My first race or speedwork since Boston (except that little E2E leg, of course). This is the inaugural year of this little race in Edmonds, a town just north of Seattle (and only 15 minutes on backroads from my house in NW Seattle), celebrating its 100th year. Nice tech race t-shirt to commemorate it, too.Dragged two kids out of bed just before 9:00 to make the 10:00 start. They don't go to many races with me but, darn it, it was a gorgeous 4th of July morning and there was no excuse to sleep in when Mom's got a race to run. Outta bed, sleepyheads! Last minute registrant at the park where it started. Mr. SR and the kids headed off to find breakfast while I did a mile or so warm-up. Ate half of a Carbboom. My hope was to run some nice 7:30s and call it a good workout. Fashion report: Red singlet, my U.S. flag shorts I bought post 9/11 (and have only worn once; remembered them in the bottom of my drawer this a.m.), new Mizuno Elixirs. http://www.nationalrunningcenter.com/prodinfo.asp?number=IF192 Mile 1 -- out of the park on a short climb, turned to the right and headed uphill. Okay, not too bad to start on uphill, but a half mile into it, I started really hoping for a turn. This was not kind. Steeper yet. I passed a guy pushing a double jogger (okay, maybe I should stop whining to myself.) Seriously, though, any time now, I'm ready to make a turn. Not to be until the Mile 1 mark. 7:40 first mile. Mile 2 -- turned into a forested area (another park?), nice loop, flattening out. Then out of the loop and back out to the road we climbed on earlier for a nice downhill. 6:59. Much better. The guy pushing a double jogger blew by me. Mile 3.1 -- downhill continues, a short one block climb to where the parade route was to start a while later, left along the route for a few blocks (I hear my daughter cheering for me) and then a turn toward the finish. 7:20. 21:59/7:05 avg. Nearly certain it's a masters PR for me. Not sure where it came from, but I'm very pleased. My right foot was quiet, my race-averse stomach was quiet (even better) and I got a nice boost to my self-esteem. I think I was the 3rd or 4th woman. Will check later. I love small races. Lots of comments on my shorts before the race and while I ran from the few bystanders watching and cheering. I chose well this morning. We had planned to stay for the kids' parade, but it was nearly another hour before the start and that was an eternity in the kids' mind. Instead, we headed to a coffee shop for my iced mocha post-race reward, back to the park to play on the playground for a while, then home. Thanks for reading.

In 5K reports I have to restrain myself from going right to the final mile, because so many 5K performances are so predictable ("first mile too fast, oops I'm slowing! Now just hanging on for dear life"). But look what you did in mile three. That is why the runners with the miles and the good base, like you, are able to run the race all the way through, strong and steady. This is a very nice effort. Well done. (Nice clothes too.) Yay, Soundie! Hoping for 7:30s and you blast out 7:05s?!?! Cool.I'm sure the shorts looked marvy, but frankly, you'd make a big ol' burlap sack look fabulous. How long did it take to do your hair? Good stuff and congrats on the PR. Hope you and your family have a great day. (Guess I'd better get cracking so I don't shame myself and the team!)

Huh, I haven't even heard of that one. I could have done 2 5K's in one day Sweet run! Seems like there's PR's all around today. BTW I have some openings on my corporate relay team if you're interested in that kind of thing: http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum14/HTML/002856.shtml

Great race Soundie, and I'd agree with Sans Souci, you would make any shorts look good!Isn't it nice to have a race where the body parts all cooperate and allow you to run like you're capable of? Awesome effort! I'm with you, I love small races. ------------------ Labduck

I wore my flag shorts yesterday too! It is nice to have the perfect occasion to wear them, isn't it? And of course I know you looked fabulous. That was a great race and it is hardly fair to have a steep hill in a 5K, but you did a master's PR anyway, woohooo! Congratulations!

Soundalina - With Seattle lacking any parade or other Fourth of July activities/festivities between the midnight Firecracker 5000 at the Seattle Center at 11:55 p.m. on 7/3 and the separate fireworks shows along the waterfront at Elliott Bay and over at Lake Union on July 4th (both unfortunately at 10:00 p.m.), it has sometimes been enticing to do one of the several outlying 5 or 10K Independence Day Runs but it is usually too much trouble to give up a lazy day listening to baseball (this year including a local Seattle Mariner updated version if Detroit Tigers' announcer Ernie Harwell's great A Game for All America) to fight traffic for such a short run. Thus, when I saw the Edmonds 5K in your Intrepid schedule, it only made me wonder briefly where they could ever find someplace flat enough to hold a centennial celebration run that would not have be so many hills like many of the runs around here. In particular, I know that first mile-long hill very well. So steep even cyclists have trouble summiting and I never, in my wildest dreams, would have imagined they would have dared include it - or any parts - in a local fun run. As for you, it'sone thing to be in shape for speedy running a fast race on the flats but subjecting the same muscles to all sorts of different straining and stretching in all different directions on prolonged and steep ascents and descents is probably the equivalent of a lot faster on any other course. As a fitness runner without any competition except myself who loves hill as great cardio-work-outs no matter how long it takes long it takes, I hope this year's run was not a one-shot centennial celebration and hope there will be another chance. Not that I miss you too or anything like that but I think you are ready to demolish the 24 hills on the Seafair Marathon course. [This message has been edited by Tetsujin30 (edited Jul-05-2007).]

Great race, great fashion, great day for the Sound One!!! I marvel and bow to you speed demons. Make note of whatever you ate and drank on 7/3... it was a winning combo for rocket fuel to burn. glidegal

CongratulationsSounds like you looked wonderful, ran superbly, and had your own cheering section. That hill would have knocked out the average runner in the first mile, but it only served to allow you to enjoy the next two coming after. Thanks for a fun RR and again.....congratulations on a nicely run race. ------------------ vista129
