Millbot Well done on a great race and PR. I wish I could find a race with lots of downhills in them. Nice one Roy

I'm looking forward to doing a bit of running out there, so guess I should be prepared for heat, hey? eta: are there any short races the weekends of the 15th or 22nd?
Elaine, this Spring has been hot, but it is still getting down to the 50s or 60s overnight, so running early in the morning is not bad. Here are some upcoming races: http://saltlakerunningco.com/events.cfm

The forecast called for a high of 90 F, so it was going to get warm soon. Fortunately the canyon is fairly narrow so a lot of the course is shaded. I was struggling with the heat (probably 75 F) and the effects of my aggressive pace. I felt okay about this, because in some races I have finished feeling like I could have given more. Not this time.
Unofficial time: 1:15:25. Official results aren't up yet.
Oh Millbot! You exceeded my expectations by, not only giving the weather report upfront, but updating it during the race!
Excellent! I liked reading about this run, I felt like I had a birdseye view. Congratulations on a fine new personal best.

You described this race very well, and congrats on the PR. I think you used good judgment too, knowing how to handle the hills. It is a mental thing sometimes. I am trying to learn to be a faster downhill runner and really benefited from hill workouts that focused on downhill as well as uphill work. You sure did a great job. Spareribs

Congratulations on the hugh PR! Sounds like a lovely locale for a race, too, although I’d have loved to see the “floating” runners. Great race and report!I’m afraid all I know about Salt Lake City, Utah is that the worst plane flight I ever took was the one from Cincinnati to Salt Lake City last summer. We were just stopping to change flights and go on to Cody, Wyoming, but we hit some turbulence outside of Salt Lake City that was unbelievable (apparently a bad combination of a storm and the mountains around the city). Even as we landed the wings tipped back and forth so strongly that I was sure one was going to hit the ground and flip us. Scared the carp out of us. My poor son, age 9 then, was tight-lipped and white-faced, and although he said he was fine, the next flight and the 2 flights back home later, he kept his window shade down and refused to look outside.

Nice going, Millbot! Congratulations on a great race and for hitting your stretch goal. A strong, smooth, floating runner came up beside me and we ran together for a bit. I thought, This is how those other guys on B&B must look when they run. In my mind, this is how you look when you run. Nice job.

After my recent fizzle at 75 degrees, I'd be interested in any hydration/nutrition or other countermeasures you might have employed for avoiding the standard forumula of being 30 seconds a mile slower for every five degrees above 60, especially if you have any cooler comparative ten milers or upcoming ones. Maybe the formula doesn't apply to runners used to running in heat.

Tetsujin, I haven't raced enough to quantify the effects for myself, but my training experience in different temperatures has been that I start feeling the effects of the heat at about 70 F, and I have to slow down dramatically at 80 F and above. I ran in 100 F once and felt awful. For me, water and electrolytes are the key to running in the heat. I follow Bob Glover's advice on hydration and nutrition before and during races. I have had good results with e-Gel on long runs in the warmer months. I have not tried any of the electrolyte tabs but I have heard good reviews.
