Decided to sign up at the last moment for a 5mi/8km race along the Toronto waterfront last evening.

I haven't run any 5-10k races for over a year (I ran this one a year ago), but was hoping to establish a benchmark to help me set some training paces for my next marathon later this fall. I also wanted to see what I could do at a shorter distance. (Everyone talks about 5k pace, but I had no idea what mine was.)

Arrived about 6:30, picked up my race kit and met up with four members from my running group. The race was to start at 7:15. Two of us went off for a one-mile warm-up run about 6:45 only to find out after we got back that the race start was pushed back to 7:30 (they had a mix up with online registration).

I decided to "race" this event, although race is a relative term. Having very little experience at this distance, I didn't have a very good sense of how fast to start out, what kind of pacing to maintain, etc. I decided that 8:00 mpm would be a realistic goal to shoot for.

The gun went off and I moved out at a quick pace (for me) along with the several hundred other runners. At about the 1/2 mile mark I realized I was going pretty fast and started thinking that I might end up crashing at the half-way mark. But I decided to keep going anyway with the goal of seeing what I could do and pushing my HR a bit more in the process. Mile 1 passed with one of the race organizers calling out 7:56 ...not bad.

Mile 2 went by quickly with the time being announced at 7:51. I tried to pick out runners with a fairly steady pace and stay with them, focusing on form and easy pace as much as possible. I was working harder than I normally do in a race but felt pretty good.

We arrived at the turnaround and now the breeze was at our backs. Still felt good as mile 3 passed with the time being called out at 7:50.

The return leg runs along the boardwalk following Lake Ontario. This time of year, and especially tonight, there were people everywhere. We passed 2-3 courts of beach volleyball in progress, an open air patio bar and plenty of walkers, bikers on our return. We got lots of cheers and "pick it up" as we passed.

Mile 4 came and went and I still felt good. My time was 7:51. I was actually passing people. With one mile to go, I decided to push a little harder. My HR was getting up there (high 160's), but my breathing was good. About 1/2 mile from the finish we headed back out onto the main road and climbed a fairly steep hill about 1/4 mile in length. I surprised myself with how strong I felt as I passed a few more runners on the hill. Another 1/4 mile push into the finish line with a final mile time of 7:22.

Final result was 5:04 mi. in 39:06 with average pace 7:46 and average HR 161. This was a PR for me at this distance. Overall, I was very pleased with how it worked out. I had a little bit left in the tank which leads me to believe I might have a faster time somewhere in the future.

What I have learned for future races ...
- make sure I get in a good warm-up run (something I learned here at B&B)
- not be afraid to push it a bit more (if it feels good) and work at higher HRs
- focus on running form and maintaining a steady pace

Placement results haven't been posted yet, so may update this later.

Thanks for reading.

Way to Go, PJ!!!
I enjoyed reading your RR, and was cheering for you to hang on to that sub-8:00 pace!!
You just got faster as the race went on and then ...WOW, what a fantastic last mile!!
You learned a lot about yourself here, and I think you have some more PR's waiting for you in the very near future.
Keep up the great work...
John

Nice race, PJ. You ran well and it sounds like you may have even underestimated yourself. This makes a nice baseline from which you can work. Congrats.

Canfit,
A great last minute race, and an excellent report!
5 miles is a tough distance to learn how to pace, and it isn't a very popular distance for races being put on, so your report is especially valuable since you did it perfect! A new PR, woohooo! and holy cow, that last mile, steep hill and all. (why did they do that? I was thinking 'oh along the waterfront, cool, that should be flat all the way') I wonder how you dressed for this? Are Canadian evenings in the summer cool or getting warm?
Congratulations! Great job!

PJ, fine, fine race. I like to think it's a Canuck trait to attack hills and leave 'em gasping in your wake. (At least it helps to have that mindset.) Of course, this makes no sense at all because those you left in your wake are Canucks.

Now you have that benchmark and it sounds like you are already planning to PR again.

It sounds like you learned a lot and had a great race, PJ. Congratulations. Passing people at the end is a great confidence booster. Your recent high-mileage (>40 M) weeks have undoubtedly built up your endurance, and racing is a good way to learn how long you can sustain those higher HR's. If you can stay healthy and stick with your training, you're gonna have a great fall marathon.

You tore up that course, canfit. To beat your goal by 14 sec/mi is fantastic. Congrats on a speedy, well run, race and a big PR.

Very nice race, PJ. Outstanding job of pacing. It's hard to do much better than that.

Now for the exciting stuff. You said you wanted a benchmark to base your training paces. When I go to the Jack Daniels (not the whiskey) running calculator at

http://runworks.com/calculator.html

and punch in 5 miles in 39:06 I get the paces:

Easy or Long - 9:42
Marathon - 8:38
Threshold Runs (tempo or cruise intervals) - 8:04
Intervals or V02 Max - 7:24
Repititions with full recovery - 7:00

P.S. Fwiw, I always use the course measurement rather than Garmin to calculate paces. Garmins tend to measure most routes long. I have a Forerunner 205 and love it, but know that the course certification process is much more reliable. If your race was a 5 mile, your 39:06 would be 7:49 pace, and if it was an 8k it would be 7:52.

Again, nice run. I hope the Daniels paces help and that I didn't make you mad by chopping off the .04 mile Garmin bonus.

Jim,

Thanks for your kind comments and the Daniels info. Before this race, I linked up with a "new coach". My choice was based on the success he's had with other runners I know. I was particularly interested in getting some help with speedwork and my pacing times. He uses Daniels as well (VDOT for establishing paces). I gave him my HM PR of 1:50 and he pulled the Daniel's VDOT tables which had slightly different pace suggestions:
Easy - 10:11
Marathon - 8:46
Lactate Threshold - 8:12
VO2 Max - 4:42/KM

A little higher than those based on my 5 mile race yesterday. Any comments on this. My coach says that I'd be able to re-visit my VDOT 2-3 times over the next few months based on how I was doing. My whole objective here is to ensure that I'm training efficiently at the right paces and building the necessary speedwork into my training as well.

I may go back to the Daniel's tables myself and bring this up with my coach next time I see him and see what he has to say.

I am very excited that you ran this race PJ, and for the reasons you did it. First, you did a great job and learned something about yourself. Second, you now have some useful working paces. Don't worry about that few second disparity between your coach's figures and the ones from Daniels. These are approximate ranges you can aim for. What is more important is that you understand why you run at threshold pace in a given workout.

Your marathon times will also improve steadily if you do an occasional fiveK as a time trial from time to time. You needn't sacrifice your marathon training for them either. Just train right through them. Notice that your strong marathon training base sustained you in the later miles of this 5-miler. Not many runners can do that. You are very fit. Spareribs

Thanks for your comments everyone! My final numbers were:
104/208 males, 29/49 M50-59, 39:13 final time (no chip), 7:51mpm.

Ileneforward - Weather is great in evenings right now. Temp was about 20C/68F at start of race. Cooled down after race when sun was setting but overall perfect conditions.

I am feeling much more comfortable about my running paces right now. We'll see how it evolves over the summer.
