First, thanks again to all of you who passed along advice on how I should approach doing my first double run. I thought of several of you along my run this a.m.In this event, I ran the 5K leg, my teammate Holly (who is also my son's teacher), biked the 30K and then I topped it off by running another 5K. She doesn't train much during the school year, so really had only gotten in a couple of long bike rides in the past two wknds so she warned me she is not up to her normal racing shape yet. I tried to assure her that I only wanted to have fun doing this and had no lofty goals of winning or placing. She was relieved. this was a very loosely organized event in the small town of Rogue River Oregon, about 20 miles from home. There were no clocks per se (just someone with a stop watch as you crossed the finish line on your 2nd 5K run, but no one recording how the first 5K time was or timing the bicyclists. Therefore, my two 5K times are not official in the least. I did wear my timex and recorded my mile splits though. First 5K: mile 1: 8:29 mile 2: 17:22 finish: 26:53. I missed my PR by 9 seconds and I really was giving it all I had on that first run. Guess my lack of sleep and eating very little yesterday didn't bode well. And those weren't by choice - just the way things went. We were at my son's baseball bbq party last night and all they had were hotdogs, chips and pasta salad. so my carbs yesterday was about two servings of pasta salad. Oh, well. Fashion Report for first 5K: Asics Gel Foundations, black running skirt, blue shirt, white nike visor, diamond earrings. Holly did her 30K bike ride and it took her just a tick over an hour I believe. She said she really felt it that last few miles and knew she was undertrained for this. I was off on my second 5K now and this was on a different course, so good for a change of scenery. The first half mile, my legs were noticeably tired. I did walk around and stretch quite a bit during my hour wait. After I hit about 3/4 mile I felt much better. mile 1: 8:39 mile 2: 17:29 finish: 27:30ish I forgot to stop my watch when I crossed the finish line, but I think that was my time, give or take 5 seconds. My legs were just much more tired on the 2nd 5K and I knew I couldn't do better than I did on the first. Fashion Report for 2nd: Same attire except I put on a pink shirt, instead of blue. There were quite a few doing the whole duathlon solo and the guy that won overall, broke the 1993 record. I believe his time was 1:22 , beating the previous record by 2 minutes or so. It was so much fun and Holly and I are already looking forward to next year. Next year we'll be in the Masters Women's Team group and had we been in that today, we would have placed 1st with our time. Our overall team time was 1:54:55, which earned us 2nd place in the Open Women's Team (combined age of 37-79 and our combined age was 79). I was disappointed that I didn't PR and I was so close. But I don't know if there was anything I could have done differently in that first 5K to shave 9 seconds. I ran as good as I could. I have another 5K on June 30th and I plan on getting in some more speedwork prior to that one to see if I can beat my PR of 26:44. ------------------ Tamborini

Hey, great job there Tambo, it looks like you were pretty consistent, maybe fading a little in the last mile of the 2nd 5K, but it's hard to tell, given they were on different courses. Now that you guys know what to expect, you'll do great next year. congrats on the 2nd place finish, plus you managed seperate ensembles for each race, what a fashionista you are. Sorry I wasn't able to be there to cheer you on, but I was sending out vibes (or something like that ) between 8 and 11. I say this performance rates a Fremont shirt anywaysJohn

Your good training helped you in that second leg. You didn't slow much at all. This was great work for you to do. Nice going, and thanks for letting us know how it worked out. Spareribs

Tammy, I am so proud of you. Great way to run consistently. Congratulations on your hardware. Knowing you, you gave your best my dearest and that is what it counts. Thanks for the great fashion report. You must have been the most gorgeous boomer on the race.Your time is nothing to sneeze at. Running two 5ks in the row must be a tough thing to do. Now... where are the pictures? I also thought of you today. Sending love and smiles your way.

Tammy, sounds like a lot of fun. I think our second time is quite impressive given the dead legs and being the second 5k. I think a couple sessions of speed work and you'll smash your PR at the end of June. Good luck.

Those were a couple of nice runs. Perhaps even though you felt like you were running all out in the first one, some part of your brain had you holding back just a little, knowing what was to come later. That PR will fall soon, when all the peices fall into place. The bottom line is that you wanted to have fun, and you did!

Tamadualina -I'll have to check my Fremont time but I think you beat me by 5 seconds! way to do in your first du. I took the Fremont 5K "what-happens-in-Femont-stays-in-Fremont" Fun Run Elvis/guitar t-shirt to the annual cyclist festival over there yesterday but, for some reason, didn't need to wear it so, if you can get yourself a bike, you'll have blue-Elvis-pink for next year's FR, . . . I mean race. =================== ETA [QUOTE]Originally posted by TammyM: there were only two. So, although we placed *2nd*, it really would not have mattered our time . . . we still would have placed 2nd but when I see all the results ranked together in the paper, it's really not that impressive. it doesn't matter none hon. even when I see my name in last place sometimes, maybe especially when I get DGL, I'm even prouder to be able to do it without quitting. Great job Tamaduathalina! You were very consistent with both 5Ks so close together and so close to your PR. This has been a great year for you and you are getting better all the time. Since this was your first duathlon, I think this qualifys as a PR duathlon. Congratulations!

Great work, Tammy! It was kind of you to take the stress off of Holly by reassuring her as you did. Still, you gave it a real effort for the team.Yes, do the speedwork, eat properly the nights before your June 30th 5k, and go get that PR!

Wow Tamaquickalina! Two 5Ks near PR pace with only an hour between. That there is some gritty running.Originally I was surprised when I read you went out so hard on your first race. Then I thought about what I would do under similar circumstances, and I would do the same thing. Bust the first one, and try to hold on for the second. That's a great effort you put out there. You should be very proud of your accomplishment. And I really like the dual fashion reports too! ------------------ Labduck

Thanks everyone!Lab - even though I was thinking I would save my best for last, I'm really glad I listened to the advice given and went out faster my first time. As you know, there are some real fast runners down here that enter all these events. Even at my 26 min 5K, I bet there were less than 10 others behind me (smallish event - maybe 30-35 entrants/teams all together), so of course, Holly is patiently waiting while quite a few other bicyclists were already off and biking after the 5K. So I imagine that mentally having to wait for your partner to come in while you see so many other already taking off can sort of dampen the enthusiasm a bit or decrease the adrenaline rush. Even though her and I were not in this for the competition of it all, it's inevitable that you get wrapped up in anyways. Of course, you want to do well and not be last. oh, sidenote about my fashion report. I was the only one wearing a running skirt (not surprising down here) and overheard a few ladies talking about "I've seen those before but never saw anyone wearing them - they are cute!" and a few people on the course said "that skirt is SOOO cute!!". ------------------ Tamborini

LOL Linda - yes, I saw the results in the paper at work this morning (I don't get the Medford paper at home) and suddenly all the air left my sails when I saw how we ranked compared with all the others. I thought there were three Open Women's Combined teams - but there were only two. So, although we placed *2nd*, it really would not have mattered our time . . . we still would have placed 2nd Some of the times of the athletes that did this as a solo event, were really amazing . . . there are some very very fast runners and cyclists down here! Our overall time was 1:56:55 ( I think I might have said 1:54:55 in my rr). It's still okay . . .we just wanted to break 2 hrs . . . but when I see all the results ranked together in the paper, it's really not that impressive.
