Short version: hot & hilly 10K on July 4, 21st/81 in AG hot & hilly sprint tri today, 9th/14 in AG On my birthday (Weds) I ate my oatmeal and lined up with 4500 of my closest buddies, and....waited some more. The 10K was 17 minutes late. Took 1:30 to get to the start line (no chip timing). Like the nice, good girl I am, I lined up between the 9mpm and 8 mpm pace signs, but it was clear that others simply ignored this helpful system. Leapfrogged and elbowed my way up the 1-mile killer hill. More of the same on the quad-wrecking downhill 1.5 miles. By mile 3 I was exhausted and demoralized, because the walkers (doing a shorter course) had merged onto the course and I had to maneuver around many of them, too. "Walkers stay to the left of the yellow line" was my plea, but always too late... I kept going. Oh, it was hot; like, 70 degrees. I stopped and drank an entire (full!) cup of water at mile 3. That was nice. I kept on, disobeying the "WALK!" voices in my head. And ended up with another course PR; 54:19 watch time. I had to police the crowd in the finish chute, too. One woman barrelled past me after the finish line and I got her back in line....(ahem). 2 days to rest on delayed sore legs... then... A triathlon! Unlike the troika of small town tris I chose this Spring, this one was a NW tri championships series race...I knew I was toast. Plus, I was riding a roadbike for the first time and am pretty shaky (fell over twice in my first month of riding it). Having read mariposai's thread on preparation for the heat, I was as full as an engorged tick and ready for hot sun. Plus, I ate my oatmeal this morning, too. Swim Portion: Dreadful! Simply dreadful! In the half mile swim portion, I was 226th out of 233. Any way you calculate... that's bad! I started on the far right of the crowd at the shore. That was a mistake: Counter-clockwise race, and I have a strong tendency to drift to the right. I had a hard time seeing buoy #1 and I think I did a huge circle, not a triangle... Transition 1: Eh, OK. The bag balm seemed to help a bit in getting my wetsuit off my voluptuous calves and yankles. Still, 4 minutes -- that's pretty long. Bike Portion: OK. Total hills! Up, down, for 12.5 miles! Real knee-torquers. I used every gear in my arsenal. Had technical difficulties shifting here & there. Could have pushed it more, had I been more competent on bike handling. 188th/233 for the bike portion. Passed several 30-something women. Transition 2: Fine! Run Portion: Beautiful! Again, very hilly, no flats, and 75 degrees. At mile 2 or so, during a gentle uphill, I started blissing out -- I felt strong, happy, glad to be alive. It was really something! Finished this hilly 5K in 26:12, which is durn good considering that my best 5K ever was 24:57. 110th/233 for the run portion (yes, I passed a lot of people, again a lot of 30-something women). So, it's not like I burned up the course, but I've set a good benchmark for next year. I'm happy! ETA: fashion report 7/04: black skirt, blue top, Air Max Motos with blue accents, hair in barrette with stylish humidity-induced curls. 7/07: ProMotion black wetsuit with lime green accents, TYR navy trisuit, Nike Zoom Elite with fast shoelaces. Tourism report Wine country at sunrise....beautiful! On the way back, saw H. Hughes' Spruce Goose at the Evergreen Aviation Museum, and later, a really cool dust devil with wafts of straw floating about in a lazy circular pattern....

Great Job Econo.Have to laugh about 70 degrees being hot. Most folks expect to be at least 10 percent slower running in a tri, than they would if they just ran a road race. You are tired from the swim and the bike, and your legs feel funny running the first half mile after you get off a bike.

Wait! If I calculate it this way... You swam faster than all of us who didn't even tri.... Then... it is not so dreadful. Nice racing, Econo! Well done.

Cash, I did a great brick workout last weekend that I think did wonders for the heavy legs problem... 6 mile bike + 1 mile run at 5K pace; repeat... Killer, but just what I needed. ETA it was aggravating to pass all those 30-something women, who started in a wave before me, because they are not in my AG and therefore are irrelevant! OK, I admit, it was nice to pass "young 'uns." [This message has been edited by Econo (edited Jul-07-2007).]

Wow econo - greta racing. I know what you mean about the swimming. I'd have been either 1 ahead or 1 behind ya. I remember a TV show called "30 Something" Maybe we could have a remake with econo as the star! What a crowded 10K you ran. Not letting that woman ahead in the chute; fierce grrr!Mcsolar - behave yourself! ksrunr

Glad you are elbowing adults out of the way, and not kids any more. You are getting faster at all events all the time. Very nice job. See you in two weeks. Spareribs

Econo,It's always a pleasure to read your reports. You are learning from every triathlon. Surely you would do better in the swim part of this race, especially, if you had it to do over. As Ribs said, you are getting faster in all areas--swim, bike, run. I admire your courage in trying--tri-ing?--multisport competitions. Running is enough for me, right now, anyway. Now get back in the gym and build some muscle, as you continue developing your multisport skills. Remember: light weights, high reps. Squats. Leg presses. Leg curls. Lat pulldowns (for shoulders, back, and core stabilizers). Pushups, situps, pullups. Dumbell curls. Go get 'em, tri-grrl. Dark Horse ------------------ I'm a dark horse, running on a dark race course

Good racing! I would have been 233rd in the swim portion. I just hope you don't push me out of the way. See you soon. We leave Tuesday for the long drive.------------------ My Profile

As you said, this was a NW Tri Championships Race!!! Fierce competition at every level and you held your own. You learned a lot and shoot, look where you are compared to last year! Plus, next 'small town' race you pick, you've been to the mountaintop and know how to kick @ss NW Tri-style. Nice PR on the B2B. You don't think you tackled too much in one week, do you? Nah, I don't either. glidegal

Yeah, Econo! That's awesome! I like how you work to enforce the course rules on your 10k. I try that too, but usually just get blank looks from the offending parties. Your tri's are impressive, and I agree next one you do on local scale will be awesome! good job holding your own with the championship crowd! ------------------ evanflein

This time of year, 70F is cold. Congratulations on both races. Especially the TRI. Running after the bike takes getting used to. Thanks for sharing.------------------ Never regret anything that made you smile, SteveP My User Profile

I know the newfangled spelling is "Boudica" but I learned it "Boadicea" and that's the way I like it. None of you cares but I had to get this off my chest.Dark Horse ------------------ I'm a dark horse, running on a dark race course

I'm sure two handlers are better than one so I volunteer to assist MC in assisting you. You are racing so well Econo! So are you teaching a tri class in the Fall? Congrats on your excellent double.Skip

What a tri-athlete you are becoming, Econo! And a double RR on top of that. I'll be looking forward to see how you do on your next couple of outings.Apparently, I also missed Boudicea becoming Boudica, but as usual the professor is always right. Here's a quote from Wikipedia on her appearance: 'Dio says that she was "possessed of greater intelligence than often belongs to women", that she was tall, had long red hair down to her hips, a harsh voice and a piercing glare, and habitually wore a large golden necklace (perhaps a torc), a many-coloured tunic and a thick cloak fastened by a brooch.' Does this bear any resemblance? ------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner [This message has been edited by rochrunner (edited Jul-08-2007).]

I like this description!!! As for your double this week -- WOW!!! I have a lot of friends that do tris -- I tell them they are crazy. Secretly (don't let them find out), I respect them immensely!!! Sounds like you saved the best for last and smoked people during the run. Congraulations!!! BTW -- what's bag balm?

Yeah, Rosy, the old man at Bi-Mart got a funny look on his face when I asked where to find it. He says "you asked the right man -- I'm an old farmer!"Horse of Darkness, I like the original spelling better -- and rochrunner; how cool is that description! I look like that when I am enforcing racecourse etiquette. Pro, I looked up last year's stats -- I woulda placed a lot higher in my AG. I guess all the fast women showed up this year. Time for me to learn to swim, eh?

Using Bag Balm was an udderly great idea! Hey, you weren't last in the swim and somebody has to be last. Congratulations, I really admire you for doing triathlons too. Was the swim in the ocean? You are truly awesome, you didn't fall over on the bike portion and you got an excellent finish time. Great job!

Econo, One clear advantage to the old spelling: "Boadicea" looks and sounds more like "bodacious," which she certainly was. Like you when someone cuts the line. Heck, like you anytime. Dark Horse ------------------ I'm a dark horse, running on a dark race course

You're a Super Star! Don't worry about the roadbike issues, you'll sort it out. I'm still laughing about the Bag Balm....does it leave a residue? (hee). arf
