30th running of the Marin Memorial Day RacesSUMMARY: Distance: 10K Time: 40:15 Pace: 6:28.6 Age Grade: 82.17 Division Place: 3rd 60-64 Still no sub-40, but this morning was closest I’ve come so far. Not only was it a PR, but it was also my best age-graded time for any distance since 1991. In recent months I’d started to lose hope that I would ever reach my goal of breaking 40 minutes. The best of my most recent attempts had been in 40:50’s and I’m not getting any younger. However, today’s race has given me renewed hope.
The race start and finish took place on the Marin College Campus, which is about 15 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. It was part of the USATF Grand Prix, Pacific Division. The weather was beautiful, with temps of 54 at start and 57 at finish, under sunny skies. I was slightly ahead of pace at 4 miles (25:39), but finished with a pair of 6:35’s while needing to average 6:27. Hopefully the extra miles I’ve been putting in these past couple months and applying the same strategy going forward will result in continued improvement. Thanks for reading along, and to all the CoolRunners who have continued to support and inspire me. My Profile

Did you give some back due to trying to maintain through hills in the first 4 or did you encounter hills during the last 6.2? Could be a telling statement. Regardless -- a stellar performance!!!

Hermosa, It's a certified, flat loop. It might gain 20 feet "altitude" during first 2 miles and drop that much over the last 4, but I'm not sure. I always wonder if I wasn't tough enough when I drop off pace during late stages of a race. I know one thing, though, I sure am beat now even though I finished more than 9 hours ago.ksrunr, I'll never quit trying even though the confidence comes and goes. That 4.75 miler you just ran tells me that you are clearly in sub-40 10k shape right now.

hey jim! nice race and so close to sub 40! that could have been a bear of a race, like the Dipsea. Glad to hear it was a flat loop. Good temps too. Your training and racing has paid off and your goal is within your grasp! glidegal

17 seconds, a heartbreaker, but given what you were thinking lately it is agreeably a renewed hope. That training, with the strong mileage and the careful application of speed, is doing you good. Very happy for you.Compare your AG results with what we have here in Dallas. You would have won going away. Nice going Jim, very happy for you. Spareribs

Jim,I have missed your reports. This is the first one I have seen in a while. Congrats on a great time and on closing in on your goal. I believe you will get it this year. I expect it's potentially a confidence vs physical issue to get under 40 for you.Do you train with others that can run under 40. It only has to be once a week but this group training has really helped me to realize that there is no reason I cannot run even faster. Training with others who can run those times, shows that you have the capability and the will. Once you know it's just a case of putting it all together in a race. It may take a couple of races, but you will do it. Keep it up Tall

Jim,Very nice job, and I think this race shows you how close you are. I know you like to train hard right up to the brink of a race, but I'd like to suggest you think about giving yourself more rest before a goal race. Just a thought. Great race Jim...16 seconds...sooooo close. I'm sure that you will get there soon. Just keep on knocking at the door and it will open eventually! You just gotta know it's right around the corner after this race, I know that freaking feeling of being so close you fan almost touch it. 40:15 is still a very respectable time indeed as you well know. ------------------ My User Profile "Keep on Running" Bob

Jim- Great job getting back on track! Excellent effort and a fine time. Your training is solid and I believe in my heart that you will get 39:xx in the fall if you stay consistent and uninjured throughout the summer. You are right that the race is most difficult in the final third. That's where you need confidence that your training is solid and must push through the pain and believe that you can still hold on to that pace that continues to get more difficult. This time must be a big boost for you. I'm sure you will have renewed vigor for that sub40 attempt later in the year. Congratulations! (I wanna be like you...when I grow up...--check that...if I grow up )

Jim,Very nice time! We are all quite impressed. 16 seconds is a lot, but we are talking about less than 3 secs/ mile now, so you are really getting close. We are all pulling for you. Huskydon

You are amazing.I sure hope you are able to trim those 3 seconds/mile that HuskeyDon suggests. I am looking forward to reading about that 10K. In the meantime, stay healthy and thanks for inspiring us.
