For busy people:

1:35:54, a 2½ minute PR
24 of 66 in AG
98 of ~620 men

For the rest of us with copious discretionary time:

This race bills itself as Utah's premiere half marathon event. The course runs down Hobble Creek Canyon into the small town of Mapleton and finishes at the city park. It is mostly rolling downhill, with some flat stretches and a couple small uphills. The course is all on pavement except for about 100 yards on grass at the end.

Registration was originally limited to 1000 runners, but later this was increased to 1200. One consequence of this was that there were not enough buses to get everyone to the start of the race on time. We started 35 minutes late, robbing us of the coolest part of the morning and negating everyone's warmup. An announcement would have been nice, but we were all left waiting at the start without knowing what was happening. A premiere event should do better.

Weather report for Rose: clear skies, a light breeze, about 55 F at the start, and 75 F by the end.

My goal (inspired by Sans Souci) was to run sub-1:35 (7:15/mi), which would be a 3½ minute PR. I made a pace band to help keep me on track.

Mile 1 - 7:39 @ 158 bpm

It took me 25 seconds to reach the starting line (which time I did not count ), and about half of the first mile to get past everyone who started too far up in the pack.

Mile 2 - 7:09 @ 170
Mile 3 - 6:56 @ 171
Mile 4 - 6:50 @ 172
Mile 5 - 6:58 @ 173
Mile 6 - 6:54 @ 173

This is the fastest part of the course, and my effort felt about right. I had earned back the time I lost in the first mile and was now about a minute ahead of my goal. For the first five miles, I was passing runners who went out too fast.

Mile 7 - 7:14 @ 173
Mile 8 - 7:31 @ 173
Mile 9 - 7:39 @ 172
Mile 10 - 7:33 @ 174

This part of the course was flatter, and the only real uphill is in mile 8. I watched for someone to pace off of, but everyone around me seemed to be surging and fading.

By the ten-mile mark, I was still ahead of my goal, but just barely. I increased my effort, but I was dealing with the heat now.

Mile 11 - 7:45 @ 173
Mile 12 - 7:39 @ 174
Mile 13 - 7:23 @ 178
The rest - 0:44 @ 182

Finish - 1:35:54 (7:19 pace), a 2½ minute PR.
Splits - 46:24/49:30

During the last mile I started picking off runners, and passed five or six. This was great fun and helped me keep my effort strong. I was the 98th he-bear to finish, so I got a nifty "elite 100" medal. Without the push during the final mile, I would have finished 102nd.

I ran my previous HM PR just five weeks ago on a similar course, so I was thrilled to run faster today. I believe I am capable of even faster times.

I appreciate the encouragement from you fine people. In particular, thanks to Sans Souci, TheProFromDover, mcsolar99, and SkipAZ for their help. You guys & gals are the best.

I am envious of 55 F... we had a "feels like" of twice that today!

Excellent racing Millbionic!

I enjoyed the paces and the passing.

I especially liked you being 98 and not 102.

Congratulations.

Excellent racing, Millbot! You just keep getting better and better. Too bad about the race delay. I bet that was frustrating but you sure didn't seem to let it shake you.

Congrats on the PR!

Dang, that's fast! Must be a tough AG. Of course you're capable of faster times, especially since you finished so strong in 75 degree heat. There's something to learn from every race. Did Ribs say that? I can't remember. Did you pick up any ideas today that would help with that?

Very nicely done millbot and 2nd HM PR in a row, good going! As you say, they need to get that start time sorted but you still made good despite the delay and weaving around the slower runners. Isn't it great to reel 'em in!

I liked the way you planned this out and executed it, with good pacing and a pace band. You are running very well now. Congrats. Spareribs

Good race Millbot,

Although your goal may have been to run a minute faster, I've never known anyone to complain about a 2 1/2 minute PR. That is major in just about anyone's book, and am sure you are happy. If there had been chip timing you would have gotten another 25 seconds too. I agree that you can go faster yet.

Well done,
Jim

It's fantastic how you are knocking off pr's lately, millbot! Great race. Yup, I also think faster times are in your future.

Must have been a tough crowd to run that kind of time and be 24th AG. But at least you made the "Elite 100" and got some hardware out of it. Good job in the increasing Utah heat!

Thanks all for your comments.

Rose, we hit 75 F at 10 am on the way to a high of 99 F.

Karl, one thing I learned from this race is that I can focus on picking off runners to make it easier to push through the discomfort near the end of the race.

Woohoo for the he-bear PR! I am so hurt that you included a weather report for rose and completely dissed my interest in fashion! <sob>
So I will console myself my teasing; I am sure you will start getting AG awards as soon as you become a true masters runner. Don't you age up soon?
Congratulations on getting faster all of the time!

Nice RR, millbot. You did a great job on your race; I thought the most exciting part was you getting the "elite 100" prize Nice way to finish strong (and 4 places ahead of where you might have otherwise been)!

Gaa! Insanely rich Ilene, please forgive me.

Fashion report for Ilene: White Brooks singlet, red & gray Pearl Izumi shorts, red & white & gray Saucony Grid Tangent 2s. Oh, and white & gray Asics socks. I think the matching colors were good for 10 or 12 seconds.

I barged into B&B just after my 38th birthday. I won't turn 40 until June!

Trivia: I share a birthday (month & day) with a universally loved and admired B&B goddess.

great job millbot. looking at your heart rate it looks like the race would have been negative splits on a flat course... perfect for a half marathon! congrats on your new pr. keep up your great training; just one more race-day suggestion. line up five rows back from the start next time... ask ss for hints about using your elbows to get close to the starting line. it'll save you some effort and nervous energy not to have to dodge so many slow starters.

Great racing from the young pup in the group! We'd fix the lock on the door, but love having you around! We'll just look the other way till, like Tammy, you "age up" and become legit. I agree, the matching duds gotta count for several seconds, especially on the uphill.
Excellent job.

Unreal Millbot! You did GREAT! You relly pushed through as the day warmed up which is very impressive! 1:35 is such an awesome time. You're running so well now, it must feel great. Can't imagine what the cooler fall will bring.

Congratulations on the hugh PR!

Huzzah ding dong dandy, millbot! That's a beaut PR. There was a lot of talk in the van about you and this race. You must be so pleased! Lookit all those sub 7s!

And you really did race it, picking off all those runners, going with the surge.

quote:
I believe I am capable of even faster times.

Yep, yep. If you beat 1:33, though, I'm gonna hafta really get my ... elbows in gear.
