July 4th,Volkslaufe is a yearly tradition for me since i started running 6 years ago. Volkslaufe, or The people race, in German is in it's 31 year in Frankenmuth, Little Baviria, in the thumb of Michigan. Frankenmuth is famous for their chicken dinners. I normally run the the 10 k at this race because it is run the country side with very little shade and is usually very hot and humid.. This year I had planned on running the 10k as usual but work got in the way, so Iwas not able3 tro get to the race in time. The 10k startted at 8:00, while the 20k starts at 8:10, and the 5k started at 10:00,so I decided to do the 5k.
The race starts at the bottom of a hill which rises about 75 feet at the very beginning of the race. Over the next 1/2 mile you climb 2 other gradual hills before making a hair pin turn. Over the next 1/2 mile you cross a covered wooden bridge which leads you to the downtown area of shops and restaraunts. From their we ran along the Cass River for a 1/4 mile and then through a residential area to the 2 mile mark. from their we return across the bridge and back to the park where we began.

Now my race, the race started about 5 min. early so i got caught at the back of the pack not all bad since I tend to go fast the first mile, the problem was with 750 runners and 350 walkers I had alot of traffic to get through. The day had been perfect for good times with a little drizzle and cool temps for the early races, For the 5k the rain quit so humidity was high. For the first mile I did what I call shoot and scoot, run hard for 20 feet slow down wait for an opening repeating this for almost a mile. The mile marks are km instead and not well marked. So I have no splits for the race, but my last mile was much better than usual pulling away from one of my high school runners, he is 22 now, the last 1/2 mile of the race. My final time was 23;48 placing 16 out of 44 runnersin my AG.
All total for the 3 races 2000 runners ran on our Nations Birthday in Frankenmuth Michigan, I highly recommend all you boomers come and visit little Bavaria, and run the peoples Race.

Das Schoot und Skoot ist ja sehr gut!

Yeeesh, I had to weave, dart, and "sorry" my way through crowds of people yesterday in a race; I sympathize! You did well despite!

I think your time was impressive despite dodging around people in a crowded race.

As for your town being known for chicken dinners, I am not so sure. A few years ago I found myself up your way and my route to the airport took me through Frankenmuth. I distinctly recall that 9,000 people in Michigan told me, "if you have time, stop in the Christmas store." No one told me to get a chicken dinner. Is that store still in business?

Still, despite this distraction regarding the Christmas store, you ran a very nice race. Great report. Spareribs

I agree with Spareribs........it is the Christmas shop that I remember about Frankenmuth, as well as some place that made omelet's to order as you wished. I STILL remember the taste of the one I asked them to make. Yum.

Sounds like an excellent time since you had to "shoot and scoot" for the first third of the race. Good job.

Thanks for a good RR and for reminding me of a neat area of Michigan.

My mum used to run this race in the mid-late 70s when she was just starting running. I have to think she must have been in on the inaugural race, if my math is right. I never knew about the chicken dinners: we always bugged our parents to pull off I-75 to go to (Bronner's?) Christmas store.

Nice RR, and WTG on a good time considering the crowd. It sounds like you spurred quite a few memories among CR Boomers, too.

Nice run, Derrick!

So are you a Zehnder's guy or more of a Bavarian Inn person? I guess it doesn't matter since the same family owns both, but people tend to mostly go to one or the other. Back about 40 years ago (has it been that long??), when I was a student at GMI in Flint, the guys I roomed with and I would go up there once in a while on a Sunday afternoon for dinner. At that age, the family-style, all-you-can-eat dinners were a really good deal since we could all pack down a lot of food. One of my favorite memories from college days...

Bronners is the Xmas store and it still exists, my son works next door as a life guard. I am Zender's guy because my son gets big discount.
By the way Kyle Baker won race in14:52 he was a Hanson runner at one timer, may still be. See Runners World this month.

Nice race, in spite of the shoot and scoot, dshclio. The couple of trips over the wooden, covered, bridge sound neat to me. Even though I like both Zehnders and the Bavarian Inn, I guess we get to Zehnder's on most of our visits. Congratulations.
