Short Version: Finished in 50:45, over my goal of 49:30, but it was a reasonable time considering the heat. Long Version: Met lleneforward and her track club friend before the race and introduced them to my youngest brother. This is a relatively small local event, with a total of about 500 people running last year (5K & 10K). My officemate at work, his son is running in his first race, the 5K, and I see him just before the race and wish him well. The course is flat, two loops around major streets for us 10K’ers. At race time, it is about 75 degrees and sunny. I realize to most of you that doesn’t sound too bad, but for me, it is pretty hot for racing. The 5K people start a tenth of a mile ahead of the 10K folks. Since there are twice as many 5K people, with a lot of walkers, the half first mile is moderately congested. I push pretty hard from the get go and start off pretty fast. But as early as miles 2 and 3, I can see it is going to be tough to hit my goal. I finish the first half and am still in contention, but I have already spent a lot of energy. I had intended to run “easy, efficient and smooth” the first three miles and really push miles 4 & 5. But the second loop is just too hot and I fade quite a bit. I get talking with some guy while on the second loop and he asks me my age group. When I tell him, he zooms off (it was a joke) and ends up beating me by several seconds. But I wasn’t in any danger of placing any way, I end up finishing 6th out of 15. My splits: 7:43/ 8:05/ 7:59/ 8:17/ 8:35/ 8:06/ 2:00 About three minutes after I finish my brother struggles in. The heat has taken its toll on him as he was expecting to run a couple of minutes faster. After the race, I find out my officemate’s son places in his age group and I am quite happy for him. He scores a tote bag (or back pack?) emblazoned with the event title and his finish. His family is all here, and I can see it is quite a fun and proud moment. llene also did very well. All in all, a fun time with family and friends from work and imaginary friends and their friends. Hope you and your loved ones all had a great 4th of July.

huskydon - we have to race whatever the temps are. The best temps for us are really in the 40's. You ran a fine strong race. wtg.ksrunr

It was so wonderful to get to meet up with you again and spend time with you. Your brother is so funny, when you introduced me as one of your 'imaginary' friends, he said, 'so I can't really see you right now!?' This was a wonderful race and just the right size too. Congratulations on coming so close to your goal, you are very speedy!

Oh, yes. 75 is hot to me too, huskydon.Maybe it's a good thing it was a bit congested at the start or you really would have gone out like a bullet. I think your time is very good, not too, too far off your goal time, considering the effect of the weather. Sounds like a fun day ... and meeting our beautiful Ilene too! Hope you enjoy the rest of it.

HD, that is not bad pacing at all, and in particular on a hot day. Nice going. What must have been troubling is the RD's decision to start the fiveK .1 ahead of the tenK. In theory it makes sense as everyone finishes the same place, but it really mucks up the start as all the tenK'ers must scoot around the back of the pack 5K'ers. That is strange. Seems you handled it well. Great you got to meet Ilene, one of my life goals. Well done. Spareribs

Huskydon,You ran a good race. Never underestimate what the heat can do to you, especially at race pace when there is no cloud cover. You were were only a little more than a minute over your goal. This morning I ran a few miles at marathon pace as part of an 8-mile run. After about 2 miles into it I said to myself "I sure am glad I'm not racing this morning!" It was 72 with the sun shining brightly. Those miles were not easy, and I wasn't going nearly as fast as I would have had to in a 10k. It felt HOT. All in all it sounds like you had an enjoyable morning and I enjoyed reading about it. Jim

I ran a 10K race yesterday, much closer to the coast and by the time I finished, I thought it was too warm as well, La Palma is more inland so I can imagine it to be much warmer for sure. You weren't too far off goal, a few degrees cooler or less 5K'ers to manuver around, you would have hit goal for sure. Hope you had a nice 4th of July aftewards. Sherie

Nice race Don considering the heat, you ran a very good race and fell short by just over a minute. Not bad at all, the heat effects most runners so believe me you did quite well to be that close to your goal. Congratulations on a race well run. ------------------ My User Profile "Keep on Running" Bob

Heat is a killer. Your time was very respectable considering the conditions. Meeting Ilene, imaginary though she is, must have been a treat.

Huskydon – Temps were about 71 degrees when I raced the other morning, and I was sweating buckets. 75 sounds pretty darn hot to me. Heat and crowds took some of your time away, but still a good finishing time. Nice racing!------------------ Holly

I'm with you on 75 being hot. My death spiral begins at about 60 degrees when racing. In fact, I'm starting to fantasize about winter running....Given the heat you really didn't miss your goal by that much. Plus, you got to hang with the lovely Ilene and her running friend and see an office mate's son receive an award. Sounds like a good day to me! Congrats!
