The Americana Festival 5K was the first race that I talked my son (age 10) into running. I was trying to beat my June 5K PR of 23:45, but DS was fine with me running ahead, since he had done very little training and was just doing it for fun.Fashion Report: See photo. My shoes do not match. And notice the cut-off sock I use under the Garmin on my wrist? Not even a matching color. I’m a fashion train wreck. The race start was at 8:00 am, and we got there early enough for me to run almost 3 miles to warm up, while my son rode his bike beside me (running a 3 mile warm-up would have been way too much for him). There were disposable timing chips in the race bib, in the part that tears off – the first time I had seen this. My mistake was in not lining up close enough to the front, but I wanted to start with my son, and was thinking that with timing chips it wouldn’t matter. However, there were no mats at the start, and with nearly 1000 people, I never heard a gun go off, just noticed that people began moving forward. I ran for a little bit, then realized that there were no starting mats, and started my Garmin. DS and I parted ways with a wave, and I took off. The race was along the route where a parade was scheduled for later, but people were already lined up in lawn chairs, so we had some nice crowd support. I felt pretty good, starting out a little bit slow, but still at a good clip. The race was out and back, up and over a long hill, then back up and over the same hill. My intent this time was to try starting slower and finishing faster, as opposed to my last 5K where I started out fast and finished slower (and in a lot of pain). Maybe it was that the temps were not as hot or that this was morning instead of evening, but overall this race was MUCH less painful than my last 5K – no cramping up, out of breath but not tearing at my chest. Maybe that means that I didn’t run hard enough. After the halfway point, as I was running back over the hill, I saw son coming and he gave me a hugh grin and a high-five as we passed each other. I love that boy! Anyway, I thought I was near the finish and gave a nice kick, then realized that I was wrong and still had another half-mile to go, so then when I actually saw the finish line, I kicked AGAIN. (sigh) I clicked off my Garmin as I crossed the finish and here’s what the GARMIN RESULTS were: Mile 1 – 7:31 Mile 2 – 7:30 Mile 3 – 7:08 (this is the fastest mile I have ever clocked myself at) Last .1 - :32 (5:10 pace – yowza!) Garmin distance: 3.1 miles Garmin time: 22:42 HOWEVER, the OFFICIAL RESULTS were: Finishing time: 23:01 OA: 189/1030 AG: 4/60 That’s a 19-second difference, so I don’t know, maybe the course was slightly long? Or I started too far back in the pack and took that long to get to the start line? Still, that’s a 44-second PR, and I’m happy with that. But jeesh, now I have the Garmin clocking me at a 22:42 5K, YOU KNOW I have to run another race and see if I can get that as an official time. After crossing the finish line, I jogged back until I found my wonderful son, and ran the last bit in with him. Here’s the two of us in the stands after the race. Thanks for reading! (Edited to fuss with resizing photo) ------------------ Holly

Good jobYou have been really going fast in the races over the last little while, Holly. Your thought process of learning from previous races are allowing you to maximize opportunities. I see NO fashion flaws, just a lovely looking runner and a nice looking son who also is dressed fashionably. That is a great experience. I am sitting here laughing, wondering when that little daughter of yours is going to want to rip down the racing trail with you. THAT is going to be fun and I want to be there to see it happen. Congratulations on a very nice race and event.

I don't know if this course is certified or not, but given that you started in the back of the pack and there were no timing mats at the start, that gap is certainly due to the long start. On a certified course the time and the distance will be more accurate than the Garmin. (I would tend to discount the accuracy of that final tenth of a mile however, as that is super fast for any runner.) Your decision to line up where you did was for your son, and it was the right decision. So where are you now?First, you know that your training has been going well and that your good base has allowed you to finish a fiveK much stronger than you used to. Also, you know a bit more about how to pace yourself, a lot more. So I would set my sights on an AG placement at a future fiveK (you just missed the hardware on this one), and line up in front. You are just off 7 minute miles and deserve to be closer to the start line, but not on it. This is a very good effort from you. Spareribs

Great racing! You are setting PRs in every race! You are a very talented runner and you work hard at your training too. That is a winning combination for sure. Congratulations on an awesome finish time. How cool to run with your son as well. He has a great mom to be proud of and to share racing with. Excellent photo too, you look beautiful! ------------------ Ilene

See? You really are a lot faster than you give yourself credit for. 4th in your AG is a fantastic result! Of course you're not going to be running 7s in the Air Force run, but I'll bet you will have a great time in that one as well.------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

Congrats to Holly and DS. Holly you just get faster and faster. With that time you surely weren't far off the winning ag time. Do you know what it was? ksrunr

Holly--great race !! When I first looked at your picture, I only saw the top half, and thought "Wow only 10 and he's passed his mom already" Then I scrolled down a bit and saw he did have a little boost, still not long, though, huh?I think I need you for my pace bunny at my next 5k. Although I'd hate to slow you down that much. Negative splits for the race--you're becoming a 5k tactician as well.

Thanks for all the kind words!LaT – no other races planned as yet, other than the September marathon, and possible a HM in October (ORRRC Dayton River Corridor Classic). Euphoric – I only wish that was true, but alas, my family (and prolly my boss) could give you a laundry list of things I do not excel in. Thanks, though. Ksrunr – I think 3rd AG award had a time of 22:36, so even if my Garmin time had been official, she still would have had me beat. Still, in a field that large I was surprised to get 4th. Breger – Don’t worry, I don’t think I’ll catch up with you for a while. DS came in at 32:xx. He placed about 740th OA, and so he was very happy that he “beat nearly 300 people.” This is actually the first time he has run this far.

Holly, I agree with DH. again. What a happy report. It "gave me a hugh grin" . Your hard work sure is paying off. I'm so glad it went so well. (almost said wow again) Frustrating about the timing, but you'll just have to do it again. :-) I'm so happy DS was happy! I'd been going to ask that.. but you just answered. Please congratulate him for me, both for doing so well & for running the race in the first place! Good for him. & you too.
