To do my part, I picked a local small town race (folks who asked, Where are you racing, when I said La Palma, all laughed and said where’s that?”) Well, the little City of LaPalma put on one heck of an event complete with t-shirts, timing chips (well a mat at the finish line anyway), popsicles and a pancake breakfast afterwards.  I wore my red, white and blue flag shorts and a white tank top over a white sports bra, a white visor, while a blue scrunchy restraining my thick luxurious ponytail, white and blue Brooks shoes with white anklet socks. Besides some of my running club attending, I also got to meet up with huskydon which is a hugh plus!! After nervously warming up for about 45 minutes, I went to the starting line for the 10K. They started us, about 100 10K runners, .1 mile back up the road from the 5K walk/run start, but the announcements, Star Spangled Banner singing were all up by the 5K start. The horn blasted and we were off! The course was pretty much a big square loop through the community, once for the 5K and twice for the 10K, and it was flatter than a pancake! Although I quickly realized that there were not enough trees in that town and not a hint of shade, 2 water stations and a misting station made it bearable though. At the end of the first loop they directed the 5K finishers to the mat and sent us 10K runners around it, and I glanced at the clock and was horrified to see my time. Realizing I needed to pick it up, I gritted my teeth and made it around the second loop faster than the first. I missed my 10K PR by 16 seconds, but I ran the best 10K so far this year for me. The kids at the water stations and on each corner cheering were enthusiastic and adorable! Afterwards, the pancake breakfast put on by the Kiwanis club was delicious! We got to sit and eat our pancakes in the park and watch the awards ceremony, which was really cool; each age group placer got a sports bag with their place win on it and their hand shook by all the city council members and their picture taken. Huskydon stayed to cheer for me and I felt like a sparkler. Ilene, as always, a standard setting report. It sounds like it was a delightful race and your attire certainly added to the atmosphere of the holiday. I am so excited to add that I have red white and blue flag shorts! Now I know I can really wear them and be proud.

Another fun RR from you lleneforward.Sounds like you did pretty well on that second 5K if you had to make up time in heat and came that close to a PR. Good for you. Being the queen of the fashion report, I always notice what you wear and was pleased to see you were in keeping with the holiday attire. Ilene – Hey, I know where La Palma is! No wait, maybe that was La Palma Avenue. Hmmm, it’s been 10 years since I lived in So. Cal., so my memory is a little hazy.Fashion fool that I am, do you know that it never even occurred to me to wear red, white and blue yesterday? Of course, I don’t actually own any red running stuff anyway (I look really bad in red), but the flag shorts sound very kewl. Great job on the negative splits, and coming within 16 seconds of your PR! Sounds like a fun race, and with the pancake breakfast and a Huskydon to cheer you on, an all-around great time. Thanks for another great race report!

Errrghhh, you know very well what Vista meant, I am the queen and he is one of my many admirers!  And yes, I got 1st place in my division. Yay! (small races are the best!)

fashion, schmashion--- it's the historical inclusions on some of your reports that I love. Nice job on the best 10K in 2007 and negative split loops. Very nice of La Palma to choose pancakes for their theme: it's a breakfast item, no, wait, it's a course elevation. glidegal

llene,It was a supreme pleasure, as always, to see you again. Your patriotic outfit was quite a crowd pleaser. I was very impressed by your negative splits and your near PR. That was quite a feat with the heat, sunshine, and temperature that seemed to go up every mile. And yet another AG win to boot. Very nice. Congratulations!
