I treated this race as a tune up run and not necessarily as a race per se since I was asked by the RD to assist in pacing a group of elementary school kids on their first race. I was assigned two girls and I did look forward to being the big sister to them at their first race. Knowing this ahead of time, I decided to take an 8 mile run last night at around 7 or so. My legs were tired this morning, but a half hour pilates took care of that. I drove to the race with 3 other friends, who were very excited about this race. At the starting line I was informed that the kids assigned to me were not coming, so when the gun went off I just took off at a steady pace as to not let my HR to go too high since it was extremely hot, it was 78 when we started the race, which is very hot for us here. My goal was to run the whole three miles at an exact pace, which was easy to do for the first half part of the race, but it became a challenge on the second half due to the heat and the course. But I was pleasantly surprised that I did kept a steady pace the whole time, maybe there is hope for this yoyo runner to run at a steady pace. The route of this race was less than desirable, around the highschool campus (around the tennis court, the football field, the soccer field, down and up an unpaved road, three steep blocks and back to the school parking lot and that all over again. My finish time was 28:10. Which is almost a 2 minutes PR. This is not a great time, but considering that my legs were tired from the 8 miler last night and the heat I am very happy about it. ------------------ "Everyone in life is looking for a certain rush. That's what I was going to say about my marathon this morning but you going and getting a two minute PR kind of ruins that excuse, ... I mean strategy. While most of us have to so single-mindely focus on our own performance in races, you're always not only just thinking about others but actively helping and assisting them too. Uhm, . .. maybe I'll try that approach too (but I want you to be the one I "help"). No wonder you are so good in a medical interpreter job helping other people. Uhm, . . . maybe I'll try that approach too (but I want to be the one you help!).

A PR on a terrible course, where you are helping others, is a cause to celebrate. Go get it next 5K you are pointing to. Spareribs

Congratulations Nancy,A 2 minute PR is very impressive, especially considering the heat, the poor course, AND an 8 mile run the night before You'll do great on a flat course in cooler weather. Hope to see you soon. John

Great run, mariposai! You gotta feel good about runnin' a PR when you're tired ...a sign of good conditioning and mental toughness (so I'm told). PJ

mariposai,Amazing that you PR'd by two minutes after 8 miles the night before and Pilates the morning of the race. Great job! Dark Horse P.S. I put Tetsujin's Japanese into a translator program and it says, "I want to leap about with you under the bright sky night lights wearing pink thongs and beverage drinking limoncello." Keep a sharp eye on him. ------------------ I'm a dark horse, running on a dark race course

Congratulations Mariposai, a 2 minute PR when you weren't expecting to *race* and were only trying 'maintain an even pace' is very good. You will have many faster finish times for sure. You are very kind to volunteer for such wonderful work, and I agree such things can lighten a sad heart. You are a lucky girl to have Tetsujin offering to dance around you and bring you limoncello too.

mp Well done on on your 2 minute PR. That's a lot for a 5K especially as your plan was just to cruise it after 8 miles last night. I see faster 5K times on the the horizon!

It feels so good having big brother DH watching out for me. The translator I used must be wrong since it mentioned something like Japanese dinner in a place overlooking a lake or water
