Friday afternoon found Arf and I in Salt Lake City with a long drive to Green River Wyoming. An area I knew little about except for zooming by on I-80 on a cross-country trip.
The E-mail from the race director said she wanted to get the packages to everyone Friday night, they could be picked up at the River Festival until 8:00 PM and to call her if you would be late.
Road construction conspired against us and delayed our arrival, we left a message with the RD, and arrived at 8:30, The first booth we saw at the festival had a box that looked like typical race packages, we asked the person at the booth if this is where we pick up the packages, blank stare..packages for the race? The blank stared continued, then she asked what race? The marathon. Blank stare. Finally she asked whats your name reached into the box and handed us our packages. I commented to her that it must have been a long day; she said, tomorrow would be longer Im sure it was a long weekend, and you have to love the volunteers for doing this.

Saturday Morning came WAY too early as we boarded the buses for the 5:15 departure, Due to some nagging IT band issues, Arf decided to run the marathon. There were 3 luxurious buses with restrooms for the marathon runners. It was a little chilly in the morning and the buses stayed at the start until they said go. The runners were on two cramped, crowded short buses. Arf was consigned to sitting on the floor, as she heard the people around her dissing anyone who would do all the training for a full marathon when they could run the instead. She said she felt she was on the wrong bus; these people were not her type. The short buses got to the start and kicked everyone off to stand in the cold, dark Wyoming wilderness for 40 minutes.

Many of the 116 marathon finishers were attempting marathons in all 50 states , there arent a lot of choices for Wyoming marathons.

Aamos decided at the last minute to run this race, So the gun went off and I found myself running with Aamos and Murphy the wonder dog.

(this is not actually Murphy but this Sheba Inu looks much like him) His owner said the Race Director OKed the dog if he stayed on a leash, so here they were. The owner kept telling the dog slow down. He said if Murphy was off the leash the dog would have been in front of everyone.

Before mile 4, Amy and Murphy were gone, never to be seen again. Early in the race I spotted two herds of wild horses in the distance, one herd galloping along as the sun rose, the other herd was grazing.

The race was almost entirely run on county maintained dirt and gravel roads. Very rugged country, lots of sage, not a tree nor shade in sight, 7500 elevation and a high of about 85 made this a tough race. The 6:30 start meant many runners finished before it really started getting hot, still the thin air made for a slow race.
We really were running with the horses. Aid stations were every two miles. They all had water and sports drink. In addition to the marathon, there was an endurance horse race that ran in the opposite direction of the marathon, and a horse Poker run that went out and back for several miles of the marathon course. As I arrived at one of the aid stations, a group of horse riders were getting a card from the volunteer (double duty aid stations)

The Green river area is the Trona capitol of the world. The mineral is mined from around 1000 underground. It is used to make baking soda. (A box of baking soda was included in each of the goodie bags) Aamos, as first woman earned a huge chunk of this for a trophy

Arf, with an age group 3rd in the won a horse shoe (If she gets three more, can she trade it in for the horse?) My 4:16 was good for 12 of 27 in my age group. I hope to do a lot better in a few weeks, we will see.

Overall, my legs didnt feel like they had even done a long run, but the thin air made it a difficult race
Dave

Dave,

Congrats on running at that altitude. Definitely not enough 02 at 7500 feet.

I just drove through Green River last week. It was probably the nicest place in all of Wyoming, but that's not saying too much. I wonder what the people on Arf's bus would have thought if they knew what Arf did for mileage?

divechief - thanks for the report. Sounds like a great time you and Arf had, except for the short bus.

I've driven thru that part of the country but it was dead winter and coooollllllddddddddddddddd!!! It was beautiful even then.

congrats,

Hi Dave,

I can't quite tell if you actually enjoyed this event as there were definitely some negatives to go with the positives. Would you do it again?

I like the interesting awards they gave out. At the Deadwood Michelson trail the AG winners got railroad spikes.

Congrats on finishing another marathon. Good luck at Bizz. Maybe I'll see you there.

Dave, well, it sounds to me like this was not one of your more enjoyable marathons, but anytime you can be in a marathon with a couple of great goddesses, it can't be all bad right? congratulations on a nice marathon!

Just a note to add that you can read all about the remarkable Murphy and his human, Del Acker in the Sept./Oct 2006 issue of Marathon & Beyond......and that it is always a pleasure to see Dave & Corrine (Frank even has a crush on Corrine), just wish I could have stayed longer (or that they'd gotten there earlier, drat!).
grins,
A

I did enjoy this race, The stark rugged landscape really was beautiful. It was a challenging race, and I would not recommend this for a first marathon, but if you want to see the wild west, it might be a good choice.

dive, it sounds like a unique course, much of it pretty neat. It also sounds like the elevation and temperature could make it tough. Congrats to you and arf.

I know you enjoyed it as only a Maniac could! Good job. That's some altitude, dude (my feeble sluggish afternoon attempt at being clever).

added-After that photo posted last time, there are lots of Boomer guys with a crush on Arf.

Wow, I had no idea the altitude was so high in those parts. Good job! Wonderful awards and goodie bags (baking soda, rocks and horseshoes? what's not to love!), sometimes those are the things that really stand out. I've got to go dig out my old Marathon & Beyond stash to see if I have that one still...

arf runs third in her division in the half and gets a quarter of a horse and AAmos is first woman overall in the marathon and get a big chuck of baking soda? Weird!

Congratulations! Are you going for 50 states too?

Sensible -- though tough, I'm sure -- choice by arf to run the half. Congrats on the 3rd place.

Aamos is amazing. Congratulations on 1st place, Amy.

Dave, I have a feeling you're incapable of being negative about any running experience. I enjoy reading your reports; in-person accounts are even better. I love the baking soda in the goodie bags!

Good luck in your next one. I hope you do well too!

What a classic, rustic and rather romantic place to run a marathon. I am glad you had a great time running with the horses. How lucky you are to be running with not one, but two boomer goddesses. I bit you are not complaining about this, right my frend?

Any pictures of the wild horses to go along with the RR?. Or better yet... any pictures of the wild goddesses and you?

Congratulations Dave on a good race and good placing, but I always though Trona, CA, was the trona capital of the world.

I was in Green River once in early June 1972. The wind was blowing 50 MPH at least and it was about 40F at noon. Haven't been back again. Where's arf's report anyway???

Great race, Dave! I think this sets you up nicely for a better time in your next marathon. I can only imagine what it must feel like to finish a marathon as if you haven't run one. I'm always really exhausted.

Congrats to Arf and Amy too!

Dave,

Sounds like you had a great run in the rarified air. You are really are taking this "maniac" stuff seriously with all those marathons this year. Keep running smart, like you have been, and you will get your years goal. Let me know which races your running this fall and hopefully we can meet up again. Congrats on a well run race again.

Congrats and smart running to Arf too. Good chioce to cut back to the half with a nagging IT band.
