioms were also endorsed here by a guy who calls himself The Pro. While they seemed to be a good shoe I thought I would go back to another running store and try the Adrenaline which I think The Pro described as a "real" shoe. Our new local running store has an exercise physiologist available to fondle and fit feet. He echoed The Pro's endorsement and told me that he wears the Axiom and thinks they are a great shoe. (He just came back from Switzerland and placed 20th in whatever was going on there.) He also did not think I needed the Adrenaline and told me to bring my Axioms in to see if we could "tweak" them to eliminate some of the slide I have in the front of the shoe. The Axioms have lots of mesh across the front and they seem to stretch out pretty easily. The girl's model also has a narrower heel than the 2110 which works really well for me.

Three in the know people and one inexperienced runner think the Axiom is a good shoe. Axioms do not come in widths.

Now for my report. I went out for another run in the rain yesterday afternoon. My legs felt tired and no one else showed up so I shortened the run to 4 miles. It took 2 miles to feel warmed up. The second two were finished in 18:25, I cooled down and called it a day. I wish I could do numbers like Bob.

There was a biography of Jack London I read as a kid, called "Sailor on Horseback." I remember this one incident from it: When he returned from the Russo-Japanese war as a correspondent, he decided he wanted to be a writer, so he began sending his stuff into Atlantic Monthly, Harper's etc., and all he got were rejection slips. Convinced they were not reading his stuff anymore he sent in a half finished story to test his theory. Back came another rejection slip. So he took the train all the way from the west coast to the east coast to meet the editor in person and confront him about not reading the whole manuscript and discovering the error. When he did, the editor replied, "Mr. London, I do not need to eat the whole egg to know that it is rotten." Crushed by this response, he asked the editor for advice. The editor told him to read, to read all the great novels, and to find his own style, which he did. I read all of Jack London as a boy and loved it all. I wonder if it would be interesting to go back and read it again. But I still think his story "To Build a Fire" (do I have that right?), was fascinating. (Since I'm not running, I have to do something.) Spareribs

We are back on the track. 2 mile warmup, then strides, then 6 X 800s at 5k pace.
Deena Kastor will be running the Tufts 10K, then to Italy for a chance to make up for Osaka. She is still scheduled to run with my club later in the month however.

I feel like I just did my first "Autumn run" this morning, it being dark, cold, and breezy. But I did a good-feeling 5 miles at a steadily increasing pace, progressing from a 10:00 initial warmup to 8:00 for the last few tenths.

I did a paper on Jack London while in college and came down the SF Bay Area and visited all of his old haunts. It took weeks and was fascinating. I also read most if not all of his books.

He packed a full life into that 40 years and never stopped writing. Alcohol aside, he was a man on fire. But I know this is not the Jack London forum and I digress.

I think the meta message is that the so called "pure life" as runners we might seek hasn't made us a better lot than the guys and gals who ran back in the day who perhaps enjoyed a little alcohol now and then and also had a different idea of what healthy living was or is. John Walker, the great miler from New Zealand and his "mates" always thought Americans were too uptight about having a beer now and then.

I am afraid I am in the "enjoy life now and don't worry about extending it" group. I am not saying we all need to drink or eat badly but I do believe a now and then danish, donut, steak or a good steak is better for the head and psyche.

I found the Jack London digression interesting. Running is a passion for all of us, but it's fun to go off on an interesting tangent like that.

I feel like a babe in the woods with this walking. Today it was 3 miles in 38:02, or 12:41 per mile and I had a breakthrough revelation. Speed comes from leg turnover, not long stride. I mentally pictured race walkers and I realized they have a very short stride but their turnover is very fast. I want to go to the track next and do 400's to see what is the best approach.

There is a 10K in Dallas this weekend that I am thinking of entering. fredurie said here a while ago that I should go race and see how many fat people I can beat. I won my AG in this race last year and won a pair of Adidas and a lawn chair. Obviously I won't win anything at 12:xx per mile this year but it should help me stay focused.

I believe the entire population of Kickrunners now think I really am Earthrunner.

Core exercises working well and now have Superfeet inserts. Bought two new pairs of shoes yesterday, a Saucony stability shoe and an Asics DS Trainer. Spareribs

Have a good one Jim.

By the way, I don't disagree with your take on alcohol but that is something guys like Rono had in them the day they were born. Now Rono's problem is that he weighs too much, not drinking. If he could drop 30 pounds or more he might really surprise himself. I noticed as of late his race times have slowed since that sub 18 he ran at Carlsbad. Age and abuse evetually intersect.

9 miles at 7:12's. After a couple days slacking after my tri, I figured I should do some "quality" miles.

Gym workout this morning. 2 sets of 25 Sit ups on slant board, 15b leg drops for belly and 20 girl push ups. Started out with a very novel ride on the bike... I've been reading a lot about interval training to speed up toning and weight loss. Interesting. Not as interesting as say, Jack London and dark bars, but good info nonetheless.

Jim, if that was a rant, it was gentle.
I'll third the motion: nice run Pro--I didn't realize you're in the 7 range... slacking agrees with you.

Hi Euphie!

Euphoric, I was thinking Brooks Adrenalines as a next shoe, then saw your post about the Axioms. I'd like to do something about these black toenails and will try one or the other of the Brooks shoes.

And yes, I'll ask a girl about shoes, you seem like a serious runner to me.

Wednesday - 10 miles with 600 ft elevation gain & loss. I tried to run comfortably hard, splits ranged from 10:58 to 7:42.

Nice run Pro.

Thanks for noticing Fred.

Spareribs, good luck with the 10K, I like your attitude...
