Abbreviated version -- the kid never had a chance!!! The old man can still beat him in a 10k...Official time of 37:04 for me and 39:02 for KeeMan. To be fair though, he ran the first 5 miles with his teammates before kicking really hard at the finish AND he doesn't run the distance very often... On to the the details -- Fashion Report (I didn't wear my normal stuff). White Nike Hat White with Black Stripe Race Ready Singlet Garmin 305 and HRM Dark Grey Sweatbands Black Nike Compression shorts Black Nike SHORT shorts Balega Socks White with Red and Blue Nike Marathoers So, I ran this race last year and knew it would be a bear for two reason, 1. It's hot and humid (75 degrees and dewpoint of about the same) and 2. There's no flat on the course. Even though GPS is not great at elevation, you get an approximation... So, what to do? Shut up and run! So, get to the starting line and look around -- lots of High School and College runners and one Team USA Runner (OK, outta their league). Team USA Runner wins the race in 31 something. Plan is to get out hard and then try to hang on to 5:45s for the rest of the race. Success on getting out hard! I will leave out the play by play because I can't remember... Got out hard, but gave some back once it got into the hilly portion. Got a side stitch that didn't help -- can you figure out where (given the splits). 5:37 @ 157 5:48 @ 164 5:58 @ 166 6:12 @ 166 5:57 @ 168 6:00 @ 169 1:28 @ 172 (5:45/mi.) Looking at the HR, looks like I was right on the redline most of the race. All in all, I think I passed more people than passed me. Good effort! 3rd in AG, not sure about overall AND won a $25 gift certificate to a restaurant I like (they were a sponsor). KeeMan was happy with his race but wants to find a flat one when it is cooler... Thanks for reading! Edited to add -- I buy this time more than my 35:50 last month on the course I thought was short. This one came in @ 6.25 on my Garmin. That seems VERY accurate! [This message has been edited by hermosaboy (edited Jul-04-2007).]

I think you're the firecracker, Hermosaboy. They can't all be flat and fast. That'd be boring. Great racing, as usual.

Hard to look at that elevation chart and make any sense of your mile splits, but it is certain that you pressed throughout and had no dead spots. I like to see a tenK with a hill or two, which makes it interesting, but this course looks wicked. Well done. Spareribs

I don't know about the "old man" when I look at your times, hermosaboy! Pretty good race from where I sit. If you were 3rd in AG, must have had a couple of fast ones ahead of you. Did they beat you by much? Continue to run well. I enjoy reading your results. You have that competitive streak! PJ

Nice racing Hermosa, especially in the heat, humidity and hills. Judging by your HR, your effort was very even. What is your max HR?

They beat me fairly handily... 35:25 and 35:36 I was about 20 yard behind 2nd place at the mile -- then he pulled away.

Heat, humidity, hills and a side stitch. Holy Cow, you are fast. Congratulations on the hardware and running a fine race. I am excited about your new outfit! Don't you think black compression shorts are too hot for a hot day?

Better to have them on than to get the dreaded thigh chafe! [This message has been edited by hermosaboy (edited Jul-05-2007).]

Hermosaboy – Amazing that you can be that darn fast when you’re doing all those high-jumps… As usual, another great race, you fast fella. Congratulations on the 3rd place AG and getting a restaurant gift certificate (now THAT’s a really useful prize). ------------------ Holly

Nice racing, HB, and it must have been fun to have your son there too. Do you think he's just a little hesitant to take on the "old man" just yet? If you get pressed (by him), I wonder if Body Glide instead of compression shorts would deal with the chafing. Did the stitch go away? What, if anything, did you do to deal with it?It's always nice to read your RR's--and there are so many of them! ------------------ Fortunate--a volleyballer with a running problem Profile

If it were a 5k, I think he would battle me tooth and nail! Given it's a bit longer, I think he is unsure of how to race it. Then again, at the half marathon in January, I had him by a minute at the halfway point and only beat him by 16 seconds. We will see what happens with the three races we have together in the next month. I just personally like the feel of the compression shorts (there was body glide too). The stitch did let up. At one point, I actually thought I was going to have to stop. I tried changing my breathing pattern, breathing differently (blowing out harder, on a different stride, etc.).

Very good race, Rob!! That time was fantastic, considering the high temps, humidity, and hills. With the 35:50 on the suspected "short course", is this your second fastest 10K, then? I looked at your chart, and was very impressed on how you pushed to the 170 HR level for most of the last 2.7 miles. Way to dig down for it! Congrats to Keeman also! Keep up the fantastic running, someday you will kick butt on the Pete and Kirt show. I'd love to beat those guys some time also.... Hope to see you at the Lumberjack 10! John

Well, if you throw out the suspected short course, this would be my fastest 10k. Funny thing is that I have trouble finding accurate 10ks. Since I started running 4 years ago, I have run 5. Three were long, One was short and One was accurate. Sheesh!!!
Pete and Kirt? Yeah, that would be nice! I have beaten Kirt a few times. However, I only think he was "racing" one of them. We will see what the future holds. You will see me at Lumberjack -- going to try to crack an hour....

Great race Hermosaboy, I love reading your race reports...you are so freaking fast! I really look forward to reading the reports where you and your son are racing. It must be so much fun the both of you. However, you had better savor these victories while they last, because he is going to be trouncing you soon enough...not meant to dis you in any way you speed demon, but your son is obviously pretty darn fast himself and getting faster.Congratulations again very, very cool! ------------------ My User Profile "Keep on Running" Bob

He should be beating me now -- He just hasn't gotten his mind around that yet. It will be bittersweet -- but I know that I will be VERY proud!!!
