Ahem. I haven't been around much lately but thought the comments about tapering were interesting, especially since I'm right in the middle of doing four marathons in 3 1/2 months. In 2002 I ran the Adirondack Marathon with no taper while in the middle of my highest weekly mileage average ever. I was averaging in the low 60's per week which was very good for me with my propensity for foot inuries in those days. I did Adirondack in the middle of fifteen consecutive days (as a training run) and did a double two days after. In 2006 I ran Adirondack again with no taper but I was averaging in the mid 50's. Three weeks later I got a 3 minute marathon PR. This year I did Adirondack again but since running San Francisco in July I have only been averaging low 40's per week. What does this prove? I don't know. But I am still hopeful that my base miles of fast running combined with the two recent marathons can propel me to another PR in two weeks. I guess a the more miles you run and the bigger the goal race, the more important it is to taper. As for Steely Dan, well... that is the reason behind my screen name. Big fan here. The name Steely Dan is the name a character in a book gave to her female pleasuring appliance. Can't remember the book title and am too lazy to google. http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum13/HTML/011121.shtml [This message has been edited by Doctor Wu (edited Sep-20-2007).]

Well now...aren't we all a bit frisky lately...more excitement here than arts and crafts day at the old folks home.Steely Dan has a song, Bad Sneakers....hmmmmm Fred: as far as I am concerned, you are still prime I am with everyone else, I love the discussions that erupt on this board. RCG: come visit all you want, don't let the grumpy old guys scare you off, they don't scare Dark Horse..... Refrigerator, now that made me laugh, not what I was thinking but appropriate response.... GG: I don't know if I use my legs enough, I am grateful to be swimming at all, however I get from end to end. I do know that prior to swimming I did no upper body workout so any workout will show on me....but I suspect I am an arm swimmer. While I do kick, when I had an instructor he kept saying, I want you to swim from the hips. I got plenty hip to swim from but not sure I have engaged them yet. I went out for a walk yesterday. 2.93 miles. Embedded in the walk was 4-1 minute runs. Not fast runs 13:30 m/m, but runs. No harm done. I am excited. ------------------ Running in wellness Liz Lizs Profile

Insert red faced emoticon here... Dr Wu! you totally trumped me-- I was just being facetious (aka smarta$$) about the appliance... I had no idea... that or the band name... Nicely played. You too, euph. (How are your African violets doing?) Back to Wu: Geesh, 4 marathons in 3.5 months...? Change your handle to Energizer Bunny. Funny rich... yes, I am starting a new trend. But I don't want to get 86'd out of here, so I ran 6.36 in 1:05:48 today. I'm blaming my gal pals for slow... btw, they should add DARK to the running conditions on the log... liz--re: hips: your coach means keep your legs straight and strong...no foot flutter, use your entire leg starting from the hip, not the knee. gosh, I sounded like ribs for a second. ribs--thanks for the vote of confidence.. my ham/butt is so sore and tight when I run I don't forsee a PR... a case of the butt kicking me rather than the opposite. Why didn't you ever tell us about the gorgeous view when you come through the tunnel into Pittsburgh: the confluence of the rivers, the bluffs, etc. Just read a book that contained that... thought of you going there so frequently. chatty today, sorry. glidegal

Liz, use that kickboard for part of your workout. Swim guy probably doesn't want the kick to generate from the knee. Think undulation and propulsion. Flip over and do some on your back. Bending at the knee produces drag. Less drag = faster swimmer. Flutter, flutter, flutter. That will be 49 cents please. My refrigerator has run more today that I have. Groan.

Euphie can swim too! I'm impressed. Did I mention that I try to swim (and fail).Another nooner niner here. Since I spent yesterday hanging with my cable guy, I was most interested in doing something to improve the deficit. So an easy 4M at 9:00s, and then raised the ante to bring the next 5M in at 6:40s (whew). -Caigr

I like pi๑a coladas... Hee hee hee and look, Dr. Wu and I are on the same album... unless Katy Lied... All songs written by Becker and Fagen. "Black Friday" 3:33 "Bad Sneakers" 3:16 "Rose Darling" 2:59 "Daddy Don't Live in That New York City No More" 3:12 "Doctor Wu" 3:59 "Everyone's Gone to the Movies" 3:41 "Your Gold Teeth II" 4:12 "Chain Lightning" 2:57 "Any World (That I'm Welcome To)" 3:56 "Throw Back the Little Ones" 3:11 Sorry for the long riff.
TAPER. After reading the points of view... it seems that the answer is "one size does not fit all". We ran 7 marathons in 2005. The first one in Feb. was all right but the one 4 weeks later was a personal best. (with no really long runs in between, just one day of speed and the rest "maintenance miles". Then there were the three summer ones... only run to collect the state and the medal... BUT, Omaha was a humid, miserable run BUT 4 weeks later... personal best in Connecticut (with no long runs in between). This has no scientific merit, just an anecdotal tidbit re: tapering. I think my mitochondria needs more time to deal with the last long run before the 26.2 miles insult.

Heh heh. I guess now everybody knows who Doctor Wu is. Nah. The under 40 crowd stays away from here. I still laugh whenever one of the young'uns on these forums says, "Oh, I thought you were an Asian doctor!" My mind said do 8 on Wednesday and 11 today but the body said it's still in recovery mode so I skipped yesterday and did an EZ 6.2 tonight. Will make it up tomorrow and probably do a double on Sunday including an 8 mile meadow, trail and dirt road race in the morning and an EZ 10k in the PM. Rose: What you're saying about no long runs in between closely spaced marathons is starting to make sense to me. I don't want to sacrifice speed for long runs and this fall my marathons are scheduled close enough together to be my long runs. With two left this year (Oct 7 and Nov 18) I think I can go for a PR in the first one and still have ample time to recover to go for another in the second. A little sproink this morning unlike yesterday's creakiness. 10 miles at GA - about 9:12 min/mile pace. 77 and 89%.Enough talk about tapering. Let's talk about the opposite end of the spectrum. I did a 21 miler last Sunday and have 18 scheduled this Sunday. But a group is going out for 22. Should I do 22 or drop off at 18? (I've already got 40 miles this week including a 14.6 and today's 10. Am I just thinking crazy? Opine please! Bill ------------------ Bill's Profile

I think the key is whether you have any significant workouts next week and whether you will be recovered well enough to do them with enthusiasm. That would be my guideline.

Bill,Are you still doing the 20k on the 30th, then the 30k 2 weeks after that? If so, I'd say that 22 miles this week is pushing your luck. However, a lot depends on how you are recovering. Only you can know that.

Bill, 12.4 @ race pace in 9 days. Today is the key workout. 8 times a mile or 10 miles with 6 @ race pace, or something like that, and how about just 12 miles on Sunday. Rest.[This message has been edited by fredurie (edited Sep-21-2007).]

All, hello! Today is my 50th birthday so I decided it was legit to read this thread! I decided to celebrate my 50th by training for my first marathon in 25 years. It has been a hot and humid summer here in Ohio but I am on track to complete the Columbus Marathon in a month. I am quite awed by the mileage that many of you are putting in, as well as the speed work. My goal is simply to finish and I have now done a few 15 milers and will do a 20 miler next weekend. My weekly mileage is in the 30-40 mile range, with Monday and Friday off each week. Thanks for being the inspirations that you are!

Happy Birthday OhioMom, no more lurking since you are legit now! Good luck on your marathon next month and be sure to keep us posted, from your post I gather that you have run at least one prior marathon so you have some idea as to what to expect, but does your 50 year old body know that is the question?

Happy Birthday Ohio Mom and welcome to AARP (All About Running Progress) land! We can't wait to hear about the last weeks before your run and your race results. Good for you setting this goal to celebrate your life. Will likely do a fast 3.5 later today to see what the chances are for a decent race Sunday. Breger, thanks for getting us out of the kitchen and back on the streets where we belong. Not sure what I'd do either in your case... just don't compromise your progress. Nice steady runs for bobscamman and fredurie. Nice CD by rose. Good weekends and workouts to all. glidegal

Thursday - 10 mile, 6 at noon plus 4 more after work. Both slow on grass loop.Plan on 4-5 slow, both today and tomorrow. Hopefully this will give me enough rest for Sunday's Masters 10k Nationals in Paso Robles. This has been an "on again, off again" race due to family stuff. Earlier in the week it was off but now back on. In in the process I ran 19 miles Wednesday (7 more later after reported 12), including 6 x 1600 follwing last Sunday's race. If I don't run well at Paso it will be because I didn't taper. If I run well well at Paso it will be because I didn't taper I don't know how you do it Fred. When I hit 60 or 70 it seems like all I do is run--at least that's what people tell me. Congrats on another 100. Did I every tell you that I think you should race?
