The 5 for the Kids 5K Run/Walk was for the benefit of Care House, our community's advocacy center for child victims of abuse and neglect. The attorney I work for does lots of juvenile work as a Guardian ad Litem, so I deal with these very sad cases regularly. This was only my 3rd 5K. My concerns – the race was at 7:00 p.m. An evening race is a first for me. I’m an early riser, and usually go to bed about 9pm, so 7pm is a low-energy time of night for me. Plus, it was about 88 degrees – much hotter than 6am, when I usually run. In 9 years of running, I’m not sure if I have EVER run in temps this hot (I am SUCH a wuss). Goal – to beat last November’s 5K time (PR) of 25:40 (8:16 pace). Based on my recent HM, the McMillan calculator said I should be able to keep a 5K pace of 7:39. I had serious doubts about this (even if it had been cool weather), but that’s what I aimed for. . Bonus – along with the t-shirt, registration also got me 2 free beers afterward. Fashion Report: Black marathon girl running skirt, black and blue Nike tankini, no FUGs (okay, they were built in, you know?). Yes, I wore black and blue, and my shoes, Saucony Trigons, were not black and therefore did not match my skirt. Oh well. Course began and ended at Brixx Ice Company beside the Dayton Dragons stadium (minor league baseball) and wound along the Great Miami River, crossing over it and back on 2 overpasses. I got there early enough to warm up with a 30-minute jog with some strides, since it usually seems to take me that long to warm up (thanks Ribs for your suggestion on that). Did I say it was HOT. My mouth was so dry during my warm-up that I drank 2 cups of water before the race. For the first time in a race, I lined up near the front, and when the race started I actually kept the lead runners in sight for a long time (before they left me in the dust). I felt great the first mile, but by the second mile I had bad cramping in my upper abdomen (maybe from drinking that water?), right under my HR monitor strap, which also felt like it was strangling me. Why was I wearing that stupid thing in that heat anyway? Did I really need to know that my HR was holding steady at 181? I’d never seen my HR hold that high before. My face was so hot you could fry an egg on it, my mouth was dry as a bone, and I couldn’t get a breath for the last 2 miles. I was thinking, This is why I hate to race, this HURTS, this is MISERABLE, I PAID to be in this much pain, I AM NOT GOING TO STOP AND WALK!!! There was a hydration station about the half-way point. As I approached it, I said, “Just throw it on me!” A woman said, “Really?” and I said “yes” so the volunteers obligingly threw several cups of water on me as I ran through. Aaahhhh. Amazingly (considering I felt like I was practically dying) when the finish line came into sight, I did manage a very respectable kick. Splits: Mile 1: 7:24 Mile 2: 7:39 Mile 3: 7:58 Mile .10 .40 (6:24 pace) Results: 23:45 (Garmin said 23:42) 21/168 OA 1/5 AG (40-44) 4/85 females So it appears that the McMillan calculator was right on the money. Who’d a thought? ETA – I can’t tell you how exciting it was to feel like one of the fast people. I have always been a slow runner, and it amazes me that, at 42, I am faster than I’ve ever been. ------------------ Holly [This message has been edited by hollys4874 (edited Jun-02-2007).]

You're far from being a wuss. What's the word for a female stud? That's a very good time. Specially in high temp. Thanks for the RR------------------ Never regret anything that made you smile, SteveP My User Profile

The miles always tell the tale. You did the work. You get the reward. Very well done. Very well executed. Now you have a routine you can rely on too. When you hit a morning race you will trounce everyone. Spareribs

Holly,Very good job! Nice kick at the end--I didn't know you were that fast. The good news is, if you get a little faster, you can challenge Ribs to a 5K race. The bad news is, he won't respond. Fortunately, he looks good in yellow. Dark Horse ------------------ I'm a dark horse, running on a dark race course

WTG on the AG win and the PR. I think you have been working much harder on improving and it is showing. 42 is a spring chicken. Saw this after I mentioned you owed on in the Friday thread, oops

OK...Now I am praying no one calls you up to say the race was short...(JOKING......hopefully)That is AWESOME girl. Like several have said, your hard work definitely paid off. Now then, maybe you ARE an evening person and just never knew it?....(naaahh....but it was worth the try to suggest it). You might have knocked a 7/100ths of a second off the time if you had them throw water AFTER you went by. Doing it in your face would have caused you to flinch, costing you about 4/100ths of a second. Then to be hit from behind by water would have shocked you to quicken your pace the other 3/100ths of a second. Just remember that the next time. Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS on the PR...1st AG and also being in the elite section of finishers for this race that is not really a specialty for you. Thanks for the good and QUICK RR. ------------------ vista129

WTG Holly! We all knew you would PR, it was just a matter of by how much. Fantastic effort!I see you employed the go-out-fast-and-hang-on 5K race method. No 'wuss' would ever try that. There's much discussion whether that is the best way to run a 5K. I've done it twice: once it worked out well, the other was disastrous. Regardless, it makes the 5K a very painful race, and you will always question why you put yourself through so much pain. I'm glad to see you invoked the one acceptable deviation from the no water during a 5K rule...

Holly,I was just thinking about your 23:45, and intuitively it seemed to me you should be running a sub-4:00 marathon with that kind of 5K time. Indeed, I plugged your 5K time into McMillan's calculator, and it spits out 3:51:32 for your predicted marathon time. McMillan's calculator assumes you are equally well-trained for all distances. Based on your mileage, I believe you were reasonably well-trained for your marathon, though I recall you had some knee issues late in the game, which may have been a factor in slowing you down. However, your marathon time was well over 4:00, if I recall correctly, adjusting for your short course. This suggests you are actually better suited for the 5K. Either that, or you are rapidly improving, and therefore your PRs are still soft and not reliable. There's yet another plausible explanation for the discrepancy between your 5K and marathon times. George Sheehan called weight the single most important factor in distance running. I know talking to wimmen about weight is just about the last thing any sensible man would do, but no one's ever accused me of being sensible. So I'll just suggest, if you lost 5-10 pounds, you would be somewhat faster in the 5K and a lot faster in the marathon. Those few pounds may well explain why McMillan's calculator is "off" in comparing your 5K and marathon times. Dark Horse ------------------ I'm a dark horse, running on a dark race course
