For the benefit of people who have never done this race - correct me if Im wrong - in the picture of the mountain from the starting line, the big crest in the center is might just be Chandler's ridge, which is at about mile 5. The third distant lump to the lower left of center is the actual summit of Mt. Washington. It's far. And high.

I thought I'd add the last few photos that I took on the course. How the heck did I miss the 1Mile marker? I swear I didn't see that runner there when I took this picture... I got the mile 2 marker-and only the marker. I'm still learning how to work this camera. some shade/some sun--during the third mile, but it was definitely hot-trapped heat. Notice I'm looking at everyone's back as they all pass me... Mile 3 means we still have a long way to go. By mile 6, I'm getting this camera thing down pat. the photo of my Garmin at mile 7 ------------------------------------------------------------ I'm sayin' that the photos cost me a couple of minutes, at least...but were well worth it! ------------------------------------------------------------ SS-So Sorry about clicking 'larger' not 'smaller' photos...Believe me when I say I did not do it just to annoy the West Coasters like yourself... DrWu-Although it's not on the docket for next year, I do have an open invite to the Grambo house up there in Minnesota or NH or ME--wherever that place is that houses Mt Washington...So, we'll see... Hally-You must arrange for a ride down the mountain ahead of time. This caused me a great deal of concern as the ride gets you your warm clothes at the top. I was lucky to prearrange a ride down with KTilton (who finished 10th OA) and his SO-Jess. We stopped 4 times going down the mt-to keep the brakes from burnin' up too much-although we could smell them most of the way down. My injured leg held up but looked impressively ugly at the end. Twitching/spasm...Blechhhh. rochrunner-the temperature dropped about 30 degrees in my guesstimation. It was very impressive-going from very warm/hot to pretty darn cold-especially with all the sweating. And yes, the steam powered cog is still there, I'm told. tramps-Although I'm not planning to, I'm not saying 'No' just yet... Thanks to all for the nice comments. Dale

Oh my... The things you crazy runners do!Over 7 miles at your 5K HR. That's just incredible to me. Awesome effort Dale, and great report. Thanks for sharing, and if I ever get the stoopid notion to race up a mountain, I'll think back to this report for inspiration...or a reality check!

It sounds as if you ran that perfectly - what an incredible challange!I think you are supposed to wait two weeks before making the decision to run again - no? If you do, let me know - I might come up and ride people down. I know you and TB ran this year - let me know who's in. Hally - you with me?

That was one of the most enjoyable RR's I have read on this site in ages. Almost like a story where you can't wait to find out what happens. Great photos too. Thanks Dale. Spareribs

Dale,Nice run as usual, and you are crazy as usual. I'm glad this report has a few photos of you, proving you are still in your twenties and should not be posting here as I have said for a long time. In fact, are you even out of college yet? Doubtful, based on the visual evidence. I have climbed Mt. Washington at least a dozen times but have no plans to run up it. Mt. Washington even figured in my courtship of my wife. We were engaged and took a couple of days to climb the northern Presidentials, staying in Madison Hut one night. Our last peak was Mt. Washington. As we were heading up, the weather was turning bad: windy and rainy. Other hikers, dressed in expensive and bright-colored hiking clothes, were streaming down off the mountain to get away. Night was falling. My wife-to-be asked me dubiously, "Should we keep going up?" "Sure, no problem," I said, and pulled two brown garbage bags out of my backpack. We tore holes for our head and arms and put on the garbage bags. We put knit caps on our heads and gloves on our hands. Then we headed up to the top, braving the cold winds and the heavy rain. On top of the mountain, the weather was awful and the place was almost deserted. And it was late at night. Luckily, we found a ranger who was heading down the mountain, and he gave us a ride. I don't know what we would have done without him. But that's the point of having adventures: you don't know what's going to happen till it happens. My wife later said she thought I was testing her. Nah, it was just business as usual for me. Worst case, we hike back down the Auto Road toward civilization. Dark Horse ------------------ I'm a dark horse, running on a dark race course

Wow, that sounds like quite a race. A long time ago we went up that "hill" on a train and even that was kind of scary. Can't imagine running up it! Great pics, too.------------------ "It's never too late to be what you might have been."

Thank you for such a great report! and photos that are just like being there. As a fitness runner for skiing, in my dreams, I'd only run like this and never waste time on the flats so the annual boomers' Mt. Washington rr's are my running siren song more than any other race. We had one like this too to the ski area in Anchorage that looks just like your photos. In fact, a friend loved it so much he has been making the annual trek to Mt. Washington now for over twenty years. It's so obvious you love Mt. Washington too and honor and respect her by taking time to memorialize the experience in lasting photographs for all of us to experience and you don't run yourself and the mountain into submission without enjoying it to the fullest. I hope you get to do it every year. . . . . with your camera, please.

Beautiful! Grueling, but beautiful! Awesome race, but not one I would want to do. Makes the hill repeats I was complaining about this morning look like nothing. I’d love to WALK up, though. Great job!------------------ Holly

Holly, I have climbed Mt. Washington a dozen times, and would be happy to take you and your family on a hike to the top if you ever visit New England. Dark Colt climbed it carrying his own backpack, as part of a 20-mile overnight hike, when he was 5 years old. Of course, not every kid is like Dark Colt. Okay, I'm way behind on reading race reports, but trying to get caught up. Mt Washington just blows my mind. But I must say that this is one of the first Mt W RR that doesn't make it sound like a tortuous event! I've always sworn I'd never attempt it...but your report made it sound almost...fun? Congrats on a greta race! We're heading to the Mt Washington area next weekend, and we're thinking of taking the cog railway up with my 3-year old. I think that's about all I could manage up that beastly mountain! --Robin
