A great day for the city of Flint once again. Not even mother nature, with four confirmed tornados the night before, no power for much of the downtown area, and the collapse of a building near the finish line on Wednesday morning, could dampen the spirit of the Crim. 14,700 runners and walkers were registered as of Friday night. The day dawn cloudy with some showers and 70 degrees, with the humidty it made for a very sticky day. Met with Rochester and MarkGuy at the clock and hoped to meet others but with power outages and traffic problems, no such luck. To the race, hit start line at about 5:00 minutes after start. Didn't get very far before I hit a wall of walkers 4 lanes wide and 10 people deep. I ended up shooting and scooting for the 1st two miles, running on the sidewalk, curbs, and peoples lawn. Was able to stay on an even pace of about 9 min. per mile. At just after 2 miles we turned on to 3rd Ave which takes to the Old Chevy in the hole area. This stretch of road was just redone in the last few weeks, as apart of Carriagetown makeover. I was able stay at about 9 min. mile through the 4 mile mark coming through at 36:30, shortly later at Sunset and Nolan the Bristol Rd Church of Christ sang hymns to the runners , for I believe 13th year, as we prepare for the Bradley hills. It is not that the coarse is flat, up till the Bradley's, it isn't, but the elevation change is so intense so quickly. You go from one of the lowest elevations to the highest in less than a mile. The 3 quick steep hills followed by a long steady hill, then followed by rollers for the next 2 miles, it takes a toll on the body. I was able to hit the 5 mile mark at 45:48, slower than I had hoped but better than I had ever done to this point. At mile 6-8 we run through the nicest area in city of Flint houses in the 400 thousand- to near one million dollars. At mile 7 I have slowed to 64:38, I know I have to pickup the pace to come in anywhere near my goal 90 min. I began to pickup my pace but it doesn't look good. I hit 9 miles 82 :08, I need to run 7:52 the last mile,so it is possible, I press on. The Crim finishes with a beautiful downhill with a huge banner and clocks that you can .3 miles from the end. I pickup the pace going into a sprint with a1/4 mile to go. About 100 meters from the end as prepare to pass a young lady, a spectator jumps the barricade and she swerves to avoid him tripping me slightly, I break stride for a second but as I accelerate around her I begin to cramp in my hamms I slow slightly, and push on. I cross the tape in 90:01, missing my goal by 1 second. I finish 282 out of 609 in my age group, and 2400 out 7000 or so. The best thing about the race was that for the first time I run a negative split running the second half in 44:13. A great day for a great race, in great town, on a bad day to run. Marathon Derrick

Way to go, Derrick. Kind of a bummer to come so close to your goal and then miss it due to the psycho spectator. Congratulations on the negative splits!

Congratulations marathon Derrick on your great race and first negative split. You did a great job describing to us the spirit of the Crim.

It sounds like a very challenging race. I'd like to meet up with some of the boomers there next year.------------------ Never regret anything that made you smile, SteveP My User Profile

I'm sorry I missed you, Derrick. You ran a nice race with the crowds, particularly at the beginning, and the humidity. You came within a second of your goal with a strong finish and negative splits. Congratulations.TomS ------------------ My Profile

Nice running Derrick. way to hammer that last mile. I would have probably been more frustrated with the clot in the earl miles than the incident at 10M-100 yards. Good Job, jjj

Nice report, Derrick, and nice details about the race and city that I didn't get into my RR. It will be interesting to run out 3rd Ave. in a couple of years and see what they've done with it. By the way, that was Mark Suyama, not MarkGuy that was with me by the clock. The on-course entertainment stays pretty much the same each year, too, and I just now put together that gospel music as maybe being a prayer for us before we hit the Bradleys. Having bonked up those hills before, in my 9th race I finally "did them right" this year and lost very little time for a change, leaving enough for a negative split like yours. I also look for the high-school bands and jazz orchestra as landmarks around the course. Congratulations on basically making your goal. Hope to see you next year -- maybe with more time to chat. ------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

Great run. I'd like to hit 90 minutes there someday too. Sounds like the heat and humidity didn't wear you down too much. You don't let that 1 extra second bother you too much, do you? It doesn't mean much in a 10-mile race.

Good run Derrick. You know you can do 10 in under 90 if you did it in those conditions. Very good job. Spareribs

Gahhh! How aggravating! Still, very good racing there. The course really sounds challenging -- seems to have all the obstacles (oblivious spectators, crowds, hills, tornados...).

Hi Derrick,Sorry I missed the meeting at the clock -- maybe next year. Nice job on your time in spite of the weather. I can sense your pride in Flint and I think most people that run this race understand it. No question there is a real city there, with real neighborhoods filled with decent people. I like how the course takes us through different areas of the city and people cheer the runners on in all of them. Is there a story behind "Old Chevy in the hole area"? Mark

The old chevy in the Hole is where I started my career at GM in 77 It also where the sit -down strike took place in 1937. It was demolished several years ago but the memories still remains

Heat, Humidity, and Herds! It amazes me that you are able to run that well under those conditions. And I'm betting next year you will kick 90's butt!------------------ My Profile "I think I can, I think I can"

Good job on pulling it out after that slow start. I hate those roadblocks in races! And your spectator problem sounds like me running into that big lady at the end of my marathon! Such a drag. But hey, you did it and if that last incident hadn't thrown you a bit, you'd have been under 90! Nicely done.------------------ evanflein

Missing your goal by only one second is tremendous and totally worth it that you didn't fall down after that spectator was in the way! Great job! Congratulations! PR?

Very nice racing, Derrick. Those are some tough obstacles to overcome, and you did a fine job. I'm sure you'll come in under your 90:00 goal next year!

Excellent race Derrick! You know you would have easily been under your goal if not for the walkers at the start (why do they do that?? drives me nuts!) and the incident at the finish. Very sweet on the negative splts. Congrats!Skip

Great run, Derrick! Sounds like you lost a few seconds up front getting around the 'wall to wall' walkers. You'll get under 90 for 10 soon. Well done! Thanks also for the RR. PJ

Nice running, Derrick! 1 second away!?!? Oh how close that was! You were in shape to smash that 90 minute barrier easily, but it sounds like the first couple miles were nasty..... I think it takes so much more energy to work out of the pack and get into the open. Great running, considering all the distractions. John
