My Sauvie Island experience was not quite the same as labduckdoodle’s. Well, it was until mile 10 when I utterly bonked. That has never happened to me and I have a new found respect for that piddly 4 letter word. Diagnosis: ran too fast up front; nothing in reserve for the end. Note to self: just because you CAN, doesn’t mean you SHOULD.I felt like I was taking it easy although I was running in the 8s and 9s which still amazes me, frankly. But I felt strong and not going all out by any means. At the 10K I hit a PR of 54:50 and I was definitely on track for a HM PR (<1:59:57) and I couldn’t believe it. I was also given a new iPod a few weeks back which I was thrilled to debut in this race, so I think having tunes was a major factor in my juju. I NEVER wear music in a race, but knowing I was going to be running alone and needed some motivation, I loaded the little guy and moved into surround sound when the horn went off. Dare I admit the smug joy of not hearing any of those meaningless conversations that you do not want to be part of anyway? Cruised right along until Mile 9 which had a new loop through someone’s farm and barn area—seriously, we ran past their sheds full of farm machinery, fruit bins and transient workers who had hit the jackpot watching us scantily clad heifers running past. That's when the wheels fell off. My race: Mile 1: Born in the USA Mile 2: Take it Easy Mile 3: All She Wants to do is Dance Mile 4: Life in the Fast Lane Mile 5: Middle of the Road Mile 6: Running Down A Dream Mile 7: Stayin’ Alive Mile 8: Blister in the Sun Mile 9: Old MacDonald Had a Farm Mile 10: The Wall Mile 11: Running on Empty Mile 12: (I will walk) 500 miles Mile 13: The Long and Winding Road glidegal

What a lesson learned! You put a smile on my face when I read "scantily clad heifers" Ha ha! I doubt a heifer could run a 54:50 10K! (very nice) (wagging finger) No no no! No tunage during a race... You can put on your game face to avoid the conversations... scares 'em and you're good to go! (But I did enjoy the miles in music)

glidegal,Good job anyway. I strongly suspect you were a hapless victim of the little-known Law of Conservation of Sproinkiness. Labduck hogged the sproinkiness to himself, leaving far too little for you. I suggest contacting the race director to ask that he deduct several minutes from your time and add them to Labduck's. This is obviously the most equitable solution. Your fan, Dark Horse ------------------ I'm a dark horse, running on a dark race course

DH-- what would I do without my Kosovo Kontingent? Actually, the other little known LOCS is "The total quantity of sproinkiness available in the universe is a fixed amount and never any more or less." With so many good runs yesterday, it wasn't just labduck... Already wrote the Race Director, my claim was denied. Apparently, PRs trump whining. glidegal

If you only knew how many times I looked for this yesterday! You had me on the edge of my seat. Too bad mile 9 wasn't like that old Pepsi commercial. Remember that one? Even if it wasn't faster, the scenery would have been better and you wouldn't have been looking at Jack's pot.Congratulations on the 10K PR and your note to self. I have a purple marker if you need to put words in your shoes! Loved reading this report and the music by the miles was a hit.

An excellent race all the same! Any race you can do so fast and meet with Labduck has got to be a highlight. I love your happy music, and if you keep the volume low and only one plug in your ear....<ducking and running away from the pile on>....it should be okay. Maybe it is your prerace or during race nutrition? 90 minutes is a good time to take a gu. That can prevent that 'bonk' feeling. Congratulations and good luck with your upcoming races!

I think a lot of good news came out of this. You can run at a sustained strong pace for 9-10 miles, so you know what work you have to do yet and it's still early. Sometimes a race is good news based on what you learned and realize what you can do. Heck of a tenK split and some real progress for you. Also, I understand it was warm from LD's report. If that is so, heat will get you toward the later part of a long race like that. Nice job. Spareribs

This report is hilarious! I'm sorry you bonked, Fabulous Glider Gal, but from my selfish perspective, your RR was a hoot!

I enjoyed your musical report glidegal. The best song you listed is mile 3. You ran a good race too! Now you are wrong about a limited amount of sproinkiness in the universe. It is unlimited; you just have to earn it and use it carefully. Sometimes it's good to run a race too hard at first imho. Next time you run a half you will be able to hold the pace even further. And eventually you will carry it all the way thru to the end and it will feel effortless. ksrunr

Nice RR. No comment on the tunage, pro or con. Your bonk could have been due to going out too fast, but nutrition and hydration could have contributed too. Hard to know, since you didn't mention what you did about those things. I certainly think you should have taken in some carbos along the way for a race that long. Good job anyway, and one to learn from.------------------ Fortunate--a volleyballer with a running problem Profile [This message has been edited by Fortunate One (edited Jul-05-2007).]

Glidegal - I believe that the 1st law of thermodynamisproink states that sproinkiness is never gained or lost, it simply changes form. That means that if you run too close to other runners, your sproink will leak onto them. Prolly what happened here. ------------------ Holly

Oh glidegal, what an hilarious report! That stoopid detour through the pumpkin patch farm around mile 9 took a LOT of people out of their rhythm. Then around mile 10, we entered the bonk zone. I've talked to three other people who ran their personal worst out there that day, and they all died around 10. And the worst part is they didn't know why! Thanks for letting me scarf down your strawberry shortcake. You're a good racing pal.

You are hilarious, GlideGroovy. I have to say, though, I get a little misty thinking how far you've come in such a short time. You are one tough -- but funny -- cookie.Or is that shortcake? WHATevah! You rawk, gg! That PR is on its way. ("Middle of the Road" -- one of my faves.)

(and then stephen jobs will call and my quiet life will be a techno hell...) my post mortem on the whole deal is dehydration and lack of base... wow, i coulda had a V8... SS--thanks for the perspective-- exactly 6 months from date of bionic foot surgery i shouldn't whine. PR round the bend... good luck today, may your taffy be plain vanilla. glidegal

glide, you know, I still haven't been able to talk my sister into the surgery. She seems most concerned about taking time off. (She has six dogs, sometimes more, to look after. Yes, I've offered.)Can you refresh my memory? How long were you actually off your feet? I'm sure I'll be Plain Vanilla Taffy (thx), but I daren't go there after my Cinnamon Pop Tart days.

glidegal, sorry your race didn't turn out the way you had hoped, but you seem to have extracted some lessons from it already. Here's another thing to consider (if you sweat as profusely as I do ): electrolytes.Good luck with your continuing training. You are a bright spot on CR.

Nice race and RR, glidegal! You've obviously "learned" from your race and have received some good advice ...better runs are in your future. However, you have set an interesting precedent. It won't be long before someone posts their "13 songs" and we'll all have to guess what pace each mile was run at based on the song!! Ah well, as long as there are good prizes ... PJEdited to say that I've felt song #13 many times during my runs & races! [This message has been edited by Canfit (edited Jul-06-2007).]

holly, as I had feared... the music may have usurped some sproink as well...i'm willing to settle for that change in form... rosie-- still so good to see you back and all your je ne sais quoi... SS-- as not to bore folks with old war wounds, write me at cinoregon428@yahoo.com... there I can provide prognosis and recovery and get RRaunchy wit chaz 42n81-- it was definitely dehydration--- i blame it on Aid station #7 that had VERY old people filling up water cups 1 at a time... all of them giving advice on how full to fill it. God love em for volunteering, but can we have one person under 60 there to "provide direction"? Oh Lord, is that our fate here? Bah! I think not. euphie-- you keep me sane on the big boy board and you KNOW what I mean here... ilene-- i want to be you: speed, fashion, lip gloss... what else is there? ksrnr and canfit-- tag, you're it--next RR, tunage real or imagined (hint: easier with 5K). Serious! mil de la bot--nice suggestion: Sun Spot by Bob Seger-- you sly one! tselbs bringin' it on home-- I LIVE for my next 10K and thank you for that! glidegal

Hey DoubleGHysterical report! I can name that tune in ONE note! My personal favorite is Mile 8 -- unfortunately. I'm still trying to figure out the HM pacing but I tend to err in the other direction. I start out too easy humming "Beautiful Day" for miles 1 - 10 and then have to switch to "Run Like H3LL" for the final 3.1. All-in-all it sounds like you have indeed come a long way from surgery! Thanks for the great race report and congrats! Glad you got to hang with LabD too! ------------------ choover

It happens to the best of us, glidegal......running a 10k PR and still having another 7 miles to run is a recipe for pain. I have done similar on more than a few occasions, but they have all been good lessons. Not only was this an experience to learn from, but chances are that you will have bumped up your fitness up a notch as a result of it. It is quite common for good races to come on the heels of experiences like these. Congratulations on the 10k PR, btw Jim

Mile 8 had to be your problem! The pace you would have to run to keep up with Blister in the Sun would make anyone turn to The Wall at Mile 10!!! Now take your lessons learned and kick some major ASSphalt in your next one!

Clearly training and race prep is not the problem....you just need a new playlist for the last three miles, perhaps:Mile 11: Girls Just Want to have Fun Mile 12: Born to Run Mile 13: I will survive The challenge is always finding the right pace for the day and sticking to it. You'll get it next time.
