For those of you that are trail runners, my hat is off to you. In the past, other than some training runs, the only trail running I did was a 12.5 relay -- the course today was that course on steroids -- YIKES!!!

Short version -- went in looking to do a long run as I knew that I was going to set a mileage record this week (first week over 80). Went out fairly comfortably, but it was downhill and I started feeling decent -- ending up running by HR and getting 1st place in the Masters division!

Slightly longer version -- first the course:

Fashion report -- back to MN RED wear except I ran without a shirt. I think I have a nice tan line from the HRM...

Lots of single track areas and the footing was pretty iffy in spots. For the most part, I was running by heart rate. As long as my HR was below 160, I would see if I could catch anyone ahead of me. Once I cracked 160 (always on hills), I would walk until it got back down to 155 -- this occured 4 or 5 times.

Felt fairly good until the last aid station. At this point, had about 5k of the most technical section of the course. I gave a bit of time back here and also caught a bad spot that sent chills up my back. As I was running downhill through a single track prairie area, my right foot landed in a hole (from a horse walking through there?) and I let out a loud grunt. At this point, I had been battling another runner for a mile or so. Once he heard the grunt, he made his move and I had nothing to cover it with. Oh well. He's the only person that passed me and stayed in front of me all day.

Was VERY happy with the result! the person that usually wins the master division had moved to super masters division -- which allowed me to take home a VERY nice plaque!

If anyone is interested -- here's the splits and the HR. Compare them with the course profile from above.

HRM acting up for the first few miles...

Splits:
7:32 @ 162
7:45 @ 163
7:55 @ 157
7:56 @ 154
7:48 @ 153
7:00 @ 153
8:00 @ 157 (a one mile climb!)
6:36 @ 157 (riding a NICE downill)
8:42 @ 157
7:08 @ 155
7:09 @ 154
8:28 @ 155
7:37 @ 154
9:41 @ 154
9:01 @ 154
3:33 @ 160 (7:00/mi.)

Thanks for reading!!!

hermosa, you had quite a day. That sounds like a tough trail race but you got 1st masters and a weekly mileage PR. Congrats.

Good job Rob! Nice week too! I think you should run Lumberjack as a run through on that mileage so I have a chance.

It's not bad enough you kick everyone's butt on the roads, now you are taking to the trails. I hate those trail runners. They are strong and tough, and always finish with a big smile like they just had the best time of their lives. I would be cursing and complaining about rocks, tree roots and the like. Heck of an event. Well done. Great report. Spareribs

You seem to kick @$$ at the long races as well. Wow! We have a 15K trail run up here as well. No aid stations. Tough.

An 80+ weekly mileage PR, 25K trail run w/ a 1st Masters - you are quite the machine Rob. Well done. (Hey I caught that walking part in there! - I'm taking that as permission for an upcoming trail run I am doing.)

Team Work -- had to run with one of our MN RED runners for a bit who was having a bit of a tough time with the heat. This serves as my fashion report (note the HRM strap has been removed):

This is how MN RED rehydrates after a race (while waiting for others to finish):

That would be a 22oz Fat Tire Ale in my hand. YUMMY!

Nice run on a challenging course, great report, especially like the picture of you with the beer---can taste it from here. Nothing like a little carbo load after a long run or a race. Well deserved.

hermosaboy,

Great race, especially after a week of record high mileage. Sorry I couldn't view the photos--my military computer screened 'em out. Must be nekkid wimmen in the background or something. Or maybe it's your beer: we aren't allowed to drink here in Kosovo.

Wow, that's a seriously tough course. Greta job on your "long run". Congratulations on winning the Masters division. I hope your ankle is OK -- I hate that feeling.

Hubba hubba!! I mean, uh, great running, hermosaboy!
I am so glad you didn't twist your ankle or anything.
I also think you can forego those black compression shorts under your red shorts and not risk thigh chafe, the red shorts look long enough.
Congratulations!

It was painful -- running back down one of those nasty hills and knowing that I would have to run back up it.

But there's no "I" in team.

Wowza! Excellent time on a trail race Rob...you are built for it, ever notice that about the trail runners vs. the road marathoners? Trail runners are far more muscular. I think you should definitely consider doing some shirtless trail runs in Canada.

Mosquitos didn't hit until the evening when I had my feet up in bed!

Ony caught 3 bugs in my mouth the whole time -- that's pretty good!
