Quality of Life 5 MileIdeal Running Conditions 57 degrees Spectacular Montana Morning This is my favorite local event and I have been looking forward to it all summer. We received nice long sleeved red t-shirts and cool red & gray backpacks for our $15 registration fee. The previous two years I ran the 2 mile event and managed to get AG awards with times of 17:38 and 17:40. Moving up to the 5 mile was a tough decision because I would’ve liked to done the 2 mile again for comparison. When MrChoover opted to do the 5 mile I decided to run with him. The 5 mile course is fast with a net elevation loss of about 550 feet. We were both excited to run the course as we expected to have fast times. My goal was 45 minutes. His was anything under 49. Now the bad news. Yesterday I struggled all day with headache and stomach problems which were still present this morning when I woke up. I took some Tylenol for the headache but the pills promptly came back up if you know what I mean. Ugh. Not a good way to start the morning. So now the question: to race or not to race? I decided to give it a go figuring I’d stop if I had to. I also took some Lomotil for good measure which really seemed to help the stomach problems. MrChoover was dubious about me running but thankfully didn’t pressure me to stay home (sometimes he’s over protective). We arrived at the start with plenty of time and decided to do a warm up before the race which is something we never do even though we know we should. We ran about a mile and that was a good test for my stomach too. I felt better. The course starts on top of the sandstone rims that overlook the city and is basically all downhill except for about a 3 block long hill that hits about the 4 mile point. The last mile to the finish is mostly flat. Fortunately, I felt good once I started running. A young gal I met at the biathlon last month ran with me for a mile or so midway through the race. She wanted to chat a bit but I told her I’d have to wait to talk until the end because I really wanted to achieve my time goal for this race. She finally went on ahead which was a relief. Early in the race, I had passed a woman I went to high school with who beat me in last year’s 2 mile race. I was feeling pretty good about being ahead of her but then she passed me at the end with only about ½ mile to go. Darn. I really tried to stay with her but she continued to pull ahead and ended up beating me by 6 seconds. I found her after the race and thanked her for pulling me across the finish line. The OA winning time for the 5 mile was 24:XX by a local male stud. That guy is all legs and wins just about everything. The AG was broadened this year which meant I was in the 40-49 and they only gave out awards for 1st place. People will probably complain about that. I finished 8th in my AG but not sure out of how many. I’m really glad I didn’t wimp out on this race. We had a great time, were pleased with our efforts, and got to hang with many running club friends on a gorgeous Sat. morning. Doesn’t get much better than that! My Final Stats: Official Time: 42:59 8:36, 8:40, 8:05 (really nice downhill!), 8:39, 8:54 My only other 5 mile race was 50:17 on an all-flat course. MrC’s Stats: Official Time: 43:10 8:48, 8:52, 8:29, 8:33, 8:51 Won't be long before he regularly beats me!
Thanks for reading! ------------------ choover

smashed goals and PRs all over the place!!! great race and perseverance through the morning trauma. I'm thinking you must have pulled Mr C along, since he finished so close behind (behind the operative word, maybe?) Kevin

Nice job under less than ideal conditions. And a PR! A fine day, indeed.

You have done some pretty good training this year so I wasn't surprised to see you smash your time goal. I wouldn't have run this race if I were you, as I am a chicken when it comes to exercise if there is any chance I have some virus. But you seemed to rebound well. Good going for you both. Spareribs

Nice race, really great that you could run with the Mr. You obliterated your goal, and ran really well. I would look forward to a race with a $15 registration fee too. Good job!The engineer also notices that your husbands mile times seem inconsistent withe his total time.

WOW!You two were flying! I am so happy that you were able to feel well enough to run and socialize on your fabulous Montana morning. (You all deserve this kind of morning after all you've been through this summer.) Congratulations to you and mrchoovie (ahem, I think he needs to write his "his" story and blend it with your "hers" story... you two are SO cute together!)

The discussion about DH's split times is interesting. The final time on his Garmin was 43:37 but he also thought he was farther behind me than 11 seconds. So the finish line timers must've been off a tad. My Garmin said 43:09 but I didn't hit the stop until a few steps over the finish. Guess that's what happens when you don't have chip timing. Thanks for pointing that out and for the other comments as well.

Most excellent! I can't imagine running that well when I've been sick. You're one tough cookie - but I suspect you're right and Mr. Choover is going to be beating you soon. WTG! ------------------ My Profile "I think I can, I think I can"

Way to go in crushing that goal! Now you've got a good base time to compare to next year...and you'll be feeling better then, too. Congrats.

Choovie, glad to see you had such a good PR run and a good time as well! Beating DH was probably a bonus on top of that. It's too bad you weren't feeling too well going into it, but it obviously all turned out OK at the finish. Now you've got to train just a little harder to make sure you stay the fastest in the family. ------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

Smashing your goal like that is impressive, that you did it not feeling well even more so. DH is really improving quickly! Time for you both to consider faster goals? You were on pace for something like a 53 minute 10K, and I would guess you are ready to blow away your HM PR. Well done to you both.Mark

Congratulations to the Choovers..WooHoo!You had better enjoy your success because it does indeed seem that before long Mr. Choovie will probably be cruising on by and finish ahead of you. Hey if it were me I really wouldn't mind it if my DW were to beat me in a race if I could just get her to run with me! (Well OK I guess that's stretching it a bit, I would mind but just a little!) You should both be very pleased with your running, keep up the good work, all that training is really paying off. ------------------ My User Profile "Keep on Running" Bob

Choover, you were spectacular, especially since you didn't feel good the day before and morning of the race. MrChoover must be an awfully nice guy to let you finish just ahead of him. Congratulations on a monster PR.TomS ------------------ My Profile
