Afternoon BoomersGoal 1 beat last years time (same leg as last year) 54:30 Goal 2 Get as near to 50:00 as possible Goal 3 Get in under 50:00 (no chance) Navy Nike vest, black New Balance shorts and Brooks Axiom I just completed the South Downs Relay as part of a 4 man team today. I ran the second leg, which is very tough and hilly as is most of the course. I am the slowest member but I'm ok with that. The first leg is 7.5m start 09:30 Kwame went off, he completed the first leg in about 50 or 52 mins. The first runner had to wear a velcro strap around there ankle with the chip as does the last, this is then passed on as a baton. There were mats at the start and finish, hence the ankle thing. Kwame came in, in about 5th place give or take one. This put me under a bit of pressure as I set out with the fast teams. I knew I would only be overtaken and not the other. The first mile is a very steep hill, through a field, I had my piccie taken on that, so I will put it on the daily thread when it's about. My first mile was 11:57 but it was a hell of a hill and was quite pleased but trying to find that oxygen. mile 2 8:47 how did I do that, oh I know, I was running, chatting with another boomer type chap, for the next 4 miles. Mile 3 09:31 through the woods with more hills, steeper than m 2. Mile 4 09:15 at the peak woohoo. Have I got some in the tank to hit the downhills? Mile 5 07:34 and the rest was 1:22 Now, so that was an overall time of 48:29 a PR by 6:01 even though it was the same stage exactly, the distance on the garmin came in at 5.2m with the official distance 5.5, so pace offcial is 08:48 and garmin is 09:19 I know which one I would like but it still doesn't matter to the PR distance and time wise. Third leg Lee who has come on really well over the last year completed his 7.5 in 01:02 the toughest part of the course. Now, the fourth leg was run by the coach, a 62 year old, who has run for England in the sixties, fastest mile 4:05 with the like's of Ron Hill who he know's him very well. Even today some of the older not so famous but good runners were chatting to him before the start. He went off like a roocket. Last year he got lost. We finished with a 04:28 this year we were on for a 03:30 Na, not the case, unfortunately after his expected finish time passed we started asking questions. We heard some news we didn't want to hear. Mike had collapsed about mile 4 of his lap. Some runners had called for an ambulance, they had stoppeed to assist, they said the old guy, kept trying to get up. He said he had to finish as he couldn't let the team down. He left before the ambulance arrived and finished his race. He crossed the line and collapsed again. The paramedics came to his assistance but he didn't want to know. I eventually talked him into see the medic. His BP was taken, which was perfect plus he wasn't suffering any pains or pallpatations, he said he felt a bit vacant. He will see his doc on Monday, I told him to go to casualty if he needed to and not to turn up at work tomorrow ( I will be the manager on duty). So, that was it, what a day. The main thing is Mike seems ok and will now get checked out. Oh and I am quite pleased with the PR. We have a great team but I think Mike will need to start taking it a bit easy, people told us he was flying passed them, he told me he just gave too much. Thanks for reading this report. Roy Edited to correct PR................6:01 not 6:31 And about 300mts from the finish, I could hear someone approaching to overtake me, I don't normally do this but I hit it and left him with a 6:34 pace for the last bit, according to the garmin, Amen [This message has been edited by roy c (edited Jun-17-2007).] [This message has been edited by roy c (edited Jun-17-2007).]
