It occurred to me that you can tell something about a site’s culture by the “rules” they have. Kickrunner’s self-described “simple rules” run 440 words and include: "If you're here and plan on staying, then - it IS your home. We're not exclusive - we don't 'demand' allegiance; nor is there any 'kool-aid' for you to drink! We aren't here to compete with or be 'better than' any of the other forums . We're all just like restaurants - each having their own menu and atmosphere. Sometimes you feel like a full course meal with a small jazz band; other times you're ready for beer, wings, and Rock and Roll! BOTH are GOOD!!! Our Moderators: We have moderators, but their real job is to make sure the grass is cut, the cat is put out at night, and there's beer in the fridges.... We don't have "thought" Police, and we don't ban people. We DEPEND on each other to simply be civil and respectful. When that isn't possible, then the moderators get distracted and then the beer inventory goes down. Butt slapping is ok, debates are fine - just try to keep the sticks in the yard and there's way too much glass around here to throw stones – treat posters on line as you would in public and we’ll always have ENOUGH BEER! Kickrunners.com will be what the kickrunners make it.. and so far – our members have made it a very nice place to be!! So, if you agree to these simple rules, then check "YES" and Welcome Home!!" In contrast, Active.com’s “terms of service” runs 5,462 words including: These Terms of Use shall apply to all websites owned and/or operated by the Active Network, Inc., including without limitation the website on which these Terms of Use are posted and Active’s parents, subsidiary and/or affiliate entities whether or not referred to directly as Active or The Active Network, Inc. Active maintains this and other websites as a service to its customers. By accessing and/or using the web sites owned, operated and/or maintained by Active (the "Active Sites"), you are expressly agreeing to comply with and be bound by the following Terms of Use and Active’s Privacy Policy separately provided, as well as all applicable laws and regulations. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THESE TERMS OF USE, YOU ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO USE THE ACTIVE SITES AND MUST NOT ACCESS OR USE THEM. Active may revise and update these Terms of Use at any time; please periodically review them, because your continued usage of the Active Sites indicates your agreement with any such changes. You further understand and agree that any updates, enhancements or added features of any Active Sites or services shall be made part of these Terms of Use. Additionally, certain of the Active Sites may be subject to registration, processing and handling fees and/or subject to additional terms of use (e.g. eteamz.com). You are responsible for promptly paying those fees to insure your right to access the associated Active Sites and/or services. 1. Copyright. Ownership. All content included on the Active Sites, such as text, graphics, logos, button icons, images, audio clips and software, as well as the compilation of any of the foregoing (meaning the collection, arrangement and assembly), are the property of Active or its content suppliers and protected by U.S. and international copyright laws. You acknowledge and agree that Content contained in sponsor advertisements or information presented to you through the Active Sites or by advertisers is protected by copyrights, trademarks, service marks, patents or other proprietary rights and laws. Except as expressly authorized by Active or such advertisers, you agree not to modify, rent, lease, loan, sell, distribute or create derivative works based on the Active Sites, services, products or software, in whole or in part. At this point my eyes glazed over and I couldn’t read the remaining 5,000+ words.

So far, am delighted with what I see at Kick. Fast and lean interface, with all the forum functionality I've been hoping for from this place for a long time.I understand Roch's concerns: it's easy to fracture a group this size and lose the precious community we have. I've felt a faint hint of that when I made the WikiChat available. On the one hand, it empowered a number of people who just couldn't make IRC go. On the other hand, it's created a lot of confusion. I sometimes with I'd never posted the stupid thing. The Newbie 30-somethings decamped to Kick a month or so back, with greta success. Maybe we need to strike a committee to develop terms of reference for a project charter to establish a means of evalutating the pros and cons of each of the migration options, and then establish meetings and weekly status reports. Or maybe we don't need to behave like most of my clients these days I bet we can figure it out and everything will be Just Fine. ------------------ Mustang Sally Boomers and Beyond wiki

About a 1/3 of our large group has already signed up and test drove the Masters thread set up for us. Thank you. Way down at the bottom there is a thread for 50's. Hasn't been real active yet but reading it reminds me of our group when we digress into our daily discussions and jokes. ksrunr

I think that if and when we needed a separate forum they would probably make us one. Can't expect them to make something they don't need. The 30's seem to be the only ones using that running club area right now. But I think I said all this before, I am doing the Groundhog day thing again

Hi all - Just to let you know where Kickrunners came from - A couple of people commented that they hadn't heard of it before. Well, Kickrunners.com, as the name implies, eminated from the minds of a number of runners (and ex-runners and friends) who used to frequent the Kick! site, which most will recall was the pre-cursor of Cool Running. We date back to the 1990's, yep some of us have been around THAT long, and as Cool Running grew into the beamoth it is today, many of us had lost contact on a daily basis, as threads were swallowed up with multitudes of posts etc... We still had emails, and one of the gang, Satfix by handle, had the idea to develop a small community for old friends, and invited us in. The Kickrunners concept grew by invite as we ironed out the bugs and developed the site, and eventually Rich, and the community, felt the time was right to open the site out to the world - And the rest, as they say, is history. All will be welcome, and as the site is run by runners, for runners, of ALL abilities, and none, then all comments are welcome. It isn't a commercial venture, so don't expect miracles, but it is run professionally, and aims to cater for everyone. Hope this helps, and look forward to making new friends, and renewing old ones - See you soon, Liam ------------------ My Blog

hee hee - I'm laughing because methinks Active.com's purchase of Cool Running might came back to bite them in the-you-know-where. I think people are going to bail out in a mass exodus! hee-hee.

I registered at Kickrunners last night. It will take some getting use to.I think you may be correct about active getting bit Labduck. Also, I read over at kickrunners that we will be able to import our cr running logs ! (when they have a log - sometime the end of summer) [This message has been edited by anachrotech (edited Aug-15-2007).]

thanks Hally, I was wondering about this. one "masters" thread wouldn't even come close to replacing what we have now. repeating again what I said, I'd rather we didn't fragment, or get lost at sea. I'm with Tammy, I don't have enough time to do everything I'd like to here, much less on different boards. I signed up over there just to be ready (same name, but if you come up with something better Kirsten, let me know!! I hate the 9 part. but had to have 3 digits. ) ( thought about deegee, thanks to SS, but it always reminds me of the bee gees. a little goes a long way)

Jura, sorry for the delay in getting you activated. I do a lot of traveling in my job and its hard to get them done in a timely manner when I am out on the road. (I have to do them from my phone) You should be good to go now. Let me know if you cant login now. For anyone else, please be patient with me. Sometimes it takes longer than others for me to get the new member activations done due to my "real job" (dang work, always gettin' in the way! ) If for some reason, you still cant get in within a day or so of registering, (that would be the longest it would ever take me, and usually it will happen much quicker than that) email me at sierra@kickrunners.com and I will look into it. Thanks for your patience!

I couldn't figure out what this thread was about but with so many posts so quickly spilling into several pages, I looked at the several explanatory hot links but just got more frustrated and still couldn't figure out what is so interesting except that active was going to do the running logs but everyone seems to be abandoning CR even though it seems like losing the B&B Board to Active forums is more crying wolf for the time being so I'm stayin' until the ship goes down.unfortunately, maybe I need a new computer but I'll probably go down with the ship too as, unlike the 15-20 B&B threads I can see on a single screen and being able to scroll through a thread's posts pretty fast, only a couple of kick messages are visible at one time on the screen as it seems each poster's sign-ins, photos and caricatures, etc. are so big on my computer seeming to make it very hard to skim at all let alone find different subject matter threads that are so easy to see on the B&B forum. I hope when you all leave, ilene can keep the Intrepid over on CR as long as possible and vista's destination marathons materialize so we can keep meeting each other at races and she'll get to keep her hot links to the rr's (even if they are on kick) I like to read (sorry for not posting much except locals though). I'll miss jura's weekly planner to give me the incentive to do more than just weekend running (well, sometimes anyway), chances to pop in-and-out of the 40/40 whenever I get to do a Sunday half and Saturday marathon or vice versa, and tramps'monthly and the boomies so much. Oddly enough, contrary to labduck's experience with Active, when I wasn't listed in last year's Portland Marathon and they demanded I pay a late registration fee, a certain guardian angel goddess queen comment on her similar registration helped me remember I'd registered on line through Active so I was able to get proof of registration to avoid having to pay double.
