One thing about Fred, he's consistent...

Jim, I took that post to heart when it first appeared and have been mindful of it ever since.

Thanks all for the well wishes, I should be fine Sunday. If not, I'll be an ugly ___ . You fill in the blank...

The last paragraph in Jim's post is the sole reason why I am dead set against the Pfitz plan. How can Pfitz know how many miles and how fast some runner can or should run every day through a 16 week schedule? Spareribs

Schedules can be useful, providing that you use them as a blueprint rather than something carved in stone. Periodically I get them from Tinman, but they do not have day-to-day precision. The weekly format is 2 key workouts with descriptions, a long run, and a mileage target for the week. Then it's a matter of buidling your mileage around the key workouts as you see fit. What days you do them on isn't crtical, as long as you space them sensibly. If you are a few miles under or over on mileage target it's ok.

Did someone say "carved in stone"? Those are the exact words I use.

As a beginner, I need something carved in stone each week. Expert input is appreciated and I will always follow it. I don't know what I don't know. I've felt pretty good most days. Maybe I need to push more to know how far I can go before I reach sore.

This is a very interesting read for me.

Liz, with the right help, anyone can do what I am doing.

Bob, good luck with your knee, the NY marathon is next for you, right?

Quote: "The optimum quantity of running is, then, the largest amount which fails to produce these symptoms. In practice, the amount varies from day to day, and the experienced runner learns to “feel in this bones” the appropriate training for that moment."

This is where I get in trouble and what seperates experienced runners from someone like me.

Last week, with one eye on the half marathon coming up this weekend and one on the marathon at the end of the month, I ran ok training for a marathon, but probably too much for getting ready to race.

Live and learn...

Thu - 7 easy miles on grass loop at mid day - 90 when I finished. It's our turn to face the heat.

Fri - 8 more on the grass at noon - 88 at finish

Trying to get acclimated to racing in Davis on Monday. It's 100 there at this moment. I'm leaning more and more towards the 5k rather than the 10. No way can I ran under 40 minutes in this heat, and there's really no other incentive for me to race that distance except to prove to myself I can do it again.

Take care of that knee, Bob. You just popped a good one in your last 5k. This is no time to get hurt.

It's good for the discipline to follow a plan, and if the plan is a good one it will make you a better runner. However, I would try to let go of that carved in stone mindset. For example, you are scheduled to run a hard workout on the track tomorrow, but when you get there your legs are still sore from a hill workout you did 2-3 days ago. DON'T do the track workout no matter what your schedule says. Just jog a few slow miles instead. Personally, I much prefer this approach to the extremes of running a hard workout that we're not ready for or taking the day off completely.

There is no training variable that is more important than being consistent. If we are constantly having setbacks we can't be consistent. Right? Suppose you go ahead with that workout in the example and manage to get through it without anything terrible happening. And then the next morning comes. Your legs are so sore that your knees buckle when you to try to stand up after crawling out of bed. So you take 2-3 days off and it takes another few days after that (if you are lucky) before you are ready to go fast again. Who hasn't done this? I know that I sure have. Not very consistent and not the best way to improve.

Okay, time to get off the soapbox and see if I can go fetch myself a good case of sunstroke.

C'mon, Fred.

I have it written in stone that I can't run until you start the new month.

It was cast in stone that I run 15 miles with 12 miles at MP this morning. But with the H&H, I made a major adjustment and ran 14 miles with 12 at MP.

The MP's ranged from 8:19 to 8:34 with most being in the 8:25 to 8:30 range. Pfitz wants MP to feel "easy" which I can understand. But with the H&H, it wasn't easy, but I lived to tell about it. I'll take this one this time of year anytime.
