Steve, congratulations! I think I said this before, but I remember you posting you'd signed up, & how exciting it was. And you did it! Ran a marathon. Under goal time. Too bad you didn't get your sustenance at the 1/2, but you made it anyway... I'm so happy for you. Well done.uh, DH, no one is the boss of him. Congratulations on your first marathon! Oh boy, I knew you were gonna get some flack as soon as I read the asparagus part. I think it's great you enjoyed yourself and don't let those meanies Spareribs and DarkHorse hassle you about the asparagus picking. You paid the entry fee so you get to do whatever you want along the way. But to be safe you'd better not plan to do a fall marathon when the pumpkins are ready...

Oh, I am enjoying this report and the replies; what fun! Spankowski, ya done good. You were much too subtle, though. "Oh by the way, this is my first marathon", indeed! Now, please, hurry up and get that Batman t-shirt Herbert the Pervert race photo posted!

4:25:59 huh? Pretty darn good for a first marathon. Just think, if it weren't for the asparagras-picking incident, you might have made 4:25:39. Just be glad she doesn't like poison ivy.... cj

Flowering wild asparagus? swoon! Oh spankowski, you do know the way to a gal's heart. I am so impressed by your first marathon, you did so well! Even without your batman goo at the halfway mark too. Your family sounds as delightful as you; making cheer signs encouraging your inner Herbert the Pervert. Congratulations, marathoner!

What an accomplishment, Steve!Good on ya. Your report brought back so many memories. You ran past my high-school era home twice, you know... and that track: I've puked on it, worn out Topsiders marching on its infield with a Sousaphone on my shoulder, and had my very first smooch in the bleachers. On East Shore Road, somewhere north of Timber Lane, there used to be a little red house with bench beside the road, labelled "For Pooped Joggers and Cyclists." Next to the bench was a little tin cup and a spring or a hose: I can't remember which. Is it still there? (There was another fine place for smooching on the beach side of the road right around there, too) <MustangSally gets all misty> Well done on a great first marathon in your home town: but lay off the asparagus, eh? ------------------ Mustang Sally Boomers and Beyond wiki

Aww man, Herbert the Pervert comes thru, on all levels! A sub-goal time on his first marathon and sweaty asparagus for the little lady. A true hero. You done the Batman garb well, m'man! Good job, and congratulations on a fine effort. (and I've been known to pick blueberries on fall races...shhhh)------------------ evanflein

It's still there and was tempting me with it's bench like wiles. All the Boomers were in my thoughts and prayers while racing. Especially the Michigan Boomers. I ran accross the road on the way back when I picked the asparagus. As I told one runner, I knew I asn't in the money, I wasn't going to place in my AG. I'm married, so I don't have to impress the babes. The kids weren't there, so I could lie about how well/poorly I did. I havn't given birth, so I don't have to get my figure back. It's taken much more time for any of us to write about it, than it was to pick the darn weeds. My wife helped me get ready for my first 12 mile race back before we even started dating. Hopefully she feels appreciated. ------------------ Never regret anything that made you smile, SteveP My User Profile

We will definetly see you again next year we have already booked our room for next year. Steve--after a long holiday weekend, I didn't have any problem picking your RR to read first. It was an excellent choice as always. Sorry you didn't let yourself look for shiny stones, but asparagus sounds like a good substitute. and how on earth did Derrick pick you out of such a huge crowd?

Great race, Steve! I've been watching your progress over the past few months and you have worked hard to get to the start line. I know you feel good about what you've achieved as you should. As St. Paul said "you've run the good race", although he didn't mention anything about asparagus! I'm wondering also about this secret handshake? Enjoy your reverse taper! PJ

Congratulations, Steve. Sounds like a good, fun first marathon. I can take the Batman stuff, even the "Pervert" stuff--though I don't know the reference (and don't want to)-- but asparagus? Yuck. Strawberries, yes. Hell, even peas or carrots. But asparagus? Why, why, why?

I gotta run this marathon. Not only do I love the Traverse City area, but I love Asparagus! I'd probably run about a 6-hour marathon I'd be so bogged down with Asparagus in my fuel belt. (What else is a fuel belt for but fuel?)You only get one "first" marathon. For you to enjoy it is definitely the right idea. And you did that! Bill ------------------ Bill's Profile

Congratulations on a running such a "fun" race Herbert or is it Spanky, oh heck I don't know but who really cares. It sounds like you had a great time and I am sure you will be running another very soon. And besides Ribs and Dark Horse have totally missed the point...this wasn't just any old asparagus this was "sweaty asparagus" now how romantic is that! Great job and and even greater attitude! ------------------ My User Profile "Keep on Running" Bob

WTG on your first marathon Steve! I agree with the for's on the Asparagus. Your wife is one lucky lady. Don't listen to SR, he not only wouldn't pick asparagus for his wife, he makes her mow the lawn too

YAY Steve!!! Congrats on your first, may you never forget it and they DO get easier, well not really but I thought that might inspire you to enter another one. BTW that is a great time for your first, considering the added weight of the asparagus. I am still laughing about Herbert the Pervert likes Sherbet....thanks for the funny RR.arf
