Finishing a marathon upright is a major accomplishment. Getting to spend quality time with your boomer friends makes it even better! Congratulations on finishing your FIRST marathon!

Howard, You are the man! First marathon--woohoo!!It's a doozy of a distance, isn't it? You are going to PR the next time you race a marathon by 20-30 minutes! I have no doubt about it. Your medium distance runs tell me that you will be able to do this once you get more mileage and more LR's in. You have excellent strength and leg speed. VCM broke me on my first attempt, but I BQ'd with number 2 at Hartford...maybe you'll follow my footsteps?? I'd consider a Pfitz stragegy/plan for you. MedLR and LR's are the greatest need, after the overall mileage. For now, though, rest, recover and relax. Enjoy the sweet victory over the dreaded marathon beast. Congratulations again.

Congratulations marathoner caddis. I've been looking forward to your report. As someone who's done one marathon, I am especially interested in other people's first one and how it compared to mine. You did well and had a great experience with your family and other boomers. Way to go.TomS ------------------ My Profile

Well done cfli!!!!! You may have missed your time goal but got the experience, and what a great way to spend it with family and friends. For a first marathon with only 17 months or so running, you did well. I'd suspect that on you next marathon you'll see a significant drop in time.Build on this performance with little tweaks to the training plan. Mike

Congratulations to caddis the marathoner. I have been looking forward to your report. Since I've only done one marathon, I am especially interested in the first time experiences of others and how they compare with mine. You did well and had the great support and company of your family and other boomers. Way to go.TomS ------------------ My Profile

See Fly!It was so much fun meeting the Mrs. and the two little cherubs! You have a fun and a beautiful family. I'm sorry your race didn't go exactly as planned but, what a great time for a first marathon! Excellent! How did the one who rhymes with parade, do in the parade? (After dinner, the r.s. said the same thing about you as you said about him!)

Good job with your first marathon. I am sure that the next one will be much faster. Beware -It can get addictive. How about Rhode Island in the Fall?It was nice meeting your family. Hope to see you at the next race. Ralph

Two things about this report are noteworthy. First was the straightforward account of the race. For the first marathon, just finishing it for most people is all you are trying to do. It's a big learning experience. You always do better in subsequent marathons because of what you learn, and because to run the marathon well you pretty much have to run a few of them. You reported it just like it is.The second is your focus in the report on the wonderful people you spent time with. I have not met the beers personally, but of course know your impressions are correct. They are an inspiration. When I first met Rose in Omaha, she brought a gift for my son Riblet; she is so generous of heart, and Ralph is the nicest guy on earth. I have met Skip, know that he had a great race, and that he too is a good guy. You were fortunate to be with such a great group and it was kind of you to devote the bulk of your report to time with your friends, rather than details of your race. Shows your own kindheartedness. Great report Howard. Spareribs

I didn't realize you had not been running all that long. Congratulations on completing your first marathon and even though you had some aches and pains towards the end, you still persevered and finished in a very good time! And meeting up with fellow boomers and putting some "reality" with our virtual friends is always a highlight of race weekends for me and sounds like it was for you as well. Nice Job Caddi!!------------------ Tamster

C-fly, Marathoner. Sounds pretty cool, I'd say.And what Spareribs said ... can't improve on that. You have a kind heart and a beautiful family. What exactly is "a taste" of beer pre-marathon? Experience tells me that a pint is perfect pre-race carb-loading. I'm not kidding. I like PDR's post-marathon advice too. She's a smart one. Enjoy your R&R!
